Favourite Goalies

While contemplating the other thread about legends, I started thinking about the goalies that I have seen grace Brammall Lane and came up with the following list after 5 minutes. Well it's raining and I had nowt better to do.

Ted Burgin, Alan Hodgkinson, Des Thompson, Bob Widdowson,Brian Arblaster, John Hope(less)Tom Mc Callister, Jim Brown, John Conroy, Richardson, Connaughton,Arnie Sidebottom, Andy Leaning, Simon Tracey, Alan Kelley, John Burridge, Paul Tomlinson, Hans Segers, Keith Waugh, Graham Benstead, Paddy Kenney, Mark Bun Ian Bennet and Steve Simmondson.

Who are the ones that I have missed since the late 50's and which ones are your favourites? What recollections do you have of them?

Who are the ones that I have missed since the late 50's and which ones are your favourites? What recollections do you have of them?

Phil jags ( against palace and Arsenal at least ) and TC (didn't he save a penalty).

I remember Jags deputising but was it Alan Woodward who saved the penalty against Everton in the cup?
Also good spot for the mis-spelling of our place of worship. I'll stand in the corner

I saw Mel Rees away at Everton put in one of the best keeping displays I have ever seen.

I'm sure Glenn Cockerill went in goal once. Not sure what game it was but thinking it may have been either at Luton or Fulham for midweek fixture sometime in the mid-eighties. Ring a bell with anyone?

My favourites when I was younger were Budgie and Segers. Crazy buggers pair of them. Story goes that we signed Budgie from Wolves and they had locked him in a room with his contract to sign. Apparently, he climbed out the window and drove to Bramall Lane to sign for us. I seem to remember him throwing his gloves into the crowd after his debut and doing a backflip in front of the Kop.

Best all round keeper for me was Alan Kelly. Wembley aginst the filth would've been a disaster if it weren't for him.

Fond memories of Tracey though because he coincided with my happiest Blade watching times.

I saw Mel Rees away at Everton put in one of the best keeping displays I have ever seen.

I still have the highlights of that match on VHS and you're right. One save he did was Banksesque.

alan kelly, definitely. i remember getting my first blades goalie top and wanting to get a keepers name on the back, but the only options were 'Kelly' and 'Tracey'. Living in southampton meant no-one at school wouldve heard of them, and abuse would have ensued :lol:

as for players playing in goal, can anyone name any keepers that played in a different position for us? i remember carl muggleton (i think it was him) came on as sub at reading in the days of 3 subs on the bench. he didnt touch the ball but ran around for a bit :lol:

That would almost be my list too. I'd swap Tracey for Kelly due to loyalty bonuses. Paddy would have been right up there but takes his place firmly at the foot now.

Wilko De Vogt!! What a keeper. remember him costing us 2 goals in one game from miskicking the ball out both times. Class act.

tom mc callister followed by steve conroy then kelly then tracey only because the first two were as i was a young blade and they came to chat with young blades at front of the kop during warm up before games often.

ned kelly,without a shadow of a doubt.how many times did that man save us.he was an awsome keeper,even to the point that my dad said he was a better keeper than hodgy.

They say that all goalkeepers are a bit mad. This is typified by something I once saw when John Burridge was playing.
The other team shot, it went miles wide. (This was when there was still fencing around the crowd.) Then the ball bounced back off the fencing, Budgie dived at full stretch and made a fantastic save!

The Yorkshire and England cricketer never played football for us. He was Man U's left back when we beat them 2-1 at Old Trafford on Easter Monday 1973 (Bobby Charlton's last home game for Man U). I think you were thinking of Neil Ramsbottom who played a few games for us in the 1979/80 season

Tom McAllister for me, but for that git Rodney Marsh he would've been one of the great keepers, even more surprising when you remember he's Scottish.

I'll forgive you getting the first name wrong

Conroy - Steady and also enjoyed a kick about one day in Endcliffe park with him
Waugh - Because I remember me and my mate circa 10 years old starting the 'Keefy Waugh' chant at the back of the kop as he took up his position between the sticks. (why don't we sing the players names before games anymore?)
Tracy - Bargain of the century; what he lacked in brains he made up for in some outstanding saves
Kelly - Reached his peak with the Blades
Rees - no explanation needed here (Englands No1........what,.......he's Welsh....FFS!) RIP
Kenny - Bargain of the next century, despite his less than well thought out comments and subsequent departure

Although not a legend or a favourite.We had a very promising young keeper called Keith Solomon,who tragically died during a training session at the old Ball Inn training ground in 1981.The Blades played a memorial game against his home town club Truro City.I and a few other Blades attended this game.Reports say he had the makings of a very good keeper.I think he made 1 appearance for us but cant think who it was against.

You may be correct there. The one that I was thinking of came on an emergency loan from Huddersfield (I think) and played against Wednesday the home match the same season as the Boxing day fiasco. The goalie that dreadful (Boxing)day, Richardson, was IMO the worst I have ever seen play for United. I believe that he cost us the game that we outplayed Wednesday.

Good call. You certainly filled some of the gaps in my list and memory.

I'm disappointed that nobody has mentioned John Pemberton v Liverpool as cover when Tracey was injured (I thought he did OK actually), or Roger Nilsen on possibly more than one occasion, but the one which sticks in my mind was a home match v Norwich, when we somehow lost 3-2, in a match where we all thought we'd taken acid, it was that odd.

Norwich's winner was a perfectly placed OG by David Holdsworth. Our old Roger used to be a 'keeper in Norway, apparently.
