I see we've signed up Diego De Girolamo on a proper contract.

Good to see that our scouting system worldwide has come up with the goods.

Oh, hang on -- I see he comes from Chesterfield!

Maybe we will now get more cash when the time comes to sell him :)

It's a good move. The lad is class.

Not seen him in action yet, but i've been hearing a few positive reports, and apparantly he turned down a whole load of top clubs to sign a pro deal with us.

So what is the verdict from those who have seen him, how good is he, how good does he have the potential to be, how far off a first team place is he, and is he the new Kyle Walker or new Ian Ross?

His own twitter says other clubs being after him is a load of bollocks made up by the Sun.

He's been at the Lane since he was 7 and will get the same sort of guidance from his parents as Harry got from his which is great news for SUFC.

As I've said elsewhere he is like no-one else at the club, he is a real talent that when developed will be a revelation to watch. Left footed attacking midfielder / striker. Beats people for fun, scores great goals from distance, good at dead balls. But he can be greedy ie he knows he's good.

He is only just 17 so I'm not sure we'll see him at first team level this season but I'm pretty sure he will come through. Exciting prospect.

Sounds exactly what we need right now.

If he's good enough, he's old enough. Sounds the exact type of player we need especially on the left!

I'm pretty sure that our resident Academy expert (DazBlade88) has said that Di Girolamo isn't a wide midfielder in the Wilson model: he's more of a mercurial just-behind-the-strikers midfielder who happens to be left footed. He's not the answer to our left wing problems - that, I think, will be Callum McFadzean in time; either as an attacking left back or an out and out winger.

Try him on Saturday in the first team. I for one wouldn't be upset if we lose

Never seems to be the case at the Lane.

So players like Mick Jones, Alan Birchenall, Len Badger, Bernard Shaw, Tony Currie to name a few from times gone by, or more recently Phil Jagielka, Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton, Matt Lowton, Harry McGuire, George Long were not good enough when they came through as younsters?

I also remember a certain Clive Mendonca (does the name ring a bell?) did prety well for us as mere kid and managed to play in the premiership for Charlton as I remember.

This is pretty much spot on (apart from me being an expert!).

I'm guessing that McFadzean is injured at the moment, which unfortunately seems to be have been a big problem for him over the last 18 months or so. When he gets fit I'd be amazed if he didn't get a run of games on the left wing for the first team given our current situation.

I give in.

I've sat staring at the thread title for 10 minutes and still cant work how to pronounce that surname.

I meant players younger than 18 - we seem to be taking quite a risk when we put an 18 y/o in, but other teams seem to blood them at 17 and even 16. Maybe their youngsters are more ready than ours ? :)

Its all part of the masterplan.

Wait until next year. Bring him in to spearhead our march through the championship Then he's less likely to leave a side just promoted to the premiership and with The New Maradona up front we'll be in the champs league by 2016.

the direct translation of the name is james gerome , to be pedantic diego is spanish for saint james and geralamo is derived from heronimus, the original pizza hut inventor

Get him straight in squads for FA Cup and JPT. If he's that good, get him involved straight away and see how he fits in around first team scene. 15 mins at the end aint gonna hurt IMO.

What you describe sounds like the ideal replacement for Stephen Quinn!
