Just to cheer everyone up here's some footage from 2 heavy defeats from the 70's which I haven't see before

First see us lose 5-0 to Arsenal in the cup at the Lane on 7/1/78, featuring some amazing defending from Eddie Colquhoun and tiger like tackling from an aging Woody. The first 20 minutes featured 4 goals (all for the Arse sadly) and a missed pen (for us).

Then see Man Utd thrash us 5-1 on 23/8/75 in their first game at Old Trafford after promotion. It does feature one stunning rarity though. A goal from Big Chris.

I'm trying to recall from memory here, but didn't we draw with Spurs at Chrimbo and then have "3 games to shape the season" against table toppers Bolton, Arse in the cup and Sunderland? All ended in 5 goal concessions and the season was, indeed, turd shaped.

I like the idea Dazzler, that in a 5-0 reverse, there was any doubt about who scored the first four!

Yep
7/1/78 H Arsenal L0-5
14/1/78 H Bolton L1-5 (Woodward)
21/1/78 A Sunderland L1-5 (Campbell).

Cec Coldwell was caretaker manager after Jimmy Sirrel had been sacked in September when we were next to bottom. Going into the Arsenal game our league record under Coldwell was P17 W9 D5 L3 pts 23 (or 32 under 2 for a win) and he had taken us to the fringe of the promotion battle. All looked set fair for him to get the job permanently until that run of 5 goal defeats. The Board thought better of it and appointed Happy Harry Haslam, with the results we all know...

I was trying to work out the team v Arsenal. I think it was:

Brown

Cutbush
Colquhoun
Flynn
Calvert

Woodward
Hamilton
Speight
Hamson

Stainrod
Edwards

I was sat with my dad in the Bramall Lane upper tier as an 11 year old at the Arsenal game. Funny how your mind plays tricks as i thought their first 4 goals were in our end !

I was on the Bramall Lane terrace for the Bolton game with my dad and a mate (it used to be free in there for the old Silver Disc shareholders) and spent most of the time trying to steer clear of the constant fighting that was taking place. But my strongest recollection was of the Bolton fans' concern whenever Woody got the ball - they knew that he could harm them and he did with a cracker.

Yes, I bet they were really annoyed that Woody's goal meant they won 5-1 rather than 5-0 :-)

Bolton won the league that season.

I thought the same thing at the time but the Bolton lads around us were bricking themselves whenever he got the ball. It was one of those classic "I told you so" moments when he finally scored, even though it made sod all difference - a bit like when we conceded the 2nd at Rochdale a couple of seasons back!!

The goal we got in the 5-1 defeat at Sunderland came in the last minute when we were already 5-0 down and was a very good one technically. If I remember rightly, Woody had the ball in our half near the half way line and was looking to do a through ball. The Sunderland defence came out en masse to play the offisde trap and Woody just walked through them until he was level with Campbell and passed to him. Campbell; then ran about 35 yards on his own, rounded the keeper and tapped in. The celebrations were somewhat muted. The goal is on the YTV goals video.

Sunderland regularly thrashed us back then. They won 6-2 at Roker the following season.

Thing I remember about the Arsenal game , was how good super mac really was , how many they took into the new south stand , them getting run off our kop , Bolton game took a mate for his first { and last } Blades match , didnt we thump Millwall 5-2 that season ? put me right Dazzler if I'm wrong , and we think were shit now , them's we're the days when we had a good team as well .

Not exactly. Woody walked through the Sunderland defence from the halfway line until just outside the box and fired a low shot that Sunderland keeper, Barry Siddall, blocked and Campbell was quick enough to tap in the loose ball

Yes, we did beat Millwall 5-2 in March 1978. I think we were losing 2-1 at one point. I wasnt at the match as I was at boarding school but I remember my dad explaining to me about Woody's penalty. The Millwall players protested for a long time at the ref's decision to award the penalty and my dad was looking at how calm and collected Woody was as he was waiting all that time for the penalty to be taken and he had his hands on both hips. When he finally took the penalty his shot was so powerful that no keeper on earth would have saved it

Thanks knew we beat them was'nt sure when ;) .

We drew against Spurs, was it the previous week and I think there were 31 000 odd in, therefore we thought all was set fair for a good game against Arsenal when a few more turned up but Arsenal had some VERY good players, notably Liam Brady and Malcolm MacDonald and well that was that. I was at these two matches AND the Bolton game and to refer back to another thread, I used to go to the Rovers one week and Bramall Lane the next.

The joke then was some baloney about the SUFC 'phone number being Sheffield 5o5151 and did it follow the game where Edwards scored a first-half hat-trick against Southampton when Coldwell took over? or was that the other time Coldwell did the job of caretaker (so well btw).

Btw two Donny boys in the Arsenal team, (was that the year they beat Man Utd 3-2 in a fantastic final finale as 'twere?) Massive cash prizes for naming your two fellow South Yorkshiremen.......

I seem to remember the penalty was given against their keepr when he pushed a united player when he had ball in his hands and was attempting to kick/throw the ball or something as equally innocuous hence the long protest.

One of them would be Graham Rix, was the other a young spunky Seaman ?

Thanks for the ManUtd game Daz. I thought we played Florist first game that year?? Lets try and pull the positives from that performance....

OK Our kit was superb, first year of Admiral as supplier that is the best away kit we've ever seen, let alone had. The black tracksuit was also pure class.

Surely that gives us something to build on?

and two esoteric points;

1. Lou Macari was from an Italo/Scots family right? is it coincidence then that the name is Italian with a Scottish Mac at the start of it or has it been tampered with? (the Welsh had a Rugby player called Cambriani at this period too btw)

2. Lyrical notes for our younger viewers. Lest you think the Stepford End was singing 'You'll never Walk Alone", let me disabuse you of such a positive notion, no they were singing "You'll Never Walk Again" at 'US', we had it tough in them days....

Ooh, hit the bar Metal!

Yes to Rix, but the Million Pounds is still mine...

special thanks for the Beavis and Butthead theme happy memories of pist Friday neet TV. Its when TV mystically gives you EXACTLY what you want. Think Top Gear 6 years ago, don't think Grand Designs EVER.

We had played two home games before the Man Utd game, drawing 1-1 with Derby and losing 1-3 to Arsenal. I assume Man Utd had 2 away games prior to playing us.

I have to say that when Bolton won 5-1 Peter Reid gave the best individual performance Ive ever seen other than the odd currie gem , He was a class apart that game and I believe Ill never see a better display over 90 minutes from an opponent .

Edwards only got 1 in Coldwell's first game in charge v Southampton on 1/10/77. Hamson and Woodward got the others.

Arsenal did get to the final that year but lost 1-0 to Ipswich. the 3-2 game was the following year.

Cheers Ghandi. I think it was the first time Woody returned to be the penalty taker since his last one in 1976. Chico Hamilton took the job in 1976/77 and for most of the 1977/78 season. Gary Hamson took a few too

Blimey Darren, that little lot has brought some painful memories back. With regards the game at Old Trafford, we looked a good bet for relegation even at that point after only a few league games. Totally different to the season before when we came within a whisker of european football. Great away kit though.

I've only ever walked out of two United games in my life. Last season at Portsmouth with half an hour left and The Blades v Arsenal in the FA Cup 1978, as shown in glorious detail above. I lasted while half time before I was walking back to The Barrel on London Road.

Nice one fella.

Nevertheless, he's still got a head like a monkey.

Yep saw them both. we took the lead in the 2-6 deafeat.

We take a break from our sheduled programming, for this quick comedy interlude.
