Our season starts at Portman Rd! Keep the Faith! ⚔️
(You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one 🎶 😆)

Remember us going to Portman Road for the first game after Bassett had gone and Howard Kendall had come in, and after a string of defeats, we started to turn it around and we drew 1-1. We suddenly looked so much better as a team as HK had changed our tactics virtually overnight and we looked a very good and dangerous side. A few weeks later we had beaten Arsenal in the FA Cup at the Lane, and we were on a run of wins. It can be done, especially with such a shake up of the team, but it has to click into place quickly and Selles or whoever is in charge needs to see the previous errors and change the formation and team patterns and tactics to suit the players.

Just to be clear on the above, i was a huge fan of Bassett, but even his jovial upbeat character has been beaten into submission by the then United board and his light had gone out that season and it needed change.

At least now we can see Selles metal. He has the basic material needs so over to him and fingers crossed. There is a huge amount of pressure on him with the start we have had and the toy cupboard he now has available so we really are looking at not dropping points from here on in. Go for it... UTB

Same here, my fondest memories are from the Bassett era. Having said that, Kendall worked wonders when he took over.

I don’t think you understand how the business of football works and possibly wider business dealings.
And before you tell me, I do understand it.
Plenty of clubs got there main business done early in the window. Even Selles said a couple of weeks ago that recruitment hadn’t been good enough. It looks like the owners have changed stance as to what needed to be done. I’d say you don’t understand it as well as I think you do.

You understand how it works at a mismanaged club like United.
Obviously less understanding of those clubs that somehow manage to get their business done earlier and don't chuck the first month of the season.
Can you list these clubs so we can see what they’ve spent and where they finish?

So exactly who is going to be able to win a ball up front?
We have 3 CF's all of whom have little aerial ability as they prefer to play off a bigger striker.
Maybe we play with a false No. 9 a la Barcelona.
Can't see a problem with that as we've done so well without one so far.
PS - how is Moore doing these days playing for that well known dinosaur Parkinson?
He’s doing as well as Jack will - imo

The owners have put time and a lot of cash to save Selles. Now he needs to get a run of wins going and stop bleeding valuable points .

Maybe the idea is to pass the ball to the strikers rather than hoof it at their heads?

I was originally responding to the “it’s been a total clusterfuck” comment which simply isn’t the case because the window is the length it is for a reason.

We’re a club with parachute money and a relatively healthy budget boosted by Anel and Souza sales. The flip side of that is other clubs know we’ve got money to spend and if we come in early in the window their price tags will be inflated.

Bettis has been clear on this before, even going back to the Wilder years saying we won’t be held to ransom, and if that means waiting until later in the window then so be it. (He mentioned this in his Radio Sheffield interview a couple of seasons ago.)

The strategy hasn’t been to sit on our hands. The board’s intention has always been to strengthen, but they’ve also had to balance the books of player sales, moving wages off the bill, avoiding another Cannon type deal. That takes time, and unfortunately the timing has been magnified by our poor start to the season making logical, patient business look like panic when in reality it’s been about waiting for the right opportunities.

There were probably some deviations from the plan because no TW ever goes perfectly. But to claim “we should’ve just done our business earlier” misses for me. The market doesn’t work like that, and in our situation it would have meant overpaying. Far from being a clusterfuck, IMO it’s been a pragmatic approach of holding your nerve, getting value for money, and avoiding being ripped off just because fans want instant movement. Imagine another Cannon price? Some of our fans would’ve committed suicide.

But like I said, this has all been inflated due to our poor start which I don’t think has been the fault of an inactive TW. This is proven by our finish last year and a fully capable squad of getting at least 9 out of 12 points so far this season.

I appreciate where you’re coming from and the approach made by Bettis/the board but there are considerable downturns as well. Like this season and in the past we have made very slow starts due to lack of personnel and then new recruits have to hit the ground running with instructions/tactics etc and need time to gel. Before you know it a quarter of the season has gone. This has affected us so many times in recent years and we’ve often played catch up. There are pros and cons whichever way you look at it and I appreciate some late deals can work out better (Gibbs White, McAtee etc) but surely it’s in the best interests to get the vast majority of your squad ready for the start of the season? Personally I’m all in favour of the transfer window closing before the season starts then we wouldn’t have so much scrambling around with daft money thrown all over the place (in general, not just us)

Definitely in favour of closing early but realistically it won’t because of the later start to the Prem season and later finishes to the previous season including long pre seasons and tournaments.

But, we are in a relatively unique position of having parachute payments which is both a benefit and a hindrance in terms of negotiating which I think is why we are later. Gibbs White and Macatee are results of prem loans opening up later in the TW too.

That’s where we’re at. If we don’t get promoted this season then next summers TW will be completely different with a more limited budget and if we do the same (which I don’t think we will) then I make you correct. Basically Shit or bust.

Effectively a brand new squad. How long they need to gel?
At least they can put some challenges in now , some were playing as though they did not want to get injured with transfer window looming and possible prem moves which never materialised...

Hate to be factual but I said the PREVIOUS game to Middlesbrough. The original post stated we had not had a shot on target in the last two games.

Gives like to previous poster.

Looks at shoes.

Slinks out, hoping nobody is watching.

And, just while we're at it, it isn't just the 1st team that have had a lump of new signings!
The women's team has also had to be totally overhauled this window!
If you look at the amount of players that the new owners have brought in, in both teams, then they seem to be giving the club a good going over....

Just need to sack Selles now, and bring in someone we can get behind!

I'm gona put my neck on the line, and say that this is in fact NOT one of our best transfer windows yet.

Only Tanganga has looked remotely decent so far, and we've weakened the starting 11 significantly.

McGuiness upgrade on JLT
Tanganga stronger than Anel.
Mee MOM today
Ogbene created goal

Vini seems irreplaceable, Matos looked better today, but long way to go

What is disappointing is how light we are up top, Campbell struggling, Cannon is just wank - Billy would be a better option as a sub, and he’s 47 now

Matos did look better but that’s probably because it was Soumare? 🤔🤣
