Dean Saunders on Brian Clough...

Love hearing the Brian Clough stories as many are so amazing and eccentric.

I once heard a John McGovern interview in Radio Sheffield many years ago and he said that Clough was a master at psychology and has amazing charisma but he rarely talked tactics. He used to say things like "You know Messi at Barcelona, he's overrated and they aren't that good. Trust me when we go to the Nou Camp if you simply concentrate on your game then you won't lose".
McGovern said he could say almost anything and he was so believable giving you confidence.

I remember the quote when Forest bought Gary Megson (I think from Everton).
Forest paid a lot of money for him but after few weeks Clough was quoted as saying
"I never realised how poor he is. He's that bad he'd struggle to trap a bag of cement" and he never played 1 game for Forest.

It's ironic that the nearest we've had to a Clough personality in recent years is Paulo Di Canio
And he didn't last 5 minutes at Sunderland and their players wouldn't accept being treat like children.

I suppose although Clough was an eccentric (verging on mad) he could get away with it because he had such a fantastic track record. He could be a bit of a bully and had total control over his players otherwise they were out of the door.

Bloke tells an amusing story and as is the way in the day and age we live in the PC brigade are all over it.

FFS clough was an alky so what?

The thing is this day and age people just can't take stuff at face value and are always looking for things to be offended by.

I'm minded to quote Stephen Fry

"It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

So don't make stuff up about someone that offends?
What is wrong with not offending people?

There are legions of amusing stories about Clough that are based on the fact he was a bit of an eccentric, tell one of those. Don't go out of your way to disparage someone with an illness.

How do you know it was made up?

Fuck that . Bit of economical with the truth and after dinner speech license in there .

No PC shit flying around IMO

Nowt to do with Stephen Fry comment who also has a illness . His bipolar depression . Clough aloholism.

I do respect you opinion even though it's off the mark :)

I found it funny, it was an elaborate anecdote told with humour in mind.
