March 22nd 1975. Blades 3 (Currie 2, Woodward) West Ham 2 (Gould, Jennings). How many of you were aware at the time that it was our 86th birthday? I wasnt

Woody showing immaculate control in that clip! I remember Billy Jennings being constantly off-side in one game at the Lane, so much so that a pal of mine started complaining, in all seriousness, that the ref should book him!

24th March 1973 Blades 3 (Dearden 2, Bone) Derby 1 (Davies)

Derby had won their European Cup quarter final 2nd leg match against Spartak Trnava by 2-0 (winning 2-1 on agreggate) a few days earlier. They were drawn to play against Juventus in the semis in the following month. It was a big treat for the Blades fans to see their beloved team playing against a team who are due to play in the European Cup semi final. On a rainy day we hammered them with two goals by Billy Dearden and a great header by Jim Bone before Roger Davies' late consolation. Derby lost 3-1 at Juventus in the 1st leg (Brian Clough rarely criticised ref but he was very annoyed with the ref for not punishing Juventus brutal ways) and drew 0-0 in the 2nd leg. Juventus lost 1-0 in the final to Ajax (who won the trophy for the third time in a row)

Day late ,but Derby involvement again. 23-3-2004 ,we drew 1-1 at the Lane Andy Gray scoring for us. So memorable for me because we had our first daughter at 7.20 so I missed the match and got told off for looking at score alerts when I should have been doing other things :)

Going back to the West Ham match, I remember talking with Jim Brown a few years ago and he reckons the ref told him afterwards that he was about to blow his whistle for offside, saw that it looked an easy catch for Jim to make and let play go on as United had the advantage. The video clip seems to show the ref has his whistle to his mouth just prior to Jim's error

I remember Intake Blade saying in one of the football magazines (might be 4-4-2) that Jim Brown was our worst ever player despite that Intake being too young in having ever seen him play just because he saw Brown's error on the video. Told him in BU that Brown was a good keeper, popular with fans for his bravery and shot-stopping also winning the POTY for 1974-75 season.

Jim Brown gave the finest goalkeeping display I have ever seen at St James park Newcastle boxing day in the 70s. We drew 1-1 and Brown got a standing ovation and applauded off the pitch by all the players ,Malcolm Macdonald was one of them as was fanny magnet Alan Gowling.

Two for today, April 7th 1973, with new manager, Malcolm Allison in place, Palace had been bragging in the national press that he'd given the team belief and that they'd definately win at the Lane. Ultimately United never looked like conceding, won 2-0 and Palace were eventually relegated

Team: McAlister, Badger, Hemsley, Mackenzie, Colquhoun, Eddy, Woodward, Salmons, Dearden, Currie, Bone.

and April 7th 2003, a 1-0 defeat at Selhurst Park.

This was the lowest crowd (1,325) to have witnessed a Blades League game since 1897.

Was a good night out though,

Who's yer farther, who's yer farther, who's yer farther referee ..... etc

Is that baldy challenging Woody Peter Noble anybody?
No, That is John McLaughlin of Everton challenging Woody in our 1-1 home draw in March 1972. I remember the Man U game in April 1972. Attendance was 45,045 which was the biggest crowd for a match I attended at the Lane. John Connaughton was in goal for Man U and played well. We took the lead just before half time as Geoff Salmons attacking the Kop end unleashed an hopeful cross from the left touchline but the cross found its way into the net at the far post. Dave Sadler equalised for Man U. George Best and Bobby Charlton played in that match

Another two from today,

8th April 1961, (53 years ago) and a game against Rotherham united.

A 2-1 victory for the Blades with Russell, and Allchurch the goalscorers.

A repeat of that scoreline tonight would do very nicely.

and a bit more recent. 8 years ago 2006

I remember having a massive gash down my shin celebrating Unsworth's last gasp winner

Monday 8th April 1974 Blades 1 (Terry Nicholl) Liverpool 0.

We were short of strikers as Jim Bone had gone back to Scotland, Bill Dearden was out injured since January and Furphy had dropped Steve Cammack (or was he injured too?) so the number 9 shirt went to Terry Nicholl who was really a reserve midfielder (we must have been playing the false number 9 system then?). Liverpool had a very strong team but Nicholl struck the decisive strike at the Lane End but in the chances after that he caught the ball at least twice with his hands when the ball was played over his head which was strange (maybe he was still overcome with his goal?). Jim Brown made fantastic saves and it was the first time I saw us beat the mighty Liverpool and it felt good!

Keith Eddy also missed a pen in that game.

Regarding the 1973 match; according to statto.com, as well as our game at the lane, there was the small matter of the Semi Final at swine cottage, where Sunderland beat Arsenal 2-1 en route to one of the greatest cup upsets of all time. Can anyone old enough to remember recall whether this is correct, and whether SYP actually allowed both games to take place on the same day?

Yes, both matches were played on same day. I remember the photo on the front page of the Green Un was of Sunderland's Vic Halom pouncing on a bad back pass from Arsenal's Jeff Blockley to give Sunderland the lead

Thanks, Silent. Were the kick off times the same? South Yorkshire police would have a schizoid embolism if they had to do that today.

Think so, the 1969 semi between Leicester and WBA at S6 were also played on same day as we beat Bolton by 5-2 at BDTBL but in the following season we brought forward our home fixture against Carlisle (won by a Woody rocket shot) by one day to avoid clashing with the Man U v L**ds semi at S6
