There’s plenty on here that watched him more than me but when it came down to just ability the lad had huge individual flair but what was blatantly obvious to me was his inability to be a team player. Whether that’s down to him believing his own hype or he just didn’t have it in him only the experts know

Seeing him every single time he wore a first team shirt is all I ever judged him on. At best he was underwhelming, no matter how hard people try to big up his performance at Preston for example.

The serious injury was a tragedy for him, but we couldnt play him based on what ifs.

I watched him a few times at various levels and he certainly had something about him. As we all know though producing the goods at the academy and in the first team is totally different. His injury may have played a part but he is where he is for a variety of reasons.

Very much this ^^^

Saw him play a few times as a youngster and was genuinely excited at the prospect we had.

Saw every game he had in the first team bar one, and wasn't remotely impressed bar a couple of flashes. Dimaio impressed me far more in his appearances.

It's hypothetical how his injury has affected him but he's ultimately been a white elephant.

As much as I feel for any young player who doesn't go on, my personal experience of him tells me he was maybe above himself.

We move on. Ian Ross was more of a disappointing situation imho.
 
He's the most talented youth player we've ever produced, but he's an individual and not a team player. This is fine at youth level, but unless you're Messi it doesn't translate to senior level where management and instructions take precedence.

His injury couldn't have come at a worse time in his development and is lucky it didn't end his career. Also Clough's complete inability to manage him and play him correctly delayed his development. Diego always said he likes to play off a main striker or on the right wing, so of course Clough puts him on the left wing. The only time we played him off a main striker (Higdon), Diego scored and had a good game!

The hype during his very early years was justified but the lime light did him no favours. His development stalled, yes maybe down to his serious injury, but this is exactly what happens with youth. Some promise loads at a young age but their development then stalls or even stops altogether. Some don’t show that much early promise but then blossom as they gain experience. That’s youth players for you.
 
Anyone taking on any bets how long it is until he appears on the Macclesfield website having parted company with them. I’m betting he is gone in the summer and it is next stop Alfreton Town, that might be more his level.

To be fair Sean, did he ever reach double figures for first team appearances ?, but if you weren't impressed and a young lad failed to make an instant impact then clearly he was shit !. To be honest I don't know why I am even commenting on him now, the hatchet job on him has been done to death, seems he's hated as much as Hammond nowadays. Let's all rejoice in this lads fall from grace.

The knee injury came at a bad time for him but if people think that's the sole reason he is where he is, then they're deluding themselves.
 
The best explanation I heard about his fall from grace (shout up whoever said it) was that 'his attitude to rehab wasn't the best', or words to that effect.
This explains it all to me, I still perform sport to a decent level (top level age rated) but whenever I get a niggle or injury there are a hundred things I have better to do with my time than spending more than 10 minutes on rehab, I know it's not my job as it was his but still one of the most boring things ever.
 
He was obviously much better than his peers at every level until adult, first team football. Seems like when it got difficult and he hit some misfortune he didn't have the application to reset his career.

Not everyone with the ability to do something really well gives enough of a shit about it to put the time in.

This, I think, mirrors De Juve’s ‘Meanmidaftdadnobest’ attitude.

Nigel Clough, who knows a thing or two about ‘playing off the striker’, tried to turn him into a professional footballer. If you’re played ‘out of position’ you get on with it and give of your best for the team. You don’t bleat. It’s called ‘character’.
 



I'll happily bow to anyone who has first, second, etc hand experience of Diego's attitude & application. I haven't. I do watch an awful lot of SUFC & England Age Group football. Naturally, I have seen many players who were outstanding at their age group, but never got anywhere in the professional game.

Without that first, second, etc experience of his attitude, I take a benign view. Absolutely brilliant to watch him winning games singlehandedly, putting opponents on their arse, scoring for fun. But, as with many others, proved to be not good enough for high level professional football.
