Don't want to over egg this but i was checking the Wikipedia this morning to find out if Tony Daley is still at Wolves. I was just curious, and he is.

Its been at that back of my mind that we've had a problem with fitness for a long time and thinking about it, this marks the point where that began:

Following his studies, he joined Sheffield United as a fitness and conditioning coach in June 2003 but later quit his post following a row with new manager Bryan Robson on 30 August 2007. He was not out of work for long as he joined former club Wolves in the same role the following month.

It struck me how Tony's help might have been particularly important in getting the best out of older players such as Stuart Mcall and that with Collins, Doyle and Higginbotham likely to be in the squad this is an area that we should be seeking to invest in.

I'd have thought that with Weir's career lasting so long its something he'll be interested in too.

He's a fitness coach not a magician...

Moyes ran his players ragged at Everton and they always finish the season strongly. I am guessing that David Weir will have some ideas on how he wants to get his players fit, considering what a professional he was, playing into his 40's

My Grandma was a Collindridge so I've a particularly close affinity to Colin. From what I've heard and read there were some other great characters in the family including Frank who was the the MP for Barnsley during the war.

My dad said Collindridge was probably the fastest player in the league during the 1940s

I was up working near scouseland last week and was having a bit of craic with an Evertonian. He told me that our players could get ready for a tough ride as Weir is VERY VERY demanding fitness wise.;)

I've said exactly the same myself quite a few times that our drop down the leagues coincided with the loss of Daley, although if hes been at wolves hes not done them much good. The lack of fitness was so apparent in the season we went down from the Champ.

Can we bring Derek French and his pink hat back too?
(I noticed a few weeks ago a physio down on Eccy Rd that said Derek French on it, anyone know if its the same one?

I find ir sad, that most of the S&C guys haven't a clue, what causes 90% of injuries.

The fitness of the squad dropped drastically following Daley's departure. It was clear to see.

He used to have them doing drills after the game and something else I noticed was that there used to be energy drinks all along the touchline when he was here too.

I also mentioned on here when Weir was first mentioned that fitness would be improved. There's no way he'll let them walk around the pitch. Having played into his 40's he knows how to keep in shape.

Obviously worked wonderfully at Wolves!

Matt Kilgallon worked wonderfully at Sunderland (should I roll my eyes?)

Aye, why not! :D

Just trying to point out that super fit aint the be-all and end-all. Personally I think Daley would've made sod all difference last season, same as he did at Wolves (for two seasons!). If the team is shite, all he can do is make them fitter shite! They just get relegated not breathing as hard!

He joined in 2003. Joined a really strong squad already and worked with the squad for 4years.

Wolves are falling faster than the speed of light. It's difficult to turn something around when you're in decline.

The way that football is going these days is fitness & skill. It's passing down the leagues too. League 1 is getting more technical than ever. The Championship is probably the fifth best league in the world now.

I think this is the reason that Weir wants to go down the route he has. Fitness, performance and the science with one assistant and the tactics, technical and coaching with another whilst he oversees everything.

My reply was just going back to the gist of this thread which seems to imply that if only we'd had Tony Daley in post we wouldn't be where we are now. Disagree strongly! Conditioning coach (or however they are tagged) has limited impact!

I wasn't trying to trying to imply that a lack of fitness alone got us into the position we are in. Its just one symptom of a decline that started in 2007.

However, if we are going to have to rely on older players, an effective fitness regime helps them, and probably helps our reputation in the marketplace.

It was noticeable though that when Daley left our injury list suddenly got massive, it could just be a coincidence though and the true reason was that Nobson signed lots of old crocked players
