Diego off

I haven't seen this included but I haven't read all this largely stupid, bigoted, shit that hates every young player at the club.

"York brought me in and gave me a chance. Russ Wilcox has been brilliant with me.

At Sheffield United I felt that no matter how many times I was told they were going to give me a chance, there was no way I was going to get it. I had to decide to leave the club at the end of the season."

As I said before.
He signed his last contract - after they said he could leave! - on the basis he would get more games here than such as the Manchester clubs.

Fool me once shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
s
Any fair minded person can see he had to leave.
Like so many others :(
i thought weve all agreed cloughy and his staff know best as they are professionals and cloughy,s record bringing young players through is excellent. He can make mistakes we all do so we will have to wait and see but my moneys on cloughy, doing it the right way,

I don't get people saying he's not been played in his position when he has played for the first team, I don't hear Flynn, Murphy, Baxter or Basham complaining about not playing in their "preferred" postions. I've never seen him pay but if he has got talent/skills, as people suggest, then he surely should be able to play other positions such as left wing??

What I don't quite get is, if he's as good as some people have made out, why is he still here. Surely he'd have been hoovered up by a Prem team before he got injured? They seem to like stockpiling talent, didn't Mellis go to Chelsea at 16. I've not heard anything about him turning down moves previously.

We have an aim and realistic hope of playing second tier football next season. We are the club that have seen most of what Diego can do, and we wanted him to stay. Clearly our management believed he's got the potential to play at least at that level, hence our contract offer.

Not neccessarily Bergs, we have to offer a contract in order to be due compensation if he leaves before he's 24. Could just be United protecting their investment.

Indeed. You're 19, desperately wanting a career in pro football. Your manager thinks you should play in position X, even though you think you best position is position Y. Surely any sensible young man would do his damnest in the position the manager wants him to play in, not moan about being played out of position.

Are you really comparing Diego with a seasoned professional Matt Done who, on entering our team was already one of the divisions leading scorers ?. Don't all footballers want to play football ?. Wasn't long ago. that most of us were crying out for Diego to be brought into the team, praying for his quick recovery, now he wants to leave he is a hate figure. It does appear to me that he is not going to be given any reasonable type of chance here, although his appearances haven't exactly set the world alight, I couldn't see why he wasn't worth at least a place on the bench more regularly. For those who think he is some kind of glory hunter with a big ego, I believe he will not have his head turned by the Sunderland/Juventus rubbish, and expect to see him sign permanent for York in an effort to establish himself.

Your point about Diego becoming a hate figure, not for myself I should add. I wish the fella well. I hope that at some future point he's capable enough to reflect and understand that advice has two sides. There are good agents, and then there are agents whose pockets are lined with the coin of young players too dense to grasp the machiavellian behaviour of someone who's your best friend today, and tomorrow, well tomorrow he'll not return your phone calls

As for comparing Diego with Done, if you're knocking on that first team door it's fair that expectations should have begun in earnest. There are young players who outperform seasoned professionals all the time, so why it's wrong to suggest that one player has come to a club where he knows no one else, the style of play is alien to him, yet manages to impose himself, against a player who has been schooled in the way United wish him to play, with years of guidance and repeated messages supporting his development, then yes, guilty of wanting Diego to show what he's capable of. It's not that he's played woefully, but that special something that is meant to mark him out, well perhaps it's awol. If Diego does go on to play against the elite of the elite then I'll be pleased for the guy. In footballing terms you don't remain a lad for too long, so I guess Diego's moment in the departure lounge of youth will quickly pass, and then everyone, amateurs and professionals alike, will be able to assess just how good he is.

As I wrote, if we'd had a 16-year-old Norwegian being chased by Real Madrid, conversations of this type would be redundant. As things stand, we have a young man who's decided to leave United. Again, I'll repeat, I wish Diego all the best. So no messages of hate or anything else so banal.

I don't dislike Diego. He is a talent. I think he's a fool though, and his advisers bigger fools. Why he chooses to distance himself from Nigel Clough who could undoubtedly help him to be a better player, I simply can't imagine.

Diego: "I only want to play football."

Nigel: "Excellent. I was a decent player and in much the same position as you. I can help. You've got talent but you still have a great deal to learn. Of course you can play football. You'll be first name on the teamsheet in the U-21s and I'll send you to Division Two so you can test yourself against grown-ups as well. Just the job."

Diego. "No, I want to play for the United first team, right now and every game and in the position I choose. My dad says it should be in my contract."

Nigel: "Ah, you want to replace the management team of Me, Garns and Morgs with you, your dad and your agent? Sorry young man, my dad knew a great deal more about football than yours ever will."

We now have more than one example of mere kids who should thank Pele every night that they are lucky enough to play professional football for a great club, but instead choose to (or people close to them do) whinge and moan like spoiled brats that they are "hard done by". Sadly there are a small minority of Boy Band Groupies within the fanbase who encourage them in this absurd attitude. It reminds one of the Sunday U-14 League with deluded parents squabbling with the coach as to young Johnny or Francesco not being 'given a chance'. It is fucking ridiculous and needs to stop.

Neither SUFC nor NC have done anything wrong at all here. The attempts by Diego and his sycophants to suggest otherwise are risible. A football club needs strong and decisive management. We have it in the shape of NC. I rather prefer it to a Parents Selection Committee, don't you?.....

.....Oh, hello Mr. Done, yes of course he's playing on Saturday.....

All very good, but can we stop this ridiculous notion of calling the 4th Division "Division Two"!!!!

Fans of a 4th Division team think he is good. No surprises there.

Exactly, they see a lot of 4th division players so they have a benchmark to compare to.
So I suggest you take the time to ACTUALLY read what they say.

Indeed. I agree they are a good judge of 4th division players.

I did read what they say. Some thought he was only good enough to be on their bench.

A few comments about not changing a winnig side is hardly evidence of them saying he isn't good enough,

Many more after a few games (with a new club, new team-mate).saw that he is far too good for that league and to enjoy him whilst he's here.

I really don't understand the decrying of his talents he gets from certain folks on the board.
Even when the evidence of folks who have actually seen him play is so utterly overwhelming.

I'll leave it there Darren, as I know you like to have the last word.

Shame you wouldn't let everyone have your hundred to one bet , I was hoping to crowd fund it :)

ALL York fans again 100% positive on him returning..
Some were completely ecstatic!

If all you've had to eat for the past few years is Aldi dog food then you're going to be ecstatic when the wife brings a tin of corned beef home. If however you've had some nice sausages, some lovely home made burgers, a few lamb chops, maybe even the odd steak then you're not going to be too chuffed when the Mrs serves up a Winalot pie.

Yes, I suppose if we signed Messi we would stick him on the bench so as not to change a winning team....

The "overwhelming evidence" is that fans of a 4th division side, by and large, think he is a good signing for them. There is no evidence from anyone higher up the ladder who thinks he is any good. That;s not "decrying of his talents", it's a judgment of how good he actually is, based on objective evidence.

It summed it up for me when in a interview he said that Nigel had asked him to work on his defending game and get back more to help out, his response "thats not what I do"

Right then. I might try that tactic next time my boss asks me to do something.

Was unaware of that S5.....then Diego is going against the grain of many manager's view of what an attacking play must integrate into his game. Mourinho critiqued Hazard last season. Hazard was initially reticent to follow the knowledgeable one, but Jose was correct, and Hazard is now a far more complete player whose comprehension of the game is holistic. Hazard is a thrilling player, and now even more so. He see's what is possible from a deep position, whereas his previous stance couldn't contemplate anything other than the single vision of going forward from the halfway line.

Of course a player must be an integrated part of his team. To shirk his responsibilities is to demand a teammate add to his existing load. Hardly encouraging that the team works together, is it? Single-minded "I know best" individuals isolate themselves. They are almost terminally incapable of accepting advice designed to improve their game. Their choice of course, but at what point does it become apparent to them that they are missing a trick?

I love football and golf. I always wanted to play centre-forward for the Blades and be a stalwart of the Ryder Cup team.

.....and people wonder why I fucking despise John Harris and Tony Jacklin....

Sod this debate about the merits of some snotty teenage kick-a-ball-around-yobbo, let's have a real - 'DIEGO-OFF'!!!

Round 1:

Diego Maradona

vs

Diego Velázquez

One is a big fat ex footballer who could have signed for the Blades once don't you know? The other is the great artist of the Spanish Golden Age. Let's have your votes in the comments people!

It's interesting that people slate young players for leaving first team football to play in the reserves somewhere, and yet people also slate young players for leaving a club where they can't get in the first team to get crucial match experience somewhere else.

But that's not the reason he is leaving though is it? Because if it was then he would sign a contract with us and then go out on loan. He obviously thinks that he's good enough at the moment to get in our team and Nigel doesn't think he is. Simple. BTW I wish him all the best.

A mixture of Diego doesn't think Cloughy fancies him in footballing terms enough, other players moving past him in the pecking order and Diego maybe doesn't feel wanted by Clough unlike the rest of our youngsters. Like i've said in previous posts, Clough hasn't done anything wrong really and neither has Diego. Cloughy doesn't fancy him, otherwise he'd have played him more, that's down to Clough himself to decide. I will ultimately stick by this for the time being, but if Diego goes on to be the player i think he can be, then we could be losing out on either a very good player, or a fair wad of money when coming to selling him in the future. All i see at this moment in time is a player that wants to play football and he could've easily made a difference in the first half of our season imo.

Let me ask you or anyone else this question. Do you think that if he was playing for us now, do you reckon he would think twice about going to York? No, me neither and the contract would be signed.

Not signing Maradona did us no harm at all.
