Inspired by other threads regarding crap loans, I have put together some decent ones (IMO):
1. Bruce Rioch

Came in during the back end of 78-79 from Derby as we attempted to avoid relegation to D3 for the first time. Only played 8 games but 4 of them were good wins out of only 11 wins in the entire season. If he had stayed for the last 4 games I am sure we would have stayed up, but not to be.

2. Andy Reid
What a good player he was but there was never a chance of keeping him. If we had we would not have gone down. Spent most of his career at massive, self-important Nottingham Forest - what a waste of talent.

3. Matt Phillips
Like Reid another good player with no chance of anything long term. Wilson did well to get him in the first place. He kick-started our D3 promotion campaign with some great goals and assists. Gets slagged on QPR boards and needs to move on, back here ideally.

4. Connor Coady
Haven’t spoken to anyone who was 100% convinced but played a part in last season’s revival and cup run with some important goals and assists. Definitely worth a punt at £375k, especially with the Maguire sale income coming in. I shall watch his career development with great interest.

5. Bruce Dyer, Neil Collins, Darren Bullock
I have grouped these 3 together in that they all came in on short loans and played a blinder at Swillsborough. None of them had a long term future at the Lane at that time although Collins was signed further on down the line based on that performance.

I was. I'm even more convinced having seen us "cope" without him.

On the original subject, both Mark Dempsey and Tom Heffernan were fine on loan and not very good when signed for real.

Thought Dennis Mortimer did a grand job when we loaned him from Villa. Got Rodger Wylde sent off at the Lane as a bonus.

Scott Marshall, Jon Harley, Des Hamilton, Gary Cahill, Nathan Dyer, The Beard.

Tin hat time ,but Steve Simonsen ,his twin brother on loan was excellent ,then he signed.

Ian Rush

ooops wrong thread!

I cannot believe you didn't put Sir John Brayford in,that's a school boy error.

Rioch wasn't a "decent" loan, for me. Gave off a vaguely disinterested air, as if it was all a bit beneath him. I remember an away game at Blackburn when he stood out wide on the right wing all the game and gave the strong impression he didn't care as much as us on the terraces.

I was at the Blackburn game too, we were awful and Rioch was the worst of the lot. We had just beaten high riding West Ham 3-0 but lost at bottom of the table Blackburn! Strange season (we got the double over Newcastle but Blackburn got the double over us). Remember John Aston scoring the first goal for Blackburn
