There is an interesting photo in SUFC Images through the years page on Facebook of BDTBL that was probably taken either in the late 1950s or early 1960s. When I started following football in 1970 BDTBL had 5 floodlight pylons (4 tall which was at the outside of the stadium and one medium which was behind the middle of JSS). In the facebook photo there was two “extra” small pylons inside the stadium near the BL/JSS and Kop/JSS corners which I had not known about. Looking at the squad photos in the First 100 years book by Denis Clareborough I saw at the background of the 1961-62 squad photo that there was a floodlight pylon inside the Kop/JSS corner. Do any of you remember the small floodlight pylons and when were they erected and removed?

This is the picture you are referring to I think.
That is so strange but I don't recall seeing that ever.

I've never seen that photo either, but I think the smaller pylons were the original ones which were replaced by the taller pylons. The photo must have been taken just after the new floodlights had been installed and before the old ones were removed.

I love these pictures - I must have spent hours looking at this when I first spotted it. There's so much I've only heard about from Dads, Uncles and blokes in the pub. The terracing painted white for the cricket is something I'd never even thought of. I've hardly seen any pictures of the old Bramall Lane stand - particularly not from that angle. And what's the building that looks like a brewery behind St Mary's church?

I fear work may have to take a back seat this afternoon as I stare at it some more :)

Now I look at this one again, what is that open space on Denby Street?
Just above where the Sportsman Pub is (was?)

Somebody asked that question fairly recently. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the answer was, if it was answered at all :-)

I remember the old gym at the corner of Cherry St/Bramall Lame, which I think was originally indoor cricket nets. I always thought of that as a really old building in the late sixties, but in 1933, it hadn't even been built!

I will always remember sitting outside work at breaktime and seeing two mothers arguing over their offspring, fuckin hilarious when they were wrestling on the floor in the middle of the road cheered on by lads from Halls PMSL

cheers for the pictures lads....and yes, that's my old school when I was a nipper.... Denby Street :)

The only thing I can think of is that the 3 larger floodlights were new and not yet being used, this photo being taken in the transition phase between the old (the small ones) and the new. I must admit, I've never seen that photo before. Interesting. I'll ask my Dad.

I remember the 5 floodlight pylons fondly. Sadly there are fewer and fewer clubs these days with them, but I always like to visit the lower league grounds where they still have them. Floodlight pylons = ace!

Richdales was the brewery. Their slogan was Richdales Rich Ales.
