Mr Kevin McCabe. You may or may not be 100% blade (I happen to think you are) but you have absolutely no comprehension any longer of what it takes to run a modern day football club. I know, some will scoff and say "But he has poured millions of his own money in" and doesn't that just reinforce the stupidity of it all?
Lets look at the evidence since we got into the Premiership in 06.
Some (arguable this one) would have sacked Warnock when we got there. History only has dictated this would have been the right thing to do but in all honesty I feel this is contentious. However, following the firing of Warnock is where the madness started. It continues to this day.
Replacing Warnock with Robson. What the fuck were you thinking?
Totally changing the clubs business plan of frugal investment to spunking every penny up the wall, including future monies coming in from West Ham. With an idiot like Robson in charge you let him blow the club apart. If you had been tight on the purse strings like you are these days Robson would have come and gone and we would have been liquid.
Replacing Robson with cheap option Blackwell. Worked at first because Blackwell had a good squad. We looked fair in his second season in charge following a good recovery when he started. But then you changed your mind again and we replaced James Beattie with Shitbastard Beattie and a whole list of other players who could have got us over the line left in a fire sale. James Beatties goals kept Stoke up that season so just imagine the difference he may have made to our end of season?
Of course Blackwell was sliding downhill but you kept him at the end of a season that most of us classed as failure. Players were getting of lesser and lesser value and those sold being replaced by carthorses and loanees.
So comes game 3 of the next season having given Blackwell the funds you go and sack him. A quality decision that you couldn't have made up. The club is cash strapped you let a man you have little faith in spend it and then sack him. Replaced with an option that in all honesty wasn't any better. We lost him in months to the national team but I can't blame McCabe wholeheartedly for that. But the Speed appointment was never about getting a quality manager in it was cheap and he was one of our own. This is an alarming pattern that now follows.
Brings in Metal Micky. The minute he said he needed someone to answer the phones for him you had to start shitting yourself. We brought this bloke in, and probably paid compensation for him. Of course he was a disaster, but the rot was already there. Haemoraging money from every orifice and awful quality players led to our demise.
Micky goes and we get a chink of light with Danny Wilson. Not universally popular and I cannot for the life of me understand what you were thinking, but last season we played some bloody good stuff and Wilson looked destined for getting us up. However, we never made any positive investment in January knowing full well at that point that our soaraway best player/striker could well be in clink by the end of the season. But hey, that was never going to happen was it. Ahh.
So we come to this season. We were all about youth and this was going to be our time. Most of the big earners gone or locked up, we managed to offload our best midfielder in Quinn for tuppence hapeney to Hull (look at him and them now) and in a stroke hamstrung ourselves. But not to worry because we had this new kid scoring goals for fun and while we weren't as good we were still able to score the goals at the right time to nick games. Kitson comes in and you think all is rosy.
Then January comes around and we take leave of our senses, selling the best young striker at the club and replacing him with a loanee (hang on I hear you say, we have been here before). So the business plan has changed again hasn't it? Then we start to stutter and splutter having looked previously like we were going to be ok. Having been top of the league at the turn of the year (ish) we started losing to Hartlepool at home, Yeovil at home and we weren't scoring the goals. So, we get to the business end and Kevin McCabe shits his pants following one particular bad performance and we sack our manager (again). I know, been here before but we wouldn't make the same mistake again would we? No, with a few games to go we get totally untried and unknown rabbit into the headlights Chris Morgan. And he will bring PASSION, PASSION and shout at people if it doesn't go to plan. But you have the same squad the previous experienced manager had so what will you do differently? Probably shout at them. It works for one game. People hail the wonder manager and then we find out in the next game, against 9 men that perhaps he isn't quite the great hope. Then we find out today at Portsmouth that he quite clearly isn't any better than the bloke before him.
Promotion automatically was still a possibility when we sacked Wilson. Now call me whatever you like but this is looking more and more like one of McCabes hissy fits where the knees jerk and he hasn't actually got a scooby what to do when Wilson takes his cheque and leaves. So he brings in one of our own. No one is going to be nasty to Morgs now are they?
The point to all this? We are fucked. If we do skank the play off then we have a possible light at the end of the tunnel but believe me when I say, if we don't then we are well and truly fucked. McCabe tightens the belt even further and prepare for more Fortes and fewer Blackmans, Quinns etc.
I don't blame Robson, Blackwell, Speed, Adams, Wilson or poor old Morgs, I don't even blame Warnock for any more than our relegation from the Premiership. I blame Kevin McCabe, making piss poor decisions hand over fist. For fucks sake Kevin, lock yourself away from the club and let someone else make the next appointment. Anyone, the cleaner will do.
I had to get that off my chest because I honestly fear for the future of our great club.
