Egan today...

Deserves his own thread. Was easily a 9/10 in my view.

The amount of headers, interceptions and other clearances from him was staggering, and I'd be interested to see some stats on this.

Every time the ball went into our box, it was dealt with comfortably and we never looked like conceding. This is a follow on from Bolton last week.

Egan was the main reason for this today. Extremely solid and convincing display from him.

If he carries on like that, then there's no doubt he'll be worth the fee.

We don’t agree on much but I’m fully behind this!!

Increasingly reliable...

A lot of attention is toward are attacking prowess at moment and rightly so however...

Thought Egan was class tonight, likewise to the defensive unit. He’s a turning into a quality signing. Think him and Jack and Bash are a quality combination and I hope they keep it up!

UTB!

Plus we've got Stearman to come in when one gets injured or suspended...as well as Creanie as further back up.

Squad is so much stronger as the back and in midfield than last season. Shudder a little to think about what happens when Billy is out but hopefully Clarke is straining at the leash and surely we will spend in January

As good as we thought Wright or Stearman were in their respective seasons this Egan looks a step up in level. As CW clearly spotted.

Thought Egan had a great game tonight, but also noticed that once or twice when the opportunity presented he was prepared to carry the ball further out of defence himself. Don’t think I’ve seen him do that before tonight, even if it was only as far as the halfway line. Hope it’s a measure of his growing confidence and that it’s a pattern we’ll see more of when it’s the right move to make. Don’t think he’ll ever emulate our Harry, but good to see it.

Egan looks a very good signing. He has the recovery pace that Wright doesn't, and reads the game better than Stearman. This aspect of his game should also improve in the coming years. His short passing game has improved since the first few games too.His long passing game is already very impressive. It's exciting to think JOC hasn't quite reached his level yet. Basham has been outstanding - with the exception of the Swansea game.

When we paid £4million for Egan there were sighs of regret from some on here. "A waste of money", "Why spend it on a defender when we need a striker", and so on, and so on were the words heard. Yes, I too understand why new blood upfront would be welcome, but what was missed was the constantly changing nature of any team. These decisions are down to our manager, and we must trust his judgement when it comes to this. He'll live or die by who we buy, so rather than react hastily as some have a tendency to do, we're now seeing the rewards of his buying policy.

At the beginning of this season one or two on here called for Wilder to consider his position. All rather foolish and hysterical I think, especially as in the last couple of seasons we've started poorly too, yet each time we quickly managed to find our groove and those noises of discontent were no longer heard. With our 'pensioner' choice of forwards from which to select an attacking option we're not doing too badly. No doubt Wilder will address the attacking options come January, but the key issue is who he buys, not whether he buys someone just to appease those who seem eager to see new blood in a Blade's shirt. Now that we have Paul Coutts back in contention for a place in our winning side, our midfield options will only strengthen, and while this doesn't answer the questions surrounding attack, it at least offers fresh alternatives that most sides in this division would love to have. The return of Coutts will be like signing a new and accomplished player, and over the coming months we'll all see the benefits of his inclusion.......but returning to Egan, he's exactly what we needed, and Wilder need apologise to no one for bringing JE to this club. In the scheme of things £4million will seem a steal, just as JOC is now valued at a minimum of £15million, in fact possibly far more, so, over time, we'll see Egan's value to this club increase to reflect the contribution he'll make to our progress.

A player like Egan will only help to increase the standards we'll need if we're genuine promotion contenders. Sentiment plays no part in this, it's a hard, robust process, and I'm looking forward to seeing my club evolve and improve as each game is played and we move on to the next one. Last night's match had huge significance as it meant we not only kept a clean sheet but we managed to win well away against the supposed form team in this division. We put Blackburn to the sword, and in doing so took our place alongside those other teams who view promotion as a necessity. Perhaps some of us have developed a preference for this division, and consider a move to the Premiership something that might be left to those who should rightfully be there. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I want my club to be ambitious, that should be at the heart of why we exist, otherwise we might as well resign ourselves to bouncing back and forth between this and the lower divisions. Fortunately we have a manager, and players, who seem to share the opinion that we're equipped to take that next step forward. Being a humble club, as Wilder is keen to remind us, shouldn't be confused with a lack of ambition. The Blades deserve the chance to compete at the highest level, and so do their supporters. Anyone who imagines that's something we're not fit for should consider supporting any number of local teams who seem to struggle at this level.

In Early September, in a prediction of who would be POTY come May, I plumbed for one of Egan, Sharp and Coutts.

Just saying like !!

Amazing signing if true.Probably my number one realistic target. We've already got my number one realistic goalkeeper in, so I'm very happy with the quality of our incomings so far. This gives us the flexabilty in the squad to play a back four.We didn't really have that before. This kid is not a ball carrier at Brentford, which means he's unlikely to play RCB - unless we've abandoned the overlapping centreback idea.Egan is excellent in the air and hard in the tackle. Also fairly quick, which is important when playing a high line. Lets hope he can read the game like ol' leadboots.

Egan just needed to be given a bit of time to settle (like anybody does moving home and job at the same time). He always had the quality and good to see that shining through now. An excellent signing by Wilder.

Worth every penny Egan great signing feel a bit sorry for Stearman he’s more than a capable replacement.
Last night aside, we're still conceding soft goals. Egan's a capable defender at this level, but is he better than Stearman? Jury still out for me.

Don’t know what you expect but they don’t come better at this level

I’m a Stearman fan but Egan grows better by the game. Very good in the air considering he’s sub-Shawcross in height. Wins almost everything and gets real distance on defensive headers (more difficult than one might think). An organiser and, I’m told, a leader.

A very good Centre-Back at this level.
