Saddest transfer news for many a year - Stoke City fans don't have a clue what a gem they have got.

sad thing is i don't think they will see the best of him, his place was here, it was his time with us, will they play a system that suits him, i doubt it very much

can see him being stuck out on the wing, where he played most of his career, but can't see him being as effective in that role, i hope they use him right, i hope he finishes his career on a high with them

i'm gutted he has missed this chance to play in the prem with us

There's a way to approach everything in life. Wilder quite rightly wouldn't be bullied and had to lay down a marker. Wilder did Duffy a favour by not revealing too many specifics which thankfully will allow most people to remember the Duffy of the past three seasons, rather than somebody who sullied their reputation later on.


We all hope that we are remembered for our good side, and Duffy, imo, was part of the best United midfield since the 1970s. The triumvirate of Coutts, Fleck and Duffy married classical short passing football within a modern tactical framework. Duffy was the kingpin in the high press and provided the overloads and underlaps in the attacking half. It was also extremely difficult for the opponent to win back possession from Duffy in their own half which allowed the wide centre backs to get forward. Masterful stuff. GLTTL!

No we won't, we have moved on....the same as we won't regret Billy and Didzy making a dozen appearances between them all season....the same as we won't regret Ravel taking Flecks place, Besic keeping Norwood out and desperately waiting for the JTW to get a replacement for Bash.....all of those things may or may not happen of course but there's no place for sentiment in the Premier League so pull up your big boy pants and get in with it.

Guess we should just fall to all players demands then in the future. Don't be daft. Duffy will always be rememered as a Hero but jesus christ he's coming to the end of his career and wants to play regular football. Move on like Duffy certainly has.

People thinking that Freeman is a direct replacement for Duffy clearly haven't seen much of him. I've had plenty of tickets through work the past few years for QPR and seen plenty of Freeman, he is a very good player and an excellent signing, but he isn't the same type of player as Duffy. He is more direct whilst Duffy finds those pockets of space in the final third.

I really feel we are going to miss him in our system and this is a mistake for all parties.

I think it's a real shame. I thought Duffy would be outstanding in the Prem. I know in some ways it's faster and more clinical. But in other ways it's not. He wouldn't have had players hurtling into him at 90 mph like in the Championship. He'd have had more time to settle on the ball and do the damage.

I suspect he's his own worst enemy. He was chuntering about being subbed last season. TBH - I also thought it was unfair. There's many a time he's been taken off for no good reason imo. It must have been very frustrating for him.

But if he really did try and force a new contract, whilst stating, "I've got other options" then I don't blame Wilder for getting rid. You don't need too many of those around a team before they become the bad apple in the box.

I think the first time I saw him was when he played for Scunny (on the wing). I thought then what a very good player he was.

The lad has had a mixed career. I'm glad I saw him play. He's probably been the main reason (apart from Wilder) why we've progressed so far in such a short space of time. Gone but not forgotten anyhow - and GLTTL at Stoke. I think he'll help propel them back to the big time.

I’ve just been watching various YouTube compilations of our games since Wilder took over. It’s amazing how many times Duff’s featured heavily in the final passes before a goal.

Good luck Mark. You’ve been my favourite player under Sir Chris but I suppose if the time’s right for you, it’s right for us all.

Maybe it's the right time for us, but for him? No hope. It was his chance to play in the best league in the world. He'd worked and contributed to getting there, and could have played a part for us.

I don't know what's gone off in the background, but it's a damn shame he won't ever get the chance to show off his skills in the pinnacle of football. It's not like he's earning a ton more money, he'll be on the same contract and playing at a lower level.

Football careers are short, and personally, I'd be well pissed off if I'd missed the chance to play at the top. His msz might think he's made the right decision, but I wonder if he will in 10 years time?

Well that is Tufty Ball Mk I gone. Coutts and particularly Duffy were absolutely key to that style of play. The Pingmeister replaced Coutts and added his particular slant to our play - that didn't work out too badly did it! So over to somebody to take over from Duff and add your particular slant to our style of play.

Sometimes sequels are even better than the original ---- Tufty Ball Mk II coooooome on!!

I know what you mean, it's hard to imagine him being as successful elsewhere. Our system has always had 2 pivots to dictate play, one sitting deep in Coutts/Norwood and then Duffy as the advanced equivalent. Everything just clicked for him here.
I am hoping that Nathan Jones has studied this and wants to freshen up their approach after last year's debacle. A new system built around Duffy's skills would certianly be worth a punt.

I also hadn't noticed that both CCV and Hogan had also joined them. So at least that's 2 players who have played with him and understand what he can do.
