Expect it to be Clough

If you don't think there's "an awful lot in between", then you're just been led by "available". There's nothing else to go on. The stats speak loudly for themselves. "Did OK under the circumstances" would be considered extreme flattery here.

If we can't extract the likes of Paul Cox from Mansfield then I'd have to agree, he might be our best option. Fuck me, how bad is that? I'm afraid I'll have 2 lads who'll probably jack it it though if we have any more of this blandness coming our way.

"Game changing" - my arse.

If the list of "extractable" managers has Paul Cox at the top then I'd suggest there is indeed very little out there... A non-league manager would be as big a gamble as Weir was.

If you think we could get Johnson from Yeovil I disagree. If you think Pulis would come, I doubt it. If you think we could get Slade, I'd say it's possible but then he has as many promotions out of this division as Clough, and he could yet finish mid-table anyway.

You don't rate Clough - great. So where are all the options?

For me Cox is the ideal manager. Has succeeded at every level he has managed at and slowly worked his way up the ladder. You would think he would jump at the chance to manage SUFC, especially as we could at least double his wages.

The only barrier may be having to pay compo to Mansfield as well as Weir and Carsley...

As I've said, if the extent of our ambition is "on the dole", then you've nailed it. We might as well jack in, but you've nailed it.

Paul Cox turned around then had 2 promotions at Eastwood, then turned Mansfield around and took them into the League with another promotion. They re now riding high and in the race to overtake us.

Other alternatives were Rotherham's and Yeovil's managers. Because unlike Cough, they've demonstrated it, several times. If I'm being too ambitious by targeting Mansfield, Rotherham and Yeovil then my word, we're in trouble.

How much do you think it cost to pay off Weir et al? And how much would these three clubs ask for us to relieve them of their staff? (not that I think Johnson would accept anyway)

In the FFP world of the lower leagues this does matter.

I thought FFP was about your playing staff - over 21s?

I hope it is not Clough or Pullis. Two uninspiring choices.

Clough had resources at Derby and on balance achieved nothing. Pullis took years to get Stoke going and is renown for a direct style of football which is old fashioned.

I say splash the cash and get O'Neill. A really big promotion bonus is the way to do it.

I which case I'm talking bollocks. :)

I knew you'd see sense.

:D

I all seriousness, I'd be surprised if any of them would cost must more than a few hundred grand. When you consider how much is squandered on poor player choice, and lost on languishing in lower leagues, it's small beer.

It has been proven that O'Neill is shite without John Robertson. In my opinion he would be absolute garbage at this level without a boat load of cash

I’m really pleased we got rid of Weir before we became doomed to relegation; that post-match interview after the Hartlepool defeat was embarrassing and exposed him as the clueless, dour man that I suspect he is.

I’d just like us to get a man with some character, humour and ambition regardless of the style of football. That said, I really don’t want Pulis and his stupid cap; horrible man. Out of the “name” candidates in the betting, Roy Keane would be my choice - I think the job and location would suit him and he’d certainly shake things up.

I really can't see it being anyone other than Morgan. He has already been put in charge, if there was a superstar manager waiting in the wings they would be in charge for Coventry. There was only him and Weir interested in the summer and we are in a bigger mess now. The idea of o'neil, pulis or clough coming are pure fantasy. No name manager will touch a club at the bottom of division 3 with a barge pole. I don't want him but beggars can't be choosers.

I've got as much chance of getting the job as Morgan. He knows he is only filling in for one game. League position wise we are in a worse position than in the summer but financially we are much stronger. I don't think there will be a shortage of decent applicants.

So we get someone from the 'could play, can't manage' pool again?

At least Robson had not ended a player's career deliberately.

Odious man who can't manage because he can't cope with players of lesser ability.

How long before he walked away because he didn't like the hotel he was staying in?

Leave him to try and big himself up with a few controversial comments on ITV

Karl Robinson

Not sure pullis is the man manager we need right now, although being at the game the other night makes me think others think differently. All our forwards and midfielders are little uns

No No and thrice NO!

TC - I agree he comes across as a nob on tv, and hasn't pulled up any tress in management yet, but I said he'd be my choice from the "name" candidates in betting (and it's not a great list is it?!).

Agree re. 'names'.

Keane is just one of those who really riles me!

And this sums up the whole scam that being a football manager is.

A pay-off for fucking Weir??? I wonder how many people McCabe has interviewed and said 'Oh, and if you totally fuck up, we pay the next 2/3 years of your wages.'?

Reading this thread, it's obvious that our next manager will be an enormous gamble.

FWIW, I'd install Warnock to do a 'Red Adair' job until next May. If not (tin hat time) De Canio. Prior to his appointment, Swindon were going nowhere. 0-4 at Rotherham today. His legacy has been laid.

Someone will want to prize Cox away from Mansfield, i will guarantee that. And it will probably be a club in a higher division than we are. What he has done so far is impressive. He's put in the hard yards, but is still young and deserves a shot at a higher level. To be honest, he may even think we aren't big enough for him. The way things are going it would be no surprise to see Mansfield overtake us next season. I would love us to get him. This "non-league manager" stuff is hilariously irrelevant. For a start he is in League 2 and doing very nicely, but the main point is nobody has done it at a higher level until they get the chance.

I'd rather go with a guy who has earned his stripes at a lower level, than some showoff fancy pants international who has never achieved anything as a manager. Hiring a manager is just that, i don't see how being a good player is particularly relevant. You can know the game inside out, without being that good at it yourself. If you hire someone to manage a cleaning business, you wouldn't expect them to have won the international shithouse scrubber of the year award.

I have to hold my hand up and say I didn't realise who Paul Cox was. I think he would be perfect for us.

I do believe there is someone waiting to be appointed and I suspect thats why Weir was sacked on Friday afternoon when all the paperwork for his successor was completed

So why wasn't he appointed Friday?

Agree and that echos the comments of a replacement in days, not weeks.

Dont want Clough and I don't think it will be him. I'm convined HRH will want a marquee name....I'm hoping De-Matteo but I have an awful feeling it could be Sven

My sources tell me it's Roy Keane. This has come from an unlikely source so have no idea of validity.

He has certainly beaten far more division 4 clubs this season than we have, and scored significantly more goals against them!

I didn't really know much about Cox but from google, his record seems quite impressive. Ok, he hasn't managed any higher than the 4th division but has done really well at Eastwood and Mansfield. 50% win ratio over 369 games is impressive. Someone higher will take a punt on him soon.

Paul Walkers tweeted he would be surprised if it's not Clough

He's a bit fat Paul Cox, 'not sure he'd look great in a whistle... but at least he doesn't wear a cap. He'll do.
