This is how the conversation went:

So you were defending someone's "negative rubbish" (selling for £50k).

But well done you on your attempt at measured debate. It's clear you gave it your best shot this time.

The point i think hes trying to make is that the best young talents are sold & then inferior replacements brought in from outside, on larger wages & contracts.
It kind of defeats the object of having a youth team if the best players are all sold on.

Does it matter that we havent sold Diego yet? we know that if he proves himself in our first team, then he will be sold.

There are very few players that I can think of that haven't. There are probably only about 5 clubs in the country that can keep hold of their youngsters if they prove themselves to be a cut above.

Agreed. Its very hard to keep hold of the youngsters if they are outstanding. But we shouldnt sell them at the first oppurtunity. If they do well then we will get an even higher fee for them, if not then so be it. Its not like we are spending alot of our budget on their wages.

Did anyone see the retweets he did yesterday saying he would be getting a big move soon. Hope we've got him on pro terms

The likelihood is that if the player is any good a prem club will snap him up for a small compensatory fee without even having to consult us
They wouldn't be breaking any laws thanks to scudamore and his premier league chums . Football league clubs were told to agree to these conditions or lose millions in tv money every year

It was quiet well publicised last season when it happened

I personally expect him to be sold if he's as talented as we hope. We can't expect to hold a player back from a higher level if he doesnt want to stay or if the club can use the money better.

But I hope we see some benefit from him before he goes...like with lowton and jags

Not if they're on pro terms though...

What I particularly like is that we can have a player since he was just a little kid, know all about him, his talents and who are watching him... but as soon as fans hear his name years later and that he might be good they are convinced we'll do everything we can to offload at the very earliest available opportunity.

The lads already had chance to go elsewhere, he's still here. If he fulfills his potential, there will be absolutely no stopping him going to a big club... we should enjoy these players while we have them and do what we can to strive to be successful enough to keep them.

Then if he is good enough,he should be in OUR starting 11,not benchwarming.
But who would you drop for him to replace?.That is the question.

As usual somewhere in between the two squabbling hoards lies the truth. Fact is we generally aren't as good as others at hanging onto talent and you do always get the feeling we get our pants pulled down on most occasions. However how easy can it be to hold onto good players when the Premiership clubs can stick a derisory figure on the table and you end up with an unhappy player if you say no. Chances are you have an agent in his ear telling him he can get 10k per week just for being in the reserves and I'm sorry as a 19 year old (or whatever age you may be) its only human to have your head turned.

So, we don't help ourselves perhaps but the single biggest factor is that for both club and player money talks. If Premiership clubs weren't allowed to do this then you would have a different issue. To try and be fair to the club I am not sure they often have much choice.

They sure have a choice whether or not to blood him in the first team though. Let's at least get something out of him first.

Another key factor is, the people in charge of placing him in the first team, see him a hell of a lot more than the people demanding it.

Yes, and he's an age group international and yet not good enough for the English 3rd tier? Hmmm.
Age group being U18 and him being 17 you mean?

Not saying that he shouldn't be getting blooded but he's still a young lad so just because he's an U18 international he might be a way off being physically ready for getting lumps kicked out of him week in week out

I said this way when the hype machine first started.
Everyone needs to calm down and just let the lad develop and play, all this fuss is likely to hurt his development and judging by the stick given to Long when he does get into the first team regularly he's going to get hammered.
Thankfully he's got a strong family and friends behind him, but the hype is getting out of hand, especially when it encourages some of the comments from Blades Mad about his mother.
Pathetic.

There's another kid in the academy who's gone under the radar so far, probably because he's a bit younger, but the same will happen to him once he's noticed by some.

Just because Rooney got blooded by Everton at 15 or whatever, Giggs at 17, some others at Palace at 15/16 doesn't mean that we should blood every promising young teen.... Diego had his taste in the reserves cup, but it was probably to see how his character reacted rather than how his talent could be showcased.

He'll need to be grounded again this week after an apparent mom display for the Italian U18's.

In all honesty swiss,i think its worth taking a gamble on this lad,he seems to have `the silver spoon`laced to his boots.
