Big John Egan has dropped a couple for me. His positional play, passing and general basic defending has dropped from the high standards he has set himself.

Anyone else noticed this? Still our best defender but it’s noticeable now.

2nd guessing our invisible midfield not helping matters 👀 !

I get that folks rate Norwood. I understand what he is good at in the CM position he occupies.

But, when the oppos running midfielders ghost past him like he’s not even there, and do so with alarming consistency and regularity, you have to ask if the obvious positives are outweighed by the dreadful weaknesses ?

Never known a footballer so good at some bits yet so bad at others.

They nailed Norwood today, pushed 10 yards further up on us and he fell to pieces.

Egan was crap though, long balls over the top aren’t Norwood’s fault and should be food and drink for a decent centre half.

Agreed. But did you notice how he was further forward than normal today ?

Is normally our very last line of defence but, due to the reasons previously mentioned, was too high up the pitch leaving himself exposed to the longer ball.

Not blameless by any stretch. Had a poor game by his high standards.

But the relative ease in which our CM was brushed aside has left me with more cause for concern, and has done for some time now.

Yes he has had trouble with the ball over the top for years. remember him getting a red card a season or so back with the ball over the top. The only player to come back from Coventry with any credit is our goalie and to think we still let in four says it all. Center of our defence was so poor can not remember it being so fragile in a long long time,

Worth baring in mind he's played every game this season. He looks both mentally and physically tired.
His decision making today was hilarious. One completely missed header had him still running forward 20 yards to the centre circle, then he came from nowhere and jumped for the same ball as Gordon leaving the back door wide open, and as for the ball watching for the first goal….wow.
Still he wasn’t alone, Robinson was at panic stations all game and Gordon was a total fish out of water.
Other than Berge’s great goal, let’s forget that game eh?

We lost on lots of individual fronts today.
It's unfair to lay the blame.on one person.
We were brown toilet throughout.
Don't over toilet it.

I’m still so surprised wilder didn’t play to exploit this - any team that watched us last year would see those are our biggest weaknesses. Fair play to coventry

It was obvious from about 5 minutes in that we were set up far, far too high. It was clear as day. We thought we could just press onto them like we did in the Boro game and they just dinked ball after ball over the top of us. Why we didn't change it I've no idea.

They were poor all over the park yesterday, every single outfield player. The first line of the defence, the forwards were awful, it went forward, we lost possession and it came straight back at us.

I think there were a number of reasons for this, after Tuesday night there was probably some complacency "we just need to turn up for the three points", we're down to the bare bones of the squad now, so Hecky couldn't even change it around to freshen it up if there was tired legs after Tuesday. There was also a left back at right back and a young at centre half who probably isn't ready yet. We were up against a Coventry who played well.

They could do with eeking out two results v Blackpool and Barnsley, then have chance to regroup over the international break. I remember DBs promotion team in 90 getting spaknked 5-0 at West Ham and 3-0 at Oxford, you'll get the odd bad result over a season. We've done well since Hecky took over, get a few bodies back in April and we'll be okay.

Reminded me of Blackburn away..fuckin shambles at back..but fuck it...move on.
Agreed. The one positive we can take from this is it literally isn't possible to be that bad ever again. Genuinely the worst I've ever seen (defensively). Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

You're right though. Forget about it and move on without appropriating blame to individuals.

He was terrible yesterday. Worst player on the pitch by a mile.
Hopefully just one of them days

The problem for Egan he’s had to play with so many different players in the back 4 since Jack got injured that he can’t play his normal game. To use the word crap is ridiculous for someone who not so long ago was a hero with everyone.

You have a point about the midfield ,no legs in there yesterday.
Although we were poor defensively they were hung out to dry by our midfield three who are not blessed with pace or mobility.

West Ham sniffing if rumours are to be believed?

I'd cash in and try to buy Charlie Goode, Brentford are almost safe now and I reckon Goode will be available

Egan has always struggled against the ball over the top. He struggles to turn quickly and lacks pace. This was an even bigger problem in the PL where he was continually grabbing at players as they went past him, risking a red card.

He was decent enough when he had the excellent JOC alongside him but I’d be amazed if a PL team comes in for him.
