Woody's two long range goals were memorable despite that we lost 3-2 in December 1975

We lost 2-1 in October 1972. McAlister saved two penalties from Alan Hinton (the second one isnt shown in this clipping

Lost 3-0 in November 1971

I went to both those games never did have any luck at the Baseball Ground
It was good to those 2 quality strikes from Woodward again

I went to all three! I missed Woody's first goal cos I was late for the match. There was another drama that I had missed. McAlister saved a penalty from Charlie George in the opening minutes

Hated that Baseball ground.......... and Derby.
The fo okers used to drop things down on yer from the top stand................ funny they always vanished outside the ground....saw all them games.

yep we never got a result there in those days............ a reight dump, every house nearby had boards up at the windows they were fookers for lobbing bricks over the houses from the next street.

Surely it is not 40 plus years!
Only seems like a few years ago.

I can't remember us being so rubbish in defence then ... that defending was dire!

And I didn't realise referees were so incompetent then either!

Here is a better and longer footage of our 2-1 defeat in October 1972 (this one includes McAlister's 2nd penalty save). The penalty decisions were very poor and I now understand why my dad was furious with the ref that day! Wonder who did TC aim his V sign to, after scoring his goal?

S.B Any footage of any home wins remember us beating them 3-0 my first time on kop and can be seen right in corner [standing on railings] them were days.

I've often recalled that own goal which Garner chested in. It was one of the worst pieces of defending I've

seen and it occurred in what turned out to be a dreadful season for us after starting in such hope after the previous

season and the opening of the new South Stand.

Sorry SB IT WAS v Coventry we won 3-1 in 72-73 season i think still only a chabby at the time
Both the home games against Coventry in April 1973 (won 3-1, Coop o.g, Bone and Dearden the scorers) and Derby in Nov 1973 (won 3-0, Flynn, Woody and Colquhoun) had highlights on YTV in the next day. I am hoping that the person who downloads Derby matches on you tube will one day download our 3-0 win

I remember the October 1972 game like it was yesterday. In an interview afterwards about the double save, Tom Mc said he'd watched Hinton the previous season stick his penalties each way, guessed right on the first one and selected right on the second one.

What superb days.

The 3-0 defeat was my last game before joining the RAF as a 17 year old. Memories eh ?

Nice footage but such shocking defending! Monty's fault...

Thanks SB your a gentleman, looked on Y.T.V for those highlights and was that site which muddeled me up as they only had highlights of Coventry game. May have been a different regions T.V Coverage. Defo at County game now though.Thank you for your time.D.

The derby pitch was a right mess, good days and we still never won owt, but it was worth going for the craic.

I have the YTV video with those games (and many others on). If any of you techie types can help me get that on to you tube, you can have a loan of the video.

If memory serves, United did not win there between 1947 and 1995 (when we won 3-2 on my only visit).

Someone has put Derby highlights on youtube with local radio commentary superimposed over the top: a few of the games are against us. One of them is when we lost 1-0 at home late in 1986-7 when Derby won division 2: Phil Gee got the winner, thanks to a bad mistake by Stancliffe which I had completely forgotten about. Someone with better skillz should link it and the others.

Here it is

I was at that game and think it is the only game at the Lane where away support outnumbered the home support. There were 19,000 there and at least 10,000 were from Derby as this was a vital game for their promotion challenge.

I also found this

Our 0-2 defeat v Middlesbrough at the Lane in the hopeless 87-88 season. Note the typical assured goalkeeping display from Andy Leaning.

Derby brought even more to the cup game the season before, and though the attendance was higher (22,000ish), I reckon they also outnumbered us that day. That's the biggest away following I've ever seen at the Lane.

The only team who's brought many more than away end capacity since seats came in was Burnley in the cup in 1992-3, who asked for, and were given, extra seating in the South Stand after selling out the away end.

Ah yes, I was at the cup game as well. The only lasting memory I have of it is that it featured what would have been Ray Lewington's only goal for United, which was ruled out (probably wrongly if I remember rightly) on some ground or other.

I remember the disallowed goal and Rob Hindmarch's winner, scored at the kop end in the first half. That was the beginning of the end for Porterfield.

If my increasingly dodgy memory serves, there had been serious grumbles before that. The 2 laboured wins over relegation threatened Fulham and Carlise over the Xmas/new year period had involved the strange spectacle of calls for the manager's head even when the team won.

I always though Porterfield had an incrediby raw deal. He had taken United from the 4th division to second division promotion challengers in 4 and a bit seasons, yet ended up getting sacked.

Thanks Silent for those 1970s videos. I was living abroad at the time so it's all new to me.

How old-fashioned the players look without adverts and names on their shirts!

Yes, both very poor performances, and we were booed off after both games despite victory.

I had thought that our form dipped after the cup defeat, but checking back this is not wehat happened. We got 10 points from the next 5 games, before Porterfield was fired after the Norwich hammering.

As he said at the time, the team had improved its league position every season under him.

I always think that Porterfield and Blackwell have something in common: if you know nothing about the performances and just go by the results, it is not easy to see why either was fired. History may treat them more kindly than those who remember them do.

That Norwich game was a strange one. We were 3-1 down and Edwards pulled one back with about 5-10 mins left, to give us hope of a point. As we were puhsing forward Norwich got 2 on the break in the last couple of mins to give the score un unrealistic "hammering" look.

But, as you say, 10 points from the previous 5 games prior to that was hardly sacking form (though I do remember booing after we scraped a late point against Grimbsy the week before the Norwich game).

Indeed, the Baseball Ground was a disaster area for many years. When Deano headed a late equaliser to get our first point back in the top flight in 90 that was the first time in NINE visits that I hadn't seen us lose. That's by far my worst run on any ground.

Exactly my thoughts.

Porterfield had lost the plot and seemed to be hell bent on destroying any relationship he had built up with the fans. His treatment of Edwards in that last season was unbelievable.
On the face of it he has a great record but it was time to go.

On the other hand Hoofy has all the negative aspects without the two promotions to back his case up.
