Do we need a shooting coach?

If we have a goalkeeping coach, defensive coach etc, is it time we had someone to teach our players when and how to shoot?
Yesterday we had numerous good attacking moves ending with Chuckle Brother (me to you,you to me) passes that fizzled out without a serious shot on goal. That makes it easy for opponents to play against, both defensively and on the counter attack with so many of our players queuing up to receive the next pass.
This is an area that goalkeeping coaches could help by explaining what are the best ways to beat a keeper from their experience.

Chesterfield seem to have mastered the art of scoring recently. They must have better coaches than us

Conor Sammon needs to be taught that it's better to actually shoot rather than to bizarrely chip the ball about twenty feet up in the air till it loops down gently into the keeper's hands o_O

If we do have a defensive coach then he wants sacking.
 
Surely the only shooting coach you need (for the basics) is your first PE teacher at school, "body over the ball to keep it low, lean back to kick it high lad!"

Apart from that, what is needed is confidence to take the shot early. By the time we had passed it around six players, and finally got it to someone who wanted to shoot, the opposition had packed six players into the box.
 
As others have alluded to, it's not that our shooting is bad, it's that we refuse to shoot!

Now is this down to confidence? You'd think not after our recent upturn in form.

There HAS to be a reason why we refuse to shoot until we 3 yards out from goal.

The Kop just needs to remind them were the goal is by shouting Shooooot! Every time we get the ball anywhere near the 18 yard line.

The Blades are the 5th highest scores in the league, but only have a +1 goal difference, that's where the trouble lies. I feel the Blades are not doing too bad on the goal front when you consider that Sharp is our only striker, Sammon is so poor he does not count. But when you look at the Blades play what you see is the forwards get hardly any support from anybody, there is no wing play, no through balls, just no creative attacking play at all. The forwards chase and chase and chase, looking for any scraps that the opposition give them. So far this season in all games we have scored 1 goal or less 14 times. We need to find the way we played against Bradford City every week, not just once in a blue moon. I feel no matter what coaches you hire the reality is the players we have are just not good enough for our league 1 status. This is a very sad reflection on what was a fantastic club many years ago on the playing field. Yet I still believe that we can make the playoffs this season with some good luck and one thing for sure the unbelievable support that the club gets it is truly Second to none.
 
I personally think having separate coaches for different positions on the field has always been a load of bollocks (jobs for the boys).
If you want them to play and think as a team, they should be coached as a team.
 
I was suggesting a shooting coach with tongue-in-cheek. The post was to highlight that the players yesterday preferred to pass the ball and duck the responsibility of shooting rather than having a go, with the exception of Billy. Matt and Sparky, who were unable to play for us for different reasons yesterday, were confident enough to shoot and being our top goalscorers last season. This was not a coincidence.

I agree about our tactics and the haphazard we play the game. Take Billy for example, Where ever he has played he was alway at his best as the classic "fox in the box" striker. But unfortunately in this team he has to go and find the ball himself, often dropping into midfield or chasing down the wing. He gets virtually no service at all.
 
I think the shots at goal isn't the problem, 17 yesterday, it's actually making the goalkeeper make a save, only six on target. Edwards continually says get the ball on target and anything can happen, striking it high and wide invariably doesn't. We are not prolific by any means, but we should be winning more games, we know where the problem is and until that is resolved we will get these setbacks, Interesting to hear NA say they had talked about Peterborough liking a strike from distance, obviously the players didn't listen.

Isn't Brian Deane working with the academy?

all the calendar years goals including porter and higdons too
out of 92 clubs to come top is still good

strange how chesterfield only got 31 points from 24 home games despite 41 home goals
 
I wish that was all we need :rolleyes:

The first thing I would do is explain to our defence and midfield that we'll keep getting beaten from 25/30 yards if we give them the freedom of our half to shoot.
 
It is obvious what is happening here; in training the midfield and attackers are told to pass the ball to death and not shoot, so our defenders are highly trained in defending this and are not expecting the shot or a dribble. If we encourage shooting from outside the area in training then this will benefit both our attack and defence.:rolleyes:
 
All of our forwards and midfielders that started the last game are in their late 20's or older.
It's too late to try and improve them via coaching!

I think we should shoot our defensive coach as its obviously not working

They've probably worked out that taking shots on from 25 yards is such a low percentage play that it is better not to do so. Only good things that can happen are:

- player taking the shot scores the goal of the season
- it is deflected for a corner which we can then waste
- keeper spills one right into the path of Billy who's reacted quicker than the defenders and stayed inside

That's about it. By waiting, you can either:

- draw a foul in the build up
- draw a penalty once you get it into the box
- gain a much higher percentage chance that offsets you getting less of them

Someone showed me a map of all of an England international midfielder's shots for one season, and the expected results - he took more than 50 from outside the box, of which he would expect to score less than two, and only scored one - from a free kick
