Flares

Flares are shit. We're a L1 club with fans thinking they're watching a Champs League game in the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium!

They are wank and don't belong at Gresty Road, Oakwell or any other L1 crowd.

We are a nation of balloon lovers for big games but come on, how good does this look?

Really cool. Almost as good as this:

they set flares off all the time in Austria.. however the capo's instruct everyone to behave.. not that they need to .. there are never 'any' incidents.. perhaps they have different flares.. perhaps it is because they are sensible and don't bloody throw them

Bit strange comparing a disaster which killed 56 innocent people to the organised use of flares by European Ultras.

I don't mind smoke bombs. If they're held in the air for the 30 seconds they last then they're harmless. Just don't understand why people would throw when they're lit, especially into our own fans.

If it's a big occasion i.e Spurs away, then I'm all for them as it adds to the atmosphere. Generally speaking though, I think our away support atmosphere wise has improved massively since being in League One anyway. Remember the days when most folk wanted to sit down?

If people are scared of being caught and receiving a ban then they should stick to not setting them off at all, rather than setting them off and throwing them. Like the two that have just been banned for three and five years for setting them off against Scunthorpe.

Scunthorpe. At home. On a Tuesday night. Mongs.

I'm pointing out that the introduction of burning material into a football stand is not a particularly good idea. Is that difficult to understand?

Thank Christ the flares used by European Ultras (translation: European Twats) are done in an organised way. Imagine if they were disorganised?

Someone unleashed a flare a couple of seats away from me at Rochdale. The smoke trail obviously could be seen pointing to where it had come from, the cock that threw it pissed off, as they do. Next thing I see the stewards pointing me out to the coppers!!! I thought I was going to get thrown out or something worse. After that we just got a steward stood by us the rest of the game.........Pollocks, that said it looked pretty cool though.

With regards to the fan statement, I was two rows behind the bloke who got hit, it missed my 10 and 11 year olds heads by about 18 inches who were immediately behind him. Thanks for that.

On saturday, I'm sure Howard appreciated rubbing his eyes after the first one landed.

What's with these things, couldn't help but notice at Rochdale in the second half we're 2-0 up well in control and some idiot throws one on the pitch, interupting the game for a minute, the last thing United wanted when they were well on top.

Anyone defending these morons, why don't you f*** off abroad if you're so mad for it.

I don't think anyone on here has said throwing flares is a good idea.

To be fair mate, just showing a picture of a wooden stand being burnt down doesn't completely justify hating flares.

Well, mate, I'm not using a picture to "justify hating flares" - I'm using a picture to show what happens when fire is treated casually.

You ever waved a cigarette lighter in the air at a gig?

Exactly. Let he who is without pyro...

To be fair mate, just showing a picture of a wooden stand being burnt down doesn't completely justify hating flares.

It wasn't even just the fact the stand was timber that caused the disaster. There was years and years worth of rubbish and debris beneath the stand which was ignited by the cigarette.

Seeing as the majority of stands now are solid concrete with no gaps in which litter can gather, the likelihood of this type of thing occurring again are slim.

My little girl is too young for the lane right now, I'll probably feel different when the time comes to take her but currently I love them.
Of course I hate morons with them, and it goes without saying that I don't want anyone to get hurt, but as far as the atmosphere- I've been to games where they've been greeted as well as a goal has

They are not even FLARES, a tiny red smoke bomb from a fancy dress store!

I cannot imagine that.

For the record, I love to see flares at football matches. They create colour, excitement and can enhance the atmosphere.

They can also, in the hands of idiots, become weapons of destruction, either by being thrown or by causing breathing problems for those around.

If flares or smoke bombs are to be used at the ground, then perhaps an area could be set aside for the use of them. This would ensure that those that wanted to use them could be the ones coughing and inhaling the smoke, the rest of us could just sit and enjoy the sight of the colours.
