I see that Chesterfield have been allowed to bring a keeper in on loan because of an injury to Lee. Surely we should be allowed to bring a centre back in - but will we?

No I think you can only bring in keepers at this time of year. It's like when a keeper gets a knock during a game and gets treatment he doesn't have to go off the pitch

There was a famous precedent set in 1999. Carlisle United of Division 4 (or whatever it was called in that year!) went into the final three games of the season without a keeper (one on the books, he got injured), the FA allowed them to sign keeper Jimmy Glass from (coincidentally) Swindon Town on loan. There was no precedent at the time and it caused a bit of a stink, although Carlisle were bottom of the league and surely doomed anyway, so it didn't matter, right? (>football Gods enter stage right).

The final game of the season Carlisle played Plymouth at home, having gained some ground on 23rd place Scarborough (back in the day when 1 team went up/down from/to the Conference), but still a couple of points behind them. At the whistle Scarborough drew with Peterborough 1-1 to "cement" their place in league football. News came through that Carlisle had lost, the fans invaded the pitch, players/fans/the manager went ballistic, and that was the end..... (>the football gods wave to remind the audience they are still watching)

Of course, the game at Carlisle hadn't ended, deep, deep, deep into extra time (a minute over added time!) they won a corner. The on-loan keeper, who shouldn't have even been on the pitch for Carlisle, stormed up the pitch. A Carlisle player hits the ball which is parried by the keeper, it loops high in the air and lands at the FEET of ... (oh shit, not him!) the keeper (why HIM? Why not a striker???), who hits it on the volley and smashes it right into the top corner. Pitch invasion. Whistle.

Carlisle stay up. Scarborough go down. The FA introduces a NEW rule AFTER the end of the season that allows for emergency keeper loans.

(this goal was named one of the "50 most important goals ever" by The Times!).

Swiss , there has got to be a goalkeeper out there somewhere who we could get on loan , if he played CB at school.

We have centre backs available in McGahey and Collins and it would be argued that it's the same situation we've been in for the entire season.

Keeper is seen as a specialist position where as, apparently, any player can play centre half, especially if you play for the Blades.
