I am 100% of the view I want Wilder to stay on even after our increasingly likely relegation to the championship...

However

I always keep an eye on Sunderland for family reasons. I noticed they went through a time of sacking managers who were struggling just before Christmas or just before the end of the season when all hope looked lost and every year it was successful for about 6 seasons.

Bruce (Kept up 10/11 sacked 11/12)
ONeill (kept up up 11/12 sacked 12/13)
Di Canio (kept up 12/13 sacked 13/14)
Poyet (kept up 13/14 sacked 14/15)
Advocaat (kept up 14/15 sacked 15/16)
Alladyce (kept up 15/16 and left for England job)

Maybe not allowing a manager to have “2nd season syndrome” worked for them... all the managers they sacked had a demotivated sinking ship feeling in the squad and as soon as it was obvious from then outside Sunderland were ruthless and it worked for 6 seasons!

it’s a risky tactic but boy it was effective.

Interesting stats mate. The flip side is where Sunderland are now.
It’s what Watford did as well but I don’t like it. However something has to change

Hello, Stegosaurus here

Why are people so.opposed to Fat Sam? He has a track record of grinding out results with shit clubs and for turning things around.

I do think its too late now, but im surprised so many dismiss the Big S.

Getting excited about big Sam is like the pigs who got excited pulis

They are from a different era, we need to look forward not back

You hear this 'different era' or 'dinosaur' tag quite a lot about big Sam. Yet anyone in the game talks very differently about him. He's quite forward thinking and supposedly a very early adapter of technology and various pieces of tactical analysis. You don't have the success he's had by being big and shouting. It's this standard stereotyping thing that we all bemoan, if you're English and not fashionable you're automatically Mike Bassett.

Not that I want him in, as Wilder is 100% still the best man for the job.

Let’s be fair, the style of play and tactics we’ve deployed over the past several months has been absolute hoof ball dogshit.

Allardyce wouldn’t be any prettier to watch, but it certainly wouldn’t be any worse.

I suppose West Brom and Crystal Palace should never have appointed Roy Hodgson as from different era.

Give over, Allardyce would manage Al-Qaeda if the brown envelopes were stuffed tightly enough with cash.

And you think we'd stuff an envelope tightly enough with cash? He's way out of our league.

Honestly, if we gave him a £10 million bonus for keeping us up, would be well worth it if he did imho

I'm not an Allardyce fan at all, but you've raised an interesting point. I could possibly go for that as long as it was just a short term contract to keep us up, I have reservations about any long term involvement of his at the club.

If he was offered the deal now I wonder if he would back himself to bag the bonus or think we're too far gone and the bonus isn't achievable.

I imagine we could, however I think the issue may be more due to your original first point about thinking we're too good for him than being able to afford it. (I appreciate your point was meaning the fans but I feel that we and other clubs feel they are too good for him. How come he's not managed for nearly 3 years if he's so well thought of?)

We had one season in the Premierleague last time round and ended up “where Sunderland are now” I’d of rather had 6 seasons in the Prem before we went into meltdown.

However the financial implications of doing what they did can’t have helped matters long term. That being said after Warnock
in the same period Sunderland were sacking managers we sacked Robson, Blackwell, Adams, Wilson, Wear, Clough, Adkins (excuse me if I missed any other failed managers in there) and I think it’s fair to say we got steadily worse.

also

Unless I’m mistaken I don’t think Watford have been outside the top 2 divisions since the late 70’s and have spent 7 years in the Prem which is a couple more than us and for club of their size I would say that is pretty remarkable.

Just two years from 1996

Call me a Bladey Blade, but I genuinely think i’d rather a championship Blades with an identity and a way of playing, than a soulless premier league vessel of a club managed by different people year on year, with players who probably couldnt even point out our city on a map of the uk.

Give me Wilder and Sharp any day over that shit

And currently , our way of playing is stale, negative, defensive hoofball.

Our identity is currently what ? The form and style of play during 2020 would suggest we have a negative identity

I hear you.

Just want to pose this question. If you would rather a Championship Blades with an identity and a way of playing, what do you aspire to when you have that?

I don't think having our on identity and way of playing is exclusive to playing in the Championship

agreed, they are not exclusive, as last season suggests we can have both an identity and play in the epl. how i see it is that having an identity is part of utd being a successful club, if we have people who care at the club and we have a squad and owner who gives their all and makes the right decisions for the club, success and epl footy will come naturally.

We’ve always seemed to have a strong identity when we’ve had relative success. Bassett, Warnock and Wilder. So i see identity as a requirement for utd for being successful.

And currently , our way of playing is stale, negative, defensive hoofball.

i see our current identity as we are a club which is hurting from the loss of fans, we have a manager who is brilliant but is clearly not himself at the moment, and we have players who love the club and would run through brick walls for us, but confidence and morale is at an all time low, which is producing some dire football

I don’t know why I didn’t see that

Still decent for a club of that size, whilst I hope we stay with Wilder, they are looking good this season in the championship and their run in the premier league seemed to be on the back of a new foreign manager every 6 months.
