If we can stay top until the January transfer window opens does that mean that it will be easier to recruit quality players and give ourselves an even better chance of going up ?

Had a similar thought this morning Rammers, but mine was towards if we went up.
If we did go up, how many players would (still) think,"I won't sign for Sheffield, they'll probably go straight back down" and how many might look at the last 2 seasons and actually want to be part of the Wilder experience?

I somewhat agree, but to play Devils Advocate... who of the current first XI would you replace?

I think if we are in the top six let alone top it will make recruiting players that little bit easier.
All the teams below us would be ripe for cherry picking their best players if we wanted them. Whether we could afford them is a different matter.
Ryan Leonard must really kicking himself now.

I still dont get the insatiable desire to oust the players doing so well for us
who needs dropping or replacing with a "better" player
Id love to know

and the lads sat on the bench , they not good enough either ?
Substitutes v leeds
  • 1Moore
  • 7Lundstram
  • 11Donaldson
  • 13Wright
  • 24Lafferty
  • 36Brooks
  • 44Carruthers
All these could argue they deserve a place
so whos replacing these
Brooks get shot if he cant get in current first 11 for instance , is that the thinking

If and it's still a big if at the mo we do get auto, I would like to think that Tufty would give most of these boys a chance, if in jan and feb we are still going at it like the Mallard 100mph, there will be players in the prem league in teams that look doomed (we're doomed capt Mainwaring doomed I tell ya) that will perhaps look to come to us, it will be Tufty though that will sort the wheat from the chaff, can this player fit into our team, has he got the right prem league nounce and experiance...

Its a difficult one about who we replace but I do think we still need some quality up front. I know that Billy and Leon are doing amazing things at the moment and Donaldson looked great in his debut but we only have Ched and Lavery who have had long injuries as serious back up which I think is a great risk .Brooks is a difficult one as is he a striker or a midfield player even if he is an amazing talent ?

You only have to look at the Norwich match when we had no real strikers and I think if we had we would have won that match and now be even more in front !!

ridiculous , we should have beaten norwich and had 5 strikers out injured, was a one off , you cant point to one defeat to buy unneccesary cover

I don’t think it will affect who is on the list of targets Wilder has, but I think it might improve the chances we can get them. We’re an attractive prospect – join and impress and you could be playing Premier League football next season. I’m looking forward to seeing who we line up.

By the same token are we more attractive as a takeover target? Ground, crowd, league position, moneybags owners.... Ow, wait a minute...

Not if other teams are offering better wages.

Interesting to compare us and Bolton in those 2 tables from BTL above. Couldn’t happen to a nicer lot than those twats - had a run in with them on the train last season.

The Magic is Back

I made a similar comment a week or so ago, so it's a yes from me as you would think potential players would now jump at the chance of joining a successful team on the up and with the chance of playing in the Premier league!

Might just be selective memory but I can’t really think of many January signings that have given sides that extra boost over the line....

Can anyone point any out?

Certainly our January business the last time we were chasing promotion to the prem with warnock was complete shite and mostly a waste of money.

That said I’m sure we could add a young player with some pace and we would be more likely to get those sitting near the top of the league.

Antonio for the Pigs is one that sticks out for me.

But yeah, not many seem to come in and make that big of an impact.

Talking of strikers do we think Hanson will get a chance this season or is he done now for us?

The hope is our better players stay and go up with us instead of jumping ship to panic buying premiership teams hoping the top Championship players can save them from going down.
Would love to see West ham go down and us up

I'd love to see a strike force of Troy Deeney and Okazaki from leicester. Deeney's out of favour at Watford and Okazaki could be surplus too. Depending on the length of contracts, we could pick these up cheap and they'd work their arses off, while providing a bit of quality too. I expect us to be in that market when ad if we go up. Maybe a John Walters too.

So we'd be straight in for players on 50k plus a week.

Don't think so somehow.

Yeah perhaps you're right, but i'd also be surprised if upon promotion we didn't give pay rises to the current players to around 20k - 25k a week and make some bigger signings on around 40k. That's not a million miles from 50k.

I'm not bothered how much we spend, but i want to feel like we're getting value. You'd struggle to find two more hard working strikers in the prem than those two so they'd fit in well. Not expecting them to come in by any means, i'm just making the point that if we do sign proven Prem quality it'll probably be players in that mould.

You'd have to look at the 3 furthest up the pitch. They're all ageing and we'd need to get some serious quality up there of we're to compete at the highest level.

We have Brooks as a replacement for Duffy.

But I'd go out at get a good young striker on loan from the likes of Chelsea (like a Tammy Abrahams type)

last 3 teams that won 10 of first 14 games all got automatic promotion

Always one to buck the trend though...

Have I just jinxed it?

The stats, the ones like yours, do make for exciting reading though. IF we keep this up until the end then wow.

But my head is down at the minute. Tough game on Tuesday.

And I’d swap Hanson for Matt Smith at QPR. Not that QPR would take him, just sell Hanson and sign him
