There’s been 76 meeting between us and Portsmouth with the blades recording the most win with 39, we’ve lost 27 and drawn 10.
There’s been a few big scorelines over the years in the 1969/70 season we won them 5-1 away from home and 5-0 at Bramall Lane, interestingly for me we played both these division 2 games away and then at home on the 16th of August and the 7th of October. You see fixtures this close together nowadays between December and February but not so early in the season. The following season 70/71 we beat them 5-1 at their place again so in three games against pompey we scored 15 goals with 10 of the goals coming away from home.
Between 1947 and 1955 we had scorelines of 6-0 and 6-2 wins for Portsmouth and 4-3 and 5-2 win for Sheffield United.
In 2002 we had a seven goal thriller with a 4-3 victory at the lane. 17,553 was the attendance, it goes to show how far we’ve come with our gates.
The goals came from Monty,Carl Asaba and Paul Furlong with two one of which was a last minute penalty in which former blade Shaun Derry was sent off.
This is our first game against them in 11 years that’s the longest both clubs have gone without playing each other by the way.
