Sorry to open this old wound. I need a debate settling please !

Did he miss at the Bramall Lane end (my recollection) or the Kop ?

Thanks

My memory of it is that it was the Kop end & he shot wide of the right hand post. My memory might be wrong though!

Kop end slightly wide of the centre of the goal if I remember rightly. I have a story about Don Givens and that penalty which some long - standing posters will be aware of.

kop end.

don penn for them blasted down the middle i recall

dont think mathews pen had the power to cross the goaline.

que carnage on the pitch, and there player alan buckley crapping himself as the kop descended on him whilst he was celebrating with there fans at final whistle

Here's the Walsall side with Ron Green, the goalkeeper who saved the fateful penalty, fourth from left next to Ricky Sbragia. Walsall's scorer Don Penn is on the right of the front row.

Sorry.

After his miss we all charged over to the Lane end. Police horses on the pitch, batons out, it was like fucking Orgreave out there.

Deffo you don't forget things like that, seared on my brain

Yep, Kop end.

No idea what happened to it. Didn't watch it, I was still sat down trying to digest that they'd just scored from their own penalty.
Anyway, thanks for that, put me in a fine mood for tonight's match!

Apologies but needed resolving before tomorrow.

i wonder what went thru alan buckleys mind when he turned round, laugh about it now but at the time it was the worst feelin ever

Kop End.
I remember the photo that accompanied the write-up in The Green Un. The look of sheer horror on Martin Peters' face as Givens missed that pen is etched into my brain.

It was on target...when it eventually arrived there such was the (non) ferocity of the strike!
Correct. Thought it was the worst day in my life as a fan, but what happened the next season made it seem the best thing that had happened in years.

Kop end, I was there. It took a while for it sink in, seemed surreal.

spoke to a walsall fan not so long back who was also there that fateful day, he and his mates claimed that was the only day he has ever feared for his life at a football match
said he felt like it was something like the alamo
