Inspired by other threads regarding crap loans, I have put together some decent ones (IMO):
1. Bruce Rioch
Came in during the back end of 78-79 from Derby as we attempted to avoid relegation to D3 for the first time. Only played 8 games but 4 of them were good wins out of only 11 wins in the entire season. If he had stayed for the last 4 games I am sure we would have stayed up, but not to be.
2. Andy Reid
What a good player he was but there was never a chance of keeping him. If we had we would not have gone down. Spent most of his career at massive, self-important Nottingham Forest - what a waste of talent.
3. Matt Phillips
Like Reid another good player with no chance of anything long term. Wilson did well to get him in the first place. He kick-started our D3 promotion campaign with some great goals and assists. Gets slagged on QPR boards and needs to move on, back here ideally.
4. Connor Coady
Haven’t spoken to anyone who was 100% convinced but played a part in last season’s revival and cup run with some important goals and assists. Definitely worth a punt at £375k, especially with the Maguire sale income coming in. I shall watch his career development with great interest.
5. Bruce Dyer, Neil Collins, Darren Bullock
I have grouped these 3 together in that they all came in on short loans and played a blinder at Swillsborough. None of them had a long term future at the Lane at that time although Collins was signed further on down the line based on that performance.
