Evans & Lavery

Lavery made several good runs throughout the game and was not picked out - he kept their backline honest with little to nothing to feed off all night. My opinion is he is worth a punt on Saturday but we do require better in the long run.

If we have 3 fit strikers and opt for a change in formation rather than just replacing Clarke with Evans/Lavery it will tell us a big story.

Our recruitment upfront has to improve.

The thing that frustrated me at the time of Evans' signing, and has since been justified, was that his 'punt' was INSTEAD of another striker rather than as well as. I don't think anyone believed that we didn't need a striker, so his signing suggests that he was in fact instead of us signing another, more proven, striker.

I was against his signing, yes, but I wouldn't have been anywhere near is much if we had signed another first choice striker, with Evans as an extra 'roll of the dice'. All his signing has done is fuel the conspiracy theories. I have too much respect for Wilder to believe it was his decision alone.

Evans needs some regular football and I think sending him out on loan to League 1 or 2 would be to our advantage. Lavery - jury out for me. Let's see a bit more of him and see how he does. Has some good points but not sure if he's good enough at this level.

As I've said, maybe Evans won't come through. But 4 games (and not full games either) is no time to make that call. Time will tell.

Lavery ?? Time has told. Time is more or less up. IMHO.

I can hear it now.

"Hello it's SUFC here...
Yes, I'm fine thanks....
We've got a shit striker who has only scored a handful of goals in the last five years and has some issues...
Could you possibly be a good chap and stick him in your team for a few months?
Obviously if he gets good again, we'll have him back in a jiffy....
My regards to your wife and kids, bye....."

I find the mentality that's willing to give Evans all the time he needs to come right but ready to bomb Lundstram out of the club after similar showings, fascinating.

Don't even mention the possibility of recalling George Long.....

Correct.

Also, I'm finding people are hugely over criticising Lavery now, in order to make Evans not look as bad. As I've said many a time, if everyone would treat Evans like any other player, fine. But they seem incapable of that, are making any excuse for him they've can.

'He's not match fit' is my favourite. Well, why has he been playing in MATCHES then? Even started last night. It's just an excuse to give him an extra couple of months to magically turn it around. It's not happening, lads.

I don't agree on Lavery.

How many games / minutes has he played for us ?

It's not a case of judging Lavery against anyone other than Lavery himself.

Over 30 odd games, he hasn't nearly done enough. The electric pace we were promised is simply a figment of someone's imagination. He's decent in the air but nowt special. His finishing is poor and his decision making is worse.

I don't need a poor Ched performance to mask what Lavery is (and isn't!). I can make that distinction.

We need better. It appears the manager may think the same way.

I think we all know why.

No idea what the facts are mate but I've wondered the same.

Like you once he had cleared his name I had no problem with us taking a cheap gamble on him.

However I trusted Wilder and the staff to be on the ball regards the risks and how long it could take even if he was to get up to speed.

Therefore surely we had to be looking at him as for down the line maybe, not for immediate Championship impact.

The fact that Lavery has been dropped from the squad and Hanson could be leaving, makes me think surely we're lining another striker up.

Evans looked off the pace. I thought Lavery was OK but not great. But to be fair to them both, they were up against one of the best centre halves in the country who we've all seen make Benteke look shit.

I thought all their defenders looked decent. I'd take any of those Leicester players on loan, even Musa.
The truth is, we're still adapting to the standard of the championship and it's another step up again to the PL. Shakespeare got a good blend of players last night, plenty of experience and players with something to prove. He didn't make the mistake of underestimating us.

Add to that we made 8 changes with predominantly L1 or untested players. They made 8 changes - with 8 more premiership quality players.

Not sure about KIng in midfield but yeah, most of their players would have got in our side. Maguire, Gray and Chilwell particularly impressive and Slimani a handful up front. Musa was a bit speedboat with no driver but would be nice to have someone that quick in our ranks.

Exactly, as I said in another post, we'll have hardly had a chance to work with that side on the training ground, one making his debut, couple in unfamiliar roles and a couple who've barely played for us so far.

I'd take King without hesitation but it's all about opinions.

My favourite is "he needs another pre season" having just had one for us and one for Chesterfield before last season.

That ones straight out of the Book of Cliches when people have got nothing constructive left to say.

Neither looked anywhere near good enough to play in the Championship.

At least Lavery tried and put a shift in. Too often looking for free kicks instead of the ball though. Also too slow in thought and making wrong decisions.

Evans was bloody awful. Looked like a sad sack. Hardly tried or closed down and couldn't hold the ball up for toffee. Everything about him was slow and lethargic.

We need two new strikers for me.
For me Lavery put himself about and still has something to offer.....how long are we going to give Ched?....he is not of the required standard and if we are honest we all knew it....I think send him out on loan and get somebody else in...Sorry but this is the reality.

It's not the worst move to shop him out until January and hope for the best. Same can be said for Lavery who desperately needs a run of games under his belt. We're frighteningly short in attack. 2 goals in 4 league games is not a good average.

That side had the guy they signed from Brighton for 12m, musa and slimani who cost c20m each. Maguire who cost 17m, couple of centre mins/right backs that cost about 10m a pop. 2 England u21 youth internationals.

Reserve side is generous - they would survive in the prem and walk the championship.

In reality, that's what most Premier League reserve sides look like in cup competitions. I don't think they'd walk this league either.

Perhaps we could loan Evans to Donny and bring Whiteman back?

Agree Evans looked out of sorts tonight, hardly touched the ball
But it's his 1st game where he's started so has an excuse,
however it's fair to be concerned as it might not be until Xmas at the earliest when he starts firing.

Agree

Good things come to those that wait.

I'd give Thomas a up top role with Billy. I know he's a winger but on his showing against Walsall he is fast, a goal scorer and can beat his man.
