A mate of mine just sent me this link to a thread on a Rovers forum where they’re discussing whether or not a swap deal for John Marquis would be a good deal or not. https://www.drfc-vsc.co.uk/index.php?topic=267403.0

God bless em, they’re delusional, or would anyone entertain this idea? Marquis is highly regarded around these parts & what I’ve seen of him, he had got talent, but no way would I want to swap him for Sharp

I suggested Marquis in the summer (it had already been done prior to that) and was pointed out he's been under Wilder before so given we didn't spunk any cash in that direction I'm sure this is a non-starter. Also my mate who has scouted for Doncaster Rovers described Sharps last stint with them as shite. This deal would be suicide for United as nobody else seems to find the net regularly enough and based on that I still think Sharp is the most valuable (to us at least).

We need to bring someone in, but unless that’s 3 strikers under no circumstances should we be letting any strikers leave. Regardless of who comes in Sharp can’t go anywhere.

Even the Blades can’t let their top scorer go again...

Was it that idiot Brian the blade or someone else who suggested it on radio Sheff after the game Saturday?

Sharp isn’t going anywhere and I’m sure if we wanted to sign any Donny player we could, quite easily.

We should keep thread because I bet that when Sharp goes 5 matches without scoring then many will be saying he’s too old, finished and we should we get rid.

The art of doing a good deal is having hindsight to sell when a player is still a salable asset, performing well and still rated, which Sharp is. A great example is Leon Clarke. If we’d have sold him for 5 million 6 months ago, our fanbase would have been up in arms selling one of the best strikers in the Championship on the cheap.........but now it looks like his days are numbered.

I suppose regarding Sharp and Marquis.....Sharp is right for now but there could be a severe downturn later this season or next season
Where as Marquis is only 26, one for the future and is still likely to improve.

As we have a realistic chance of promotion then SU still need to focus on the here and now. Would imagine that like Omar Boggle at Birmingham, Marquis won’t be up to this level, so patience would be needed with him. He’d be a downgrade compared to Sharp but in the future who knows regards how good Marquis might become.

He said Mr McCabe should give him a call and he'll tell him exactly who we need to sign to guarantee promotion, and Marquis was the main player.

A Donny fan then phoned up and said the only way we could have him would be a swap for Sharp.

He actually said Mester McCabe!

He has been saying the same thing for years. Mester Warnock, Mester Wilder, Mester Clough should have all rung him, because he has the wisdom and answers they are looking for.

In my experience people who purport to be wise and have all the answers tend to be big bags of wind and washed up amateurs who are best avoided.

So are Billy's whether you like it or not. However, as others have pointed out we keep him until the death as it's anyone's guess when that will be but we start phasing in new blood now. We could do worse than Marquis.

It was Brian the pissed up never been a Blade, who has been harking on with this for months. I doubt he has ever seen Marquis in the flesh but has just heard he scored a few for Donny last year. He is a cretin of the highest (lowest?) order and should be given no credence at all.

Marquis may or may not make it in the league, but it would be a gamble. Billy is proven at Championship level and I think is the highest scoring player in all divisions, currently playing. Why would we even think about swapping him?

I had never heard Brian the Blade until Saturday, he is either ill or he is a Walter Mitty character, talking about teams he has managed etc

Even when Billy is 'done' (which is further away than some think), I'd hope he can stay around and move in to a coaching role. He seems to have an appetite for doing that or management after he retires, so it'd make sense.

Regarding Donny, there is/was a fairly large Wednesday contingent in the town, which could go some way to explaining the comments.

He's both.

He is also a national embarassment to all Blades.

"When you've managed a team like wot I have.."
"For the sole reason of...."
"NC on the dressing room door"

Etc etc etc

If Billy continues doing what is he doing and in the manner in which he is doing it, then I see no reason why we should consider getting rid this season. I suspect he’s currently on for circa 15 goals god willing, and that is as good a return as you could wish for. McGoldrick hopefully will push on & avoid injury and get to double figures. LC is the one now feeling a bit of pressure.

I’ve not seen Marquis play, so can’t comment on his abilities, but it’s worth noting that he’s got 6 goals already this season, that’s only 1 more than Ched, and that might be a fairer swap. :)

I listened to a bit of P & G on the way home. Two minutes of that fucking idiot Brian had me putting some Metallica on instead. Why do Radio Sheffield give this moron the air time?

Billy Sharp is a far better player than league one.
He hasn’t declined at all since we brought him back under Adkins which is a testament to his professionalism. If anything he continues to improve and would not be short of suitors at this level should we lose the plot and decide he’s surplus to requirements. He’s got years left in him imo.

Billy looks leaner and fitter than he has the last couple of years, his experience is showing more and more these days. Plus he's scoring regular, why would we contenplate selling him, he's in his dream job, scoring goals, lives only a few miles away and he's hero worshipped, Brian, please stop picking the phone up when Football Heaven call you, you're not on a wind up, the joke is on you!

Because he can get posters on here to comment about something he’s just made up?

That's exactly what he was like last Monday when I listened for 20 minutes, didn't realise it was Brian but then he started spouting he used to manage Mitchell (our scout) when he played what a good lad he was etc. Whether true or not I don't know but he seemed to think it made him a scout too!

I’m not sure he’s too concerned that I prefer Mr Hetfield and chums to his wittering? Perhaps Radio Sheffield should be concerned that he gets people switching off in droves, but considering they are funded from the license fee then they probably don’t give a shit about it.

And of course the classics (sic)

What I wanna seh Andy”
“Cos believe you me Rob”

I've watched Marquis quite a few times for Donny. Works hard and is in some good form currently but Billy is much better in my opinion.
I can see Marquis leaving the Rovers but it won't be in a swap deal for Billy.

They could offer us the Marquis de Sade and throw in offers of half time orgies with beautiful women at the back of the kop, and I still wouldn't trade it for our beautiful Billy boy.
