Does anyone think it will do any harm to spend another season in the Championship?

Just a thought. We've spent six seasons in Division 1, and then Chris Wilder takes over and we perform miracles in winning that Division at a canter. It was wonderful and never to be forgotten.

Before we commenced as a Championship side there were all manner of noises, even concerns, about how we'd acquit ourselves this season. Fast forward to December and here we are at the top end of the table having played deservedly well. I think I'm safe in suggesting that the main concern for many Blades is who we'll buy in the JTW and how much our board will provide for Wilder to add to an already decent squad.

If we were to achieve promotion it would rank with our greatest achievements, but if we were destined to remain in the Championship for one more season - to strengthen the squad and ensure that we are better equipped to confront whatever the Premiership throws at us - would it be that dreadful a proposition?

Personally I'm not overly concerned if it takes another season to give ourselves a chance to ensure we're fit for purpose. However, if we achieve promotion this campaign then I'll embrace it as if my life depended on it!
Maybe we'd adopt the same approach as Burnley have, promoted-relegated-promoted, and each time on the receiving end of millions of pounds to strengthen our squad, making sure we're that we improve with the available funds. Would it be the end of the world? As I wrote at the beginning, just a thought, and I am, as always, suffering from the affliction that makes me a positive, if inherently cynical Blade.

No, in fact it'll give us way more time to strengthen for a promotion push and then try to stay in the Prem.

However, we do run the risk of losing Brooks...

Isn't this year a golden one in terms of that dreaded word, momentum... :D

I'm just content in knowing that we're in safe and capable hands. Whatever happens this season, we will continue to get stronger.

We might not go up this season, or next, or the season after. Who fucking knows?

No it wouldn’t do any harm, mate. But history tells us that you can’t pick and choose your time. Football, as you know, doesn’t indulge anybody’s convenience.

I agree with what you say but, as you rightly acknowledge, if that door opens, no hesitation, in we go and worry about further arrangements later.

I agree Danny. Should we be destined to remain for a further year in the Championship, no one should shed tears or suggest a lack of ambition. What will be revealed though is how the club responds in subsequent seasons by either showing a desire to progress or just accepting that our status as a Championship club is sufficient.

Perhaps but Brooks would go and some others could be past their best buy date by then.Which means more spending.

It'd also require a shift in attitudes on the terraces, I think. Realignment of what is classed as success/failure. Not going up this season still wouldn't be a failure (finishing top half on United's budget would be almost a miracle IMO)

No, I’m fed up of this shitty division and can’t wait to get back to our rightful place against our peer clubs, Man Utd, Arse, Chelsea......:)

If we’re good enough we’ll do it, top six approaching Christmas can’t be bad.

Will the Prince be willing to invest at the level we’re at now, as already mentioned, a fair few of our lads are 30+ or thereabouts ?

My view is that what we'd get from the terraces, assuming we achieved promotion, is a far higher, perhaps unrealistic, degree of expectation, rather than view our achievements in a broader perspective against some of the clubs who are almost permanent fixtures in the Premiership. I agree that what we're achieving, given our alleged spend, is a major positive for Wilder and the players.

If we don't go up this season and fail at the playoffs then don't expect 'we'll come back even stronger next year.'

Losing the play offs can have a huge negative impact on a club. Look at our superb team in 2003, we probably all thought 2004 would be a walk in the park. It took us another 3 seasons to get over that defeat in Cardiff.

Our neighbours still haven't fully recovered from their Hull City defeat. Fulham and Reading are struggling after last season.

We must make the most of the opportunity this season or it could be gone for a long time.

In addition I can't imagine Wilder having these thoughts of 'fancy another season in the Championship'?

On the flip side, plenty of sides have failed in play off campaigns and then won automatic promotion within a season or two.

The funny thing about football is that nothing is predictable, and just because shit happened a few times under different circumstances, doesn't mean it's likely to happen again.

Forget what others have done in years gone by. Under Wilder, at our club, the future looks good.

Hmm, like it's a choice!

We'd all love to go up, how unprepared we'll be. However, it would be sensible to build in this league and look to make a serious challenge next year. The problem there is keeping players. People mention Brooks but would we be able to keep hold of Fleck, O'Connell, (a fit) Coutts etc. Our wages are much lower than top-end Championship clubs. Wednesday can keep players because the players are on silly money. I'm pretty sure we'd struggle to keep happy players if other clubs are offering to double their wages.

once we get past 52 points we can relax in the knowledge weve moved forward no matter what, sustaining this level was the minimum target
we are in the mix to get out of it at the right end, which is beyond a lot of expectations
I would rather play the entertaining football we are doing and enjoy the ride and really only up expectation if we are still around where we are come Easter
If after 38 games we are in top 4 we should let the giddiness begin then

Personally, I'd rather us stay in the championship next season.

The time to strike is now.

Leon will be a year older. Duffy too. They could look very different for them both in a year.

The vultures will also have a summer to circle around Brooks.

Need to be able to make some signing signings in January. Cement a play off place and be the team nobody fancies to play.
