They both achieved little whilst playing for United and both contributed little to the team, other than goals.

I love it when people write this (and I've seen others do it). Makes it sound like anyone can get 20 goals in a season or one every 2 games.

It also makes it sound as if, besides the time BT was with us, we have been competing for European silverware every year.

>They dont need to chase after a ball 10 to 15 yards away like a headless chicken.
>Poor positional play and lack of concentration can be misinterpreted as hard work.

so now we've defined the axiom, i presume this is the case for certain midfielders as well then?:p

Forget it lets get Andy Gray off Barnsley he scored the other day.

I actually think the Andy Gray/James Beattie comparison is a pretty good one. They have a very similar goals to games ratio whilst wearing a United shirt. They both achieved little whilst playing for United and both contributed little to the team, other than goals. Both players were good at taking penalties and had an eye for goal. They were also remarkably similar in their work rate, ability to lead the line and lazyness. Beattie's goals ration was slightly better, but he played in a better team.

So you're only comparing their times at United and completely ignoring the rest of their careers?

In that case Laurens ten Heuvel was a better striker than Ian Rush.

Never said that. Just said they were remarkably familiar when playing for United. Only a fool would deny that BT was a decent goalscorer in the early 2000's. Mind you, Andy Gray has scored in the last few years (something your hero hasn't).

Maybe so but Andy Gray scored less goals than Beattie during roughly the same amount of time with us. Also Gray is a year older and by the looks of it still doesn't have as many Career goals as Beattie. So even with nearly 4 years in total of barely scoring a goal Beattie still has a better record.

My neighbour actually knows Andy Gray. I asked him to pass on the message that there is a guy suggesting he is a better striker than James Beattie.

Apparently he laughed and said you don't know what you're talking about.

Tarquin, never at any point have I said that Gray is better than Beattie. You lot can't handle any criticism of your hero, so you twist what I am saying. Gray's and Beattie were very similar whilst playing for United: lazy, uninterested, not a team player but good at taking pens, decent finishers and decent goals to games ratio. Both fell short of acheiving anything and after selling both players United performed better (though the link could just be association and not causality).

Like I said Bladesway, never doubted that Beattie is a good goalscorer and before his move to Everton he looked a very good striker. Sadly, other than a few pens and free kicks in the first division, he has looked nothing like he did in the early 2000's.

"Our hero".

We just know a good player when we see one. Nobody said anything about heroes.

You still continue to talk about "achieving" something. I'm sure you can give me a long list of Sheffield United players that have acheived anything.

You really do talk some proper shit don't you?

He makes it look effortless.

I am sure he will be waiting for news that BT has picked up a fresh injury and can't play.

Then he will tell us we should of got Gray in on loan instead.

Actually it is a fact that united got better results without BT that season. Darren and I debated this recently. The rest are actually 'FACTS' ;)

I agree the results were slightly better without him, and that is FACT..... however you said 'played' better without him.... FACT

We are talking about Hulse who came back too early from a career threatening injury. Hulse lead the line better than Beattie could have ever dreamt about.

Opinions opinions.
Beattie led the line well for me. Scored, got in dangerous positions, and worked hard (although some sections would have you believing otherwise).

Hulse, started well, came back and did nothing, his goals to games ratio since leaving has hardly been inspriing either...

But then again, the same could be said about Beattie.
