Since I started watching United we have gained promotion to the Top Tier on 5 occasions and our record for each adventure after 18 games is listed below plus our finishing position:

!961/62 John Harris ( Stayed up 7 seasons)

After 18 games we had the equivalent of 24 points. We finished 6th with the equivalent of 57 points (adjusted for no. of games and 3 points for a win).

1971/72 John Harris ( stayed up 5 seasons)

After 18 games we had the equivalent of 33 points . We finished 10th with equiv. 57 points.

!990/91 Dave Bassett. ( stayed up 4 seasons)

After 18 games we had 8 points ( and we had won the 17th and 18th games!!) We finished 13th with 46 points.

2006/7 Neil Warnock. ( just the one season)

After 18 games we had 19 points. We finished 18th ( relegated) with 38 points.

2019/20 Chris Wilder.

After 18 games we have 28 points.

In my 63 years support this is my 18th season in the top flight with United.

We must not be a 'selling club' , no, we have to back Wilder to the hilt. The way he has built this club's income, transformed his own reputation as a manager and the club reputation as a good footballing team, means we can afford to attract quality players, something I have never seen in all those years.

Enjoy Blades.

So not a bad record as only one relegation in 5 - the trick is to be able to establish ourselves as a strong premier league side. As you say we were relegated in 1968 after selling our 2 brilliant strikers Mick Jones and Alan Birchenall in the same fucking season ! Incredible and United have always managed to pluck disaster form safety by selling our prize assets. Lets hope that is different now.

The first game I watched was on April 18th 1953 when we beat West Ham 3-1 to clinch the Division 2 title. We had three seasons then. I've seen 6 promotions to the top tier. John Harris's teams were good, but this is the best side I've seen in those 66 years, and like everyone else I'm living the moment. I've still got the West Ham programme.

Very minor point, but I think it was 10 points after 18 games under Bassett. Wins against Forest and Luton, plus draws with Derby, Man City, Chelsea and Everton.
