I'm taking my daughter (8 years old) to her first match on Saturday and we'll be sat in the Family Stand. How family friendly is it? I'm trying to decide how many new words she might learn that I have to warn her to never mention in front of her mother. Although coming up from London for the match I can just tell her that anything she hears is a foreign language anyway so not to worry 🤣

My daughter is 15 now so I have stopped worrying about it - but she started coming with me about age 11 (on the kop) - she loves all the swearing. When everyone chants w*****r at the ref or opposition her face lights up.

From my experience it's not much better than anywhere else in the ground for language. But in any case if your kids are anything like mine they will just laugh it off, and I have never heard them repeat a word of it. For reference they are aged 10 and 7 respectively and have both been going for 2-3 years.

It's a lot better than anywhere else in the ground. When my grandson aged six started going he LOVED the swearing and gesticulating at the away fans by the fans around us. She will learn a few. If it gets really bad, don't be afraid to point out to the offender that it's the family stand and to cool it.
He did go home and say to his mother. 'Mum what does this mean?' and promptly did the wanker sign. (I did say we sit near the away fans)

I just asked my daughter (8) how family friendly it was yesterday. The response: “I saw someone doing the wanker sign at the away end, but that was about it”. I’m not sure whether that will reassure you or not.

She's been desperate to go for years and have decided to finally go for it. I'd rather she starts with a home match rather than an away one. I'm more worried about the 6 hour round trip in the car!

She’ll enjoy it! For the match, get her some sweets or crisps, make sure she’s warm if the weather’s bad and try and make time to look in the club shop first.

Some of my best memories with my dad were the long car journeys to away games in the Bassett era. Great bonding time!

I was worried about a similar thing when we had buiders doing our extension. My 8 year old girl went out to 'help' them.
After the first day I asked her what she had been doing.
She said 'I've been helping dig a hole, with my own spade . 'Oh that's lovely, well done' I said.

Second day, I asked again.
'I've been moving a sand pile' she said. 'Wow, you are strong' I reply.

Third day I ask her what she'll be doing that day
She says ' I'll be doing bricklaying, so long as them cunts from Jewsons fuckin' turn up'

I'm pretty sure it was my first game at the lane when I heard someone say the C word for the first time (coconut 😉) I was 8 as well. I think the atmosphere and the game meant I wasn't particularly bothered by it. I was on the kop though and we're talking 23 years ago at this point so I'm sure she will be fine. V Man City I think we won 2-0 which is a sign of how much of a different time it was.

She’ll have 100% heard it all on the playground.

People do still swear in that stand, it’s all part and parcel of watching a football match.

I’m sure she’ll know she’s not meant to use those words though and I hope she enjoys the match.

I heard somebody say 'crap' at the footie yesterday so I wouldn't risk it anywhere in the ground.

True story this. I was on that stand for Charlton at home some years back (the season they won the league). My mate shouted, though not that loud, 'shut up shandy pants' toward the away end and was told off by the steward.

Absolute fuckin joke on that stand.

A young lad behind us joined in with the Kop's 'the referee's a wanker' last season, much to the amusement of us in front. He only got it out once though before his parents gave him a clip round 'ear oyle.

Don't take a flask in. The OXO police are in full swing on there.

It's such a crap stand, young en's definitely want to join in with the kop but it's seemingly discouraged. Older young fans should be encouraged to join in if they want.

(saying that, my only way of going now, as all my lot sit on there, so I'm not complaining about my only option to watch matches)

I wonder if the stewards this year will turn a blind eye on night matches for adults using kids season tickets?

There was always the time she mispronounced Jeremy Hunt's name when discussing politics with her younger sister (don't ask why my daughters talk politics!) and we just brushed it off whilst laughing inside!

I'm suprised, some mean 10 year olds didn't give the pair of you a wedgie for shouting that .........................

I took my kids from being around 6 years old on the family stand and never really heard anything too bad.

Good thing is there are plenty of other kids so there’s more of a chance of your daughter sitting behind someone small.

I've had to point out which words are the swear words to our youngest. Otherwise he just uses them when talking to people because they are a new word.

What's the craic with the family fun zone thing in the corner, underneath the stand? Can anyone go in or do you have to be in an invited group?

If you've not seen it, there's Playstations and stuff.

Just make sure she knows not to repeat “matchday language” in front of her mother and it’ll all be reyt

There isn't much swearing in my opinion, dependant on what's happening on the pitch. Having said that it's quieter so if someone 20 rows away has something to say you'll hear it loud and clear.

It's all good,
Anyone can go in, just show your ticket to the stewards at the door. Good to have a sit whilst the kids play.

With 10000 on the kop singing “fuck off wednesday, the city is ours “ it doesn’t matter where you sit. It isn’t hearing the swearing that matters its knowing which are the words you shouldn’t repeat that makes the difference. I have 3 grandkids who have heard ever swear word going but none of them ever use them around the house. Probably all swear like fuck in the playground though 😂

First away game I took my lads to they were 6 and 8 years old. In the first half, we hoofed it ineffectively, had a man sent off, and went a goal down.

At HT, the old chap with a beard sat three seats away leaned over in front of them and said to me, "That's a few new words they've learned, then".

Last season you needed to show a match ticket to go in and there was a limit, but I don't think they bothered on Sunday. It's a brilliant facility for the kids when you want to get to the ground early.
