Strange move... thought he was more midfielder. Don't see why Chelsea would loan him tbf, how much would he play here...

I’ve seen a lot of him for Wales and I’m not sure he would be tbh. He has an excellent reading of the game, and a good array of passing. He’s more suited to creating from the middle than being the man to run in behind to the byline and cut it back accurately. Unless we significantly change the RCB role from what it is currently, I don’t think he’d naturally fit.

While standing by this, I’d qualify it by saying at the time I’d seen him more in a DCM role – since posting this he’s been more often played in defence, and I do think he could be moulded into the RCB.

I am getting some mild Woodburn flashbacks though in terms of my enthusiasm vs reaction here. People do need to understand he’s not the finished article, he will make mistakes, and it might take some time. He’s 19, and has started 6 league games in his career to date at any level. He has played about 10 mins of Premier League football, 3 years ago. He in contrast has played about 15 times for Wales, and is doing well.

Was superb for Chelsea against Spurs in the Champions League. Quality centre half but can also cover the spoiler midfield role ala Besic.

Absolutely not as far as I'm concerned. He's the least dynamic, most boring, overrated, side-to-side motherfucker I've ever set eyes on.
I'd be disappointed to waste a penny on him. And his tash is worse than his barnet.
You happy about this then Keef I take it?

He’s a shoe in for those games away at Anfield and the Etihad when we need an extra defensive body in midfield

He's definitely cover for both defence and attack. Would be a very good deal for us that being the case... but not sure where the value is for Chelsea or the lad himself.
If he rates himself as much as he should he should fancy his chances at breaking into the team

Chelsea obviously it seems would prefer to see him attempting to break into a PL side as opposed to a full season of Championship football because they don’t think it would be of much benefit to him

Really hope we have an option to sign him, seems like he would really struggle for a 1st team spot with the way Chelsea go about their business, and if he is keen to make the leap over to us permanently after a decent season, then we want to be guaranteed as first in the Queue for him, could be a clever way to start getting our targets over the line, rather than losing them to Fulham, Villa, or whoever our rivals will be this time next year

Some reactions to this potential signing really highlights a lack of football intelligence from some of our fans.

Last season we were dependant on a settled 11, as soon as that was broken we struggled. Injuries, suspension, fatigue, etc.

We had adequate cover in some positions that allowed us to put sticking plasters in place on occasions. Unfortunately towards the back end of the season they were more like bandages and we faded away.

Had we had a stronger SQUAD then I have no doubt we would have finished higher.

Our wing-backs played virtually the entire season without competition and no doubt suffered from fatigue in turn impacting form.

We were reliant on Basham playing that role for the entire season - rarely getting subbed or rested.

Norwood - form was up and down, but again having to play every game.

We could go on.

The signings of the two Derby players are so perfect its a masterstroke from CW. Tailor made for that wing back role, young and with no pressure to be first choice immediately. These positions are now the strongest area of our squad. It gives CW the option to comfortably pick and choose games for rotation, or making substitutions to limit minutes and prevent fatigue. Its a great transfer for us.

Ampadu - an international player that gets nothing but plaudits for his performances at that level, is coming in with the ability to cover a specialist RCB role and defensive midfielder role. We have one specialised defensive midfielder and he's injured (Berge). Our only other player capable of stepping into that role during a game...Chris Basham.

What cover do we currently have for this? No one.

Stop worrying or thinking about which players drop out for new ones. Its silly to think like that.

Agree massively, if none of the squad players play we have been lucky with injuries and out best 11 has played every game, but we need to have the confidence that the fringe players are good enough to step up if needed. We are in that position this season. Last summer we needed first team bodies to strengthen the first 11 we didn’t have the chance to buff the squad out properly, we started that project in January, Retsos, Robinson and Zivkovic. Now we are in a better position with the overall 25 man squad than 12 months ago

Unless he's coming with a guarantee of playing every week I don't get how it benefits both parties? It's good for us as we get a decent player/backup option for a season with no commitment. He's likely to sit on our bench unless we have an outgoing defender/CDM so not sure what he gains?!

How many players have joined with a guarantee of playing since CW took over? Surely it's down to the player to prove he's worthy of a start. If he's not getting games then Chelsea of course have the option to recall him

Wrong. Sorry mate. Very wrong.

How can you say he's likely to sit on our bench.

Like Osborne and Jack Robinson did? Or like Sander Berge/Lundstram?

Would you want to play Basham, Egan, Lundstram, Berge or Norwood for 90 minutes x 38? Do you not think it'd impact form?

Would you not want an extra specialist defensive midfielder for tough games against the big boys?

Does it not cross your mind that when he gets a chance he might be better than what we have?

Al those scenarios, but he wont get a chance or gain anything from the move?

With very few teams in the premiership playing lump ball, to players like a Big DAve. The prerequisite for a player in our back three is athleticism, anticipation and good ball / passing skills, still wary of it leaving us light when we concede dead ball positions for the opposition to load the box with their centre halves but as a guy to fill a gap in our squad have to go a long way to get better.

No.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Not sure.

I get why it's a good deal for us. We get all of the things you've said above, I want the lad to come. I just don't see how it benefits him on the face of it, other than that he's closer to a chance of playing than he is at Chelsea but is still relying on injuries/fatigue/loss of form to play.

He could come in, play every game and we might all be saying "Chris/John/Oli/John/Sander Who?" by the end of the season, but then he's still going back to Chelsea.

I'm not against the signing, I just think it's better for us than it is for him on the face of it.

I'll be honest with you, I've only seen him play in the video Bergen posted in the 'defender' thread. He looked very composed on the ball, great distribution but incredibly lightweight (on the back foot/slow to react) in the tackle and in the air (no strength/easily bullied). He also pointed like Collins after completely misjudging a long ball.

He looked to be playing a sweeper role.

Obviously, it's unfair to judge a player from one game but I'd have a few concerns about how he'd perform against a strong and powerful forward and a direct team.
