Literally gives me the heebie jeebies I thought he was great at first but he had at least 2 free headers which he skied and when he's on the ball he always looks backwards to pass it to wes it might be an unpopular opinion but that's what I think.

First name on team sheet every week this season. Don’t forget the shit he’s got alongside him at times, mention no names.
The blokes class,he will go and I wish him well, 2 millions way out! 10 million and you get a class act.Maybe head back to Brentford instead of that useless fucker Pontious Pilate

If only he put in as much effort for us as he does for Ireland. Been generally poor since JOC got injured. Should be marshalling our defence but is regularly caught out of position and hardly opens his mouth.

Out of position on both goals vs Reading. Being in control of the space in behind is his primary job. Obviously he's not alone in being at fault. Uremovic tries to press, but he's unable to get a challenge in. Both Norwood and Hourihane are too high and are easily bypassed and lacks the pace to get back. So Laurent gets the ball and turns.

This is a real danger situation. Our midfield is gone, as is one centre half. An opposition player is allowed to turn unchallenged and run and pick a pass. Egan and Davies have to drop back to prevent the space in behind. Davies does this, but Egan gets caught in noman's land half heartedly attempting to close down Laurent. Laurent picks his pass perfectly for Joao to run onto and score.

I've seen Davies get most of the blame from fans, but he really needed Egan to drop down with him. Together they may have got control of the room in behind and a bit later one of them could have challenged/held up Laurent. Let's not forget Baldock either. He should have realised Uremovic was awol, and looking at the screenshot, he's in a decent position to get across and press Laurent, rather than sticking with his man out wide.

2nd goal:

As the free kick is swung into the box, Egan is too high up the pitch and we don't have the players in place to deal with a knock on. Egan ends up clinging on to the player closest to him, so he may argue that his man didn't score, but he really should have been sweeping up from a better starting position as the free kick was struck.

Again Davies is singled out for criticism as he lost the header, but we will lose some headers in our own box in situations like these. When we do - we need to be organised enough to deal with the following header. Surely Egan needs to accept that wasn't the case on this occasion.

There are players in the squad that have performed far worse than Egan this season imo.

Consistency being the order of the day, good players within the squad have just not shown it.

Exceptions for me are:

Bash when he got back in the side
Wes
Bogle before his injury
Billy ( has off days but I put that down to mostly lack of service)

Players who we don’t know which player is going to turn up. When they do, they tend to be very good

Fleck
Norwood
Davies
Robbo
Ndjaye
Didzy
MGW
Berge
RND
Stevens
Baldock
Egan

Players who for the most part we know which player will turn up

McBurnie
Hourihane
Mousset
Burke

Too many players imo fall into the middle category for this team to be consistent

Neither Gibbs-White nor Jebbison track the eventual goalscorer either. Similar failings against Forest late on.

Fool me once, shame on you Fool me twice, shame on me.

Seems we were too busy preparing to mount a counterattack rather than properly defend a set-piece.

He's an excellent CB at this level, ok at the level above. The best 'last-gasp' defender we've had since either Morgan or Holdsworth.

I also think he has too much responsibility and plays too many minutes. This has shown up the most with mental and concentration errors, both on and off the ball. He's been the only constant in a team full of flux, especially defensively and I think the strain of that has shown in that side of his game.

It's actually scary how little some of our fans know about football . John Egan has held our defence together for as long as I can remember and he is one of the best defenders we have had for the last 50 years . Some of our less football savvy fans will realise this when he's gone .
Absolutely correct.

He has played single-handed in many games when the whole team is pushing up (especially in the promotion and PL seasons)

How many centre back partners has he had to try to play alongside since JOCs injury, some of which have been pretty woeful.

Also defending with zero protection from a static midfield.

Great analysis.

On the second photo ............ why isn't 9' 3" Berge on the edge of the box defending the free kick, he's just stood in no-man's land ??

We know he isn't the greatest header of a ball but just his physical presence in attacking the ball could have helped.

Poor marshalling of players all round.

I’m starting to question if Egan gets back in the side when fit. He’s not athletic enough or as good as the current players playing cb.
he gets back in if were back in the championship next season but if we manage to stay up i dont think he would be an automatic choice in the premier league
