I don't think Clough had a bad record at all when it comes to "giving opportunites to youngsters".
He signed Adams, K.Wallace and McGahey. Played Kennedy often when he was fit.
Gave debuts to Reed, Dimaio, Khan and Calvert-Lewin.
If anything, he played both McGahey (15 games) and Reed (19 games) too much in the league last season when we needed more experience.

I said the same when he was accused of not giving the youngsters a chance last season. As I said, unfairly criticised.

I was going to begin "I hate to say I told you so..." but that wouldn't be accurate. I don't.

I told you so.

....but we have a song about him. Nigel better sign a player with 8 syllables in his name else it's fucked.

In 3 seasons he's played 18 league games in the 4th division (4 goals) and 2 in the 3rd division (no goals). He hasn't played a league game for us since 2012-13.

Was there ever a player whose hype so massively outrun his actual achievements?

Based on those stats, he’s a significantly worse footballer than Barney

I wouldn’t say Clough didn’t give young players a chance. We’ve seen the list on this thread to show that he did. I think the reason that people blamed Clough was his record of falling out with players (Collins, Butler, JCR etc).

But now nasty negative nige has gone and nice positive nige is here and Diego still can’t get a sniff, that leads me to believe the player is the reason rather than the manager.

Maybe the gaffer hasn't heard how good the fans have made him?

Maybe Adkins did give him a chance preseason and at the start of the season.

Maybe he's picking up loads of niggle injuries and may never come back from the bad injury he had.

Quite sad if so as he was (or may still be) a very talented lad.

UTB.

He reminds me of Richard Lucas. The lad was utterly unplayable in the first few games he played but it just seemed to fizzle for him after that.

Ian Ross was another that loads & loads of high hopes were invested in, I remember. Last heard of slumming it with Boston United in the non-league nether regions.

Looking more and more like a bad decision to give him a 2 year deal in the summer. No doubt done to "protect" our investment.

All 30 bob of it !!

To be fair I bet we've invested a hefty chunk of money in the lad for absolutely no return.

I've been told that he is free to find a new club, wont be releasing him from his contract but will listen to any offers.

He was working making fire doors at Jeld Wen a few years back according to my lad.

I remember seeing him play a chunk of the 2nd half away at Tavistock on our Cornwall tour in 2004. This was at a time when he really should have been looking to impress – didn't do much of note to be honest. In fact he might have missed a penalty late-on (can't actually find any evidence of that, so might be poor memory).

Other notable appearances for us that day: Steve Howey, Noel Whelan, and surprise cameo goalscorer Tony Daley.

Remember John Reed starting to break into our team following relegation from the PL under Bassett and thinking he could go on to big things. Wasn't to be.

Yeah, he did miss a penalty, and Tony Daley was outstanding, he cut in down the left and curled one straight in to the top corner, he still looked every inch a professional footballer than night

Perhaps the board should have listened to the bloke they paid to know about such things, the one they'd just trusted to spend £5m +. Instead of sacking him.
Lol! Apparently he didn't know what he was doing, to paraphrase phippsy ;)
