If anyone has been burgled then I would suggest that the first place to look for their stolen stuff would be on the Facebook selling sites.

The Government seem to favour a reduction in sentencing in relation to house burglary and regard it as a less serious crime
I’ve never been burgled or have any relative who has, but nevertheless I can appreciate that it is probably the worst crime that most people will ever suffer. It imust be devastating to know that people have been through your family possessions and stolen family heirlooms despite their being of little monetary value.
If I was ever in charge I’d introduce a mandatory prison sentence of five years for house burglary. If they behaved, they’d be released after five years, if not they’d receive additional time.
Contrary to popular belief the Police are very good at catching burglars, with the advancement in DNA and forensic science. The problem is that sentencing guidelines dictate that these offenders are given just 3,6 or 12 month sentences, so as one goes in, another two come out, adinfinitum.
Burglars only make up a very small proportion of any community, consequently with a 5 year stretch, I can guarantee that within 12 months, every active burglar in the UK would be in prison and for the next four years we could all sleep easy in our beds. What’s more, when released they wouldn’t immediately reoffend, they could receive education, drug therapy.and there’d be many fewer illegitimate kids to take up the family craft. Initially there’d have to be new prison space, but ultimately I think it would reduce the prison population.
People say, but ‘Prison doesn’t work’, well I’d say, ‘that’s because they’re not in there long enough’
What’s more I don’t give a shit if they refuse to be rehabilitated, as long as they’re not in my kitchen at three in the morning, that’ll do me. If they reoffend, they get another five year.....simple

Is there something else to this story? My mate is a copper and he reckons if the dog bites a burglar in the house it is extreme may unlikely the dog would be put to sleep. If the owner "set" the dog on the intruder he could face consequences under the "dangerous dogs act" but again it would be unlikely the dog would be destroyed.
Apparently a different story if on land or in the garden though. He said a dog could be destroyed for biting someone if the dog is loose and unsupervised on a garden or land (farm etc). He did say that this is still unlikely if it's a family pet with no previous issues.
Not sure to be honest, I’ll ask him if I ever see him again, not seen him for a few years.

There's some research suggesting that the punishment doesn't even matter that much. What you actually need is the punishment to be likely. The reason these bastards break into house after house is because, for the most part, they get away with it.
When a shop I worked in got broken into (fortunately the idiots didn't know what they were looking for and didn't get anything of high value) the police took a few details, eventually sent out a forensics officer to look for prints, and told me that they didn't usually send one out but since there'd been a few similar break ins in the area they hoped if they caught them they could tie them to several jobs, but they made it pretty clear that they weren't expecting to.
That's the problem. They don't expect to get caught. They know there's some small risk but for the most part they'll do a lot of burglaries before they see a sentence. The punishment for copyright infringement is something ridiculous like up to ten years but everyone I know has streamed a movie, sporting event, or downloaded music because we all know that there's better odds of winning the lottery twice over getting done for streaming Sky Sports this evening.

It's not likely to deter them when they know they're out again in three months. It's is extremely unusual for someone who has served a significant jail sentence to be released and reoffend within a month. Conversely, your smack head burglar gets straight back at it, from the minute they're released until reconvicted.
As I'm sure you're aware, a very small number of burglars commit a huge number of offences and a significant sentence would soon see them all off the streets instead of the ridiculous merry go round the current soft sentencing perpetuates

I’m afraid that which you believe to be ‘extremely unusual’ is in fact an everyday event.
Burglars are sent to prison every day in every court in the land. There are always some spare to carry on the work the very same day.
A person sentenced for a third dwelling burglary is subject to a minimum term of three years imprisonment. Only the hang ‘em and flog ‘em and throw away the key brigade would think modern sentencing is soft.

No need to do that. I've got a mate in the Netherlands and he tells me the practice there is to set up special clinics in each town where junkies can drop in for a state supplied fix of heroin with clean needles. It cures the dealing and stealing problem to a certain extent and the junkies are not so susceptible to disease due to the hygiene controls in place. They can shoot themselves up to their hearts content and eventually they all die off prematurely anyway due to their addiction. The rub of it is though the Netherlands is held up as a beacon of liberalism and forward thinking for the pragmatic way they handle this problem when it's just a state sponsored extermination programme in disguise. I'm all for it by the way.

By the time they have been convicted of three burglaries, in reality they’ll have committed nearer sixty.
So if they are actually given a three year sentence, that of course is just 18 months in time served. Which is pathetic.
The sentencing in relation to house burglary is a joke and the very reason we see this revolving door of a nucleus of maybe 30 offenders who everyday devestate the lives of scores of honest citizens across every town and city in this country.
