Derby and United seem to be moving in parallel universes these past few years, sacking and appointing managers almost in unison.

Clement was appointed on 1st June and Adkins on 2nd June. Before them Clough and McClaren were appointed and sacked in close order.

Anyway the point of this OP is to observe how differently the two managers have started their new jobs. Clearly they are operating at different levels with different financials but both are new to each club and both have inherited squads which lost in the play-offs at the end of last season. Both clubs are already amongst the favourites for promotion next season.

By yesterday Clement had signed four new players: Bent, Carson, Weimman and Baird.

Adkins has signed none.

There are various ways of skinning a cat and none is right or wrong. Neither manager has had chance to work with their players or assess strengths and weaknesses, indeed Clement has worked abroad in recent times. Both clubs had similar activity with their retained lists prior to the appointments.

No matter how the managers go about the job it's important the squad which starts the new season has built up their teamwork and understandings to compete for points from the very first game. I respect Adkins' comment that he intends to give each player the opportunity for a fresh start and an equal chance. On the other hand we do need certain positions sorted in time for the friendlies. There's no doubt that continuity is interrupted on the change of manager and Adkins has to hit the ground running to some extent. However " act in haste repent in leisure" as they say and budgets can only be spent once.

Derby don't have an over bloated squad like we do, we may have to sell or get rid of a few more yet before we can start bringing new players in.

Woody , i suppose the parallel is made due to the Clough connection.

That really were it ends.

From a management perspective , i do feel it is irrelevant on the number of players any club has signed , in comparison to the blades , especially a team in a different league . Its not apples against apples.

What i would say is that out of the 2no managers , we have got the best deal . Although Paul Clement has got a fantastic CV as a coach , we all know from experience , coaches don't always make good managers . Also Clement as brought in John Peacock , England U17 coach as his assistant , so IMO the management team at Derby do lack experience of the championship for automatic promotion. On the other hand we are winners on all fronts with Adkins and Wilkins . Also John Peacock is ex Scunthorpe , so if he was any good , would Adkins have had him under his wings, at any time .

You can buy in as many players you want , but the name of the game is getting them to gel as a unit . Adkins will already , i am sure , targeted the players he wants to bring in , at the right price , age , experience and quality. They may not be the ones to set the world alight , but they will be the right ones for SUFC. Pre season games will , i am sure , having them all working together.

As you say act in haste , repent in leisure , or even worst , don't act at all , or when its too late in the JTW. This mistake will not happen again at the lane . Even Adkins will have learnt from the Clough mistakes.

Derby have effectively appointed what could be a more glamourous David Weir or more specific Brian Kidd. We've appointed someone with the required experience... I know which team i'd be more trusting over during pre-season matters.

so derbys signed 4 already ,tell me who was Bent with later half of last season
2 more free transfers
only Weimann really cost money and hes shit , no wonder Villas dumped him

Ad kins thank fuck isnt rushing it and buying garbage to satisfy people with no idea how football works
Adkins will assess what we have in the frst fortnight in July , calmly , dump those deemed inadequate then will look to bring in players BETTER than what we have

not like Derby players thats been on loan or are cheap

Yeah... Fuck me I wish we had rushed in and signed Darren Bloody Bent

...McCabe...out???

That would cause a knock on effect where Derby (who are clearly just copying us) would sack their chairman. What people don't know is that on the same day the Prince came to BDTBL, Derby too were purchased by Mustapha Million who is going to save them.

On the same theme of summer transfer activity, let me try to improve the thread:

When the fixtures were announced the other day Adkins pointedly remarked that our last fixture was against Scunny who "had made a number of good new signings already and would be in the mix at the end of the season". It was notable that we had been linked with Lee Turnbull, Scunny Head Scout only days previously.

Looking at Scunny's 5 new signings might be of interest ( I hope so!) partly re Turnbull's recruits and partly because Scunny may be a threat next season, maybe even have a bet!

Charlie Goode from Hendon, 19 year old full back ex- England C.
Stephen Dawson, Rochdale midfield 36 apps fpr Dale last season and offered new deal there.
Scott Laird defender form Preston 27. 42 apps for Preston last season and offered new deal
Scott Wiseman midfield 29 from Preston 35 apps.
Jack King Preston 28 apps

Looks like Scunny mean business. Robins is a good manager too.

Scunny 7/1 for promotion. 35/1 champions.

 One of villas better players last season, dodgy transfer imo

Back to the theme re transfers this summer:

League 1 clubs:

Vale 3, Millwall 2, Fleetwood 5, Shrews 7, Burton 2, Gills 3, Bpool 4, Wyc 2, Posh 2, Wigan 2, Scunny 5, Bury 3, Donny 2, Dale 3, Chfld 2, Barnsley 2, Colchstr 2, Oldham 3, 6 clubs zero.

Why are you on here at 10.30 pm then? Want to talk "away kit" or "pints drunk before a game" instead?:)

Woody, there are lots of Blades who are totally underwhelmed by our abilities in buying players. We cannot use the 'quantity of signings' argument as a measure of how well we will perform this season.

You've supported the Blades for many years, look back over the hundreds of players we have signed and think how many have played a major significant part in changing the fortunes of our club for the better.

I would imagine there have been far more disappointments than successes,

With an active thread about Joe Shaw, another about the young Kler Heh and in addition your user name may give a clue to the where our long term success lies.

What I'm doing on this thread is trying to paint a bit of a picture and context of where our new manager is at this moment in time. It's rather idle chat at a quiet time of the year but maybe relevant in the circumstance our manager has to work having been appointed when he was.

Other clubs are well on with their recruitment and I think it's interesting to observe what Scunny, Shrewsbury, Fleetwood etc are up to. The new Derby manager has immediately signed loads of new players already even though he was appointed the same time as Adkins and that's a different approach but perhaps it's the club making signings not the new manager, hey are on the point of signing Ince too.

Our own lack of activity is entirely understandable given the circumstances but it can't be said to be helpful when we need key players and also need to be up and running when the season starts. In actual fact we need fewer players than we did last summer but we do need key players in vital positions, i.e. the "spine" of the team.

It's always fascinating to watch a new manager set about his duties and Adkins will identify his priorities before long. Clough took over mid-season and had game time to judge his players which he did, had a clearout and was quickly into the market when his first season ended.. Adkins has to create opportunities to judge his players very quickly.

I'm sorry that a number of colourful posters on here find it all so tedious of course. Maybe it is, but it's occupying my mind so I share it!! Live and let live I say. Thanks for taking the time to comment by the way.
