Fleetwood and Iain Hume

Just looking through the details of Sundays game and didn't realise Hume was now playing for Fleetwood. Got me thinking of the Morgan / Hume incident, I appreciate it was probably a defining moment the careers of both players, Morgan probably put his style of play into check a little bit and maybe I'm correct in saying Hume May or may not have realised his potential, I don't know how promising his career would have been without a fractured skull.

Anyway there was a lot of talk at the time of lawsuits, a long ban from football for Morgan and even talk of a potential prison sentence. Talk died down over time despite Hume mentioning his solicitors and those do the club looking the next course of action before the matter was next really mentioned again.

My thoughts at the time was the incident was unfortunate, Hume was of a slight build and a few inches shorter than Morgan, Morgan played the game at 100% but I honestly don't think has was doing more than swatting Hume to one side.

As no action was ever taken can we presume it was a situation where there was no case to answer or did Hume have time to evaluate the situation and accept the incident was nothing more than an accident? I'm sure the two have played against each other since but it'll be interesting to see if there is a handshake prior to our matches v Fleetwood?

Well given that Morgan isn't on the pitch anymore, that's not really that surprising.

Well maybe not but that doesn't usually stop the press dragging up a story! I'm pretty sure they've played against each other as well.

CarlingBlade yes thankfully common sense prevailed and it was realised by most that the incident was an unfortunate one.

Sadly there were a few at the time that just wanted to make more of the incident than was necessary.

I honestly couldn't care less if there was or is a media handshake, i find those things embarrasing. Terry and Ferdinand spring to mind.

I'm guessing that Hume has found his level and reached the pinnacle in the League two play off final. Perhaps he'll end up back there (L2) next season

As I recall, the incident just died down, no official statements were released by either club or player and that was the end of the matter.

I seem to remember a lot of people having a lot to say at the time, even some of our own fans felt inclined to have a pop.

I've seen a few retweets by Unitedites from Hume and he seems to trivialise the whole event now, which shows how good his character is because he has struggled to hold down a club since his layoff.

For what it's worth, I always maintain that although Morgan was clumsy, I don't believe it was the desired outcome. Morgs arms are dangerously high and swinging but Hume wasn't in Morgans line of sight. I'd also be surprised if Chris Morgan was the type of fella not to check in after and apologise etc. (take note Gareth Ainsworth)...

I believe he was booked for the incident in question, which was pretty much the only reason he didn't get a huge ban. Morgan's an idol and was a very good defender, but although I don't think he meant to fracture someone's skull, I think it was deliberate. Given Morgs isn't playing any more, there's no chance they'll flatten each other so there's no story really.

Well, that and we're in League One so no one cares.

I think it was the crafty little look that counted against Morgan. The way he just peeks as to where Hume is coming in then thrusts an elbow in that direction. And as I remember it, it didnt look like an elbow to gain upper body momentum. He's just swinging a joing at a face.

I thought it was a red. And three games out, probably.

But some of the hoo-haa at the time was out of all proportion.

Not sure Morgan ever intended that to happen and when I watched it back I am not sure Morgan really knew where Hume was.

This kind of things happen a fair bit in football.

I was there and have to say I think it was deliberate and malicious from Morgan, a player I always respected. I believe the only reason it was not a red card was because Ehiogu had been sent off minutes beforehand.

Simon Davey never shut up about it ,more to cover his own inadequacies than anything else both with the incident and his job. Hence nobody has ever heard of him since.
