I remember that episode and you left BU as a result. I tried to send a supportive e-mail, but I think you must have closed the account so I doubt you ever received it. It had a 68 in it (oof, right next to 69). Anyway, you're back and no harm done :)

Recently, you referred to the outing and you said it was "against (your) will", which implied you might have had some say in the matter. Is that what you meant, or was it untypically imprecise use of language on your part? Just curious.....

I didn't leave, I just stayed off the site for a while.

It was against my will in the sense that (obviously) the person doing it knew I would not have wanted him to do it. That's why he was anonymous.

I started on the old 606 boards years ago and also popped on to BU. The 606 boards had regional derivatives and the old Radio Sheffield board was pretty good with input from fans of teams from across the region. When that closed down, a poster called Grayblade (ex BU) set up a local board and that was excellent, if a little slow sometimes. That had to close for some reason, forget why. I'm sure there'll be one or two on here who were also on that board. Used to have some good banter with one or two decent Owls - SARS In Their Eyes and Mark Of The Owl spring to mind from 606 and the RS board.

Registered on BM ages ago and used to post but got sick of it and while I read it, haven't posted for years. Not the most intellectually challenging board:rolleyes:

Darren was outed on BU 2008ish precisely because of the anonymous alias capability. Someone used said alias to tell everyone he had done some detective work with my email I had been daft enough to post on the public forum.

I strongly suspect that person is on here, but he has never had the guts to fess up.

I have a pretty good idea who it was.

Not me, by the way.

I've only just discovered this thread. I was Crouch End Blade on SUISA and VP. That's where I lived at the time. I was nearly Mayfair Blade because that's where I worked.

I first posted after the QPR away game on 30 November 1999 and I subsequently met an awfully large number of people from SUISA, many of whom I still see from time to time during my now very rare appearances at games.

That QPR away game became famous as the game where The North London Blade (NLB) was arrested after drunkenly trying to get in to the game at just about every turnstile. The police locked him up and released him 5 minutes after the tubes stopped running. I spent the next eight years travelling to most of the away games in the south of England and some Sheffield games with the same gang of mostly male, mostly single, London based Blades. Many of us are married with kids now and very few of the "originals" live in London any more. As I have mentioned I now live in Oxford with Mrs Crouchy (who came to that QPR game with me) and two children.

QPR was always a good day out and in fact my "stag do" was me and a mate (a Forest fan who also came to that 1999 QPR game) going to see us against QPR on 23 February 2008. It was a shocking game memorable only for the mad woman behind me going on and on about "feyting with yer fists, not guns and knives" and also someone nearby dropping the most disgusting, noxious fart I have ever encountered in my life.

I have known many of the posters on this forum for over 15 years and briefly met many others.

I used to have occasional email conversations with Step Firth and he was mostly OK. I have never been banned - I once used the word "cunt" in a posting and after about five minutes I saw that Step had just edited it to something else and sent me an email saying "Please don't do that again".

I was looking at VP the day the twats flew the planes into the World Trade Center. Someone (Copes?) posted that it had happened and Halibut Tatlock (where is he now?) replied with "Eeeeek!".

Golden days.

I think it was Tim that first posted about the WTC , but I can't remember his alias (NW3?).

I too made (and kept) lots of friends from the SUISA /BU days, it was great to get pissed with fellow Blades regularly, and occasionally we would enjoy the football too.

The spurs second leg was like an old school LBs night out. We were only missing someone getting barred from the harp and a fight in a curry house.

of course it wasn't me. I can't believe you even opened the spoiler FFS!

That was how I became aware of 9/11 ,scary moment which I will always remember. Other one I remember is Woodford Greens ? drunken 'I love United me you know' late one night.

Oooh Darren's gone all Bert in that post. It's not a clue is it?

new scoreboard needed

Remember the scoreboard well as it used to update Blades scores too. My first Wendy match was against Ipswich on 31st January 1970. My dad tapped on my shoulder telling me to look at the scoreboard which said "Hull City 1 Sheffield United 0, Wagstaffe" then "Hull City 2 Sheffield United 0, Wagstaffe", "Hull City 2 Sheffield United 1, Addison", "Hull City 2 Sheffield United 2, Addison" and finally "Hull City 2 Sheffield United 3, Colquhoun!". I was envious that Wendy had a more modern scoreboard than ours

I went to watch Wendy's home games against Burnley (we won 2-1 at Blackburn), Spurs (we lost 1-0 at Blackpool which killed our promotion chances) and Everton (Scoreboard was "Owls 0 Champions 1")

You do bear a grudge don't you? And it wasn't me, I hope that doesn't make me a suspect.

Not really. I'm just curious. If the person who did it does read this, he can PM me and fess up. We all do daft things and I will have a lot of respect for him if he has the guts to do that. I won;t tell anyone. Promise :-)

Darren's contribution to this Board was missed by many after he took time away. Not sure that he bears a grudge, but I sure can understand why he wants to identify the mean minded person who breached his privacy.
My philosophy is forgive and forget. This was years ago and whoever did it is unlikely to fess up, mean people don't do that!

It must have been someone who was at least semi "Web-savy." Did you make a list of everyone who was actively posting around the time of the outing? And the prime suspect is still posting on here?

It's like a Miss Marple mystery

Yes, its him.

Meddling kids eh...

Yes. It's amazing that a mere 45 years later the two electronic scoreboards at Bramall Lane can keep us flawlessly up to date with all the day's events without ever breaking down and showing Windows reboot messages.

listserve email list was my first online communication. My mate who had this thing called internet actually used to print it out for me as I didn't even have a telephone. There was Dougal and a guy from Norwich and I went under the name PragueBlade.

By 1998 I'd graduated to t'internet as BarcaBlade and found SUISA/BU/VP and also used to type text comms into IRC, wait for the bot to update stats and eat cheese late in games in an effort to secure a late goal. I met Copes and Asa and another Swede came to stay, I missed the Fulham Monty but still have the ticket to this day (where's Musical?).

Bath came over to BCN and I said I'd sort him a ticket for the Barca game, but he ended up buying me a ticket. I enjoyed the scatter-gun attack of Spaffmonkey (and later got incredibly messed up with him in the George & Dragon in BCN the day Seaman made that save).

I also watched 9/11 from the forum - it took a while for me to realize I could switch the telly on to find out more (although there was a curious moment when I half-freaked because the smoke had already arrived in the studio in Madrid and so would surely be in Barcelona in the next 5 or 10 minutes. Then I realized the cat had sat on the remote and altered the contrast. I was smoking a fair bit myself back then and saw Bert's waster banner frequently).

I got on well with Step and Windmill sponsored the Xmas Cup Subbuteo tournament we held in Cornwall in (August) 2008, Greenwich's book sits on my bookshelf and Hanging On To Harry's CD is on the music shelf. I even enjoyed Len and Curtis to a certain extent.

Back in Prague since 2003, met Copes again and Walthamstow and I shared a bottle of whisky and a late night listening to Marillion's 'Grendel' (sorry if I've ruined your cool there) after his hotel disappeared. We also gave Sheffield's own "The Bland" a spin on the turntable which should restore some cool.

And then I guess I've been a bit quieter and settled down with my partner who doesn't let me sit up all night and day reading chatrooms...

UTB

Ay up Barca. Still in Prague then?

I missed the Fulham Monty but still have the ticket to this day (where's Musical?).

Musical has emigrated to New Zealand and has taken NZ citizenship, the fucking traitor :-)

I would still be walking around Putney looking for the station if Blackheath Blade hadn't shown me the way after the Monty. I was absolutely trolleyed.
