David McGoildrick

We have to remember, he was a free from Ipswich. If he was better than he is, he wouldn’t be in the championship.

A very tidy footballer, yes his finishing is poor, but that’s why Sharp has to play! I don’t mind him at all - I also wish we had a replacement to change it up when he’s off it.

McG - Great for nothing, there are players in this league who cost £1m+ that aren't as good. He's a great link up player and is intelligent on the ball. IMO he's far more effective playing behind the front two. Given that Duffy is / can be great for 50-70 minutes he'd be better suited to sharing the Duffy role with Sharp and Washington / Clarke upfront.

McGoldrick needs replacing in January, so does Washington. We need 2 quality strikers, hopw Wilder gets the money.

Fully involved in first goal.

Fantastic finish and marginally offside when he scored

Worked hard.

Thats him off to a tee though.
When he got ahead of the ball into an offside position it meant he had to do the elaborate, and scored.

If he'd kept himself onside and had to slide to make contact with the ball from half a yard further away he'd have missed it or hit the goalie with it
Finishing isn't his thing unfortunately

His finishing's the only problem.

As ridiculous as it seems, we could have won about 6 in a row had he taken simple chances.

Spot on there Herbie. And that's exactly why we all know he's one of the two players we simply have to replace with significantly better come January .

Title is wank. With just a little thought you could have entitled it "David McGoaldrought".
1/10. Must try harder.

If we don't get a Duffy type in the JTW I'd be moulding McG into one and giving the striker spot to Clarke or Washington (or whoever we get in the JTW if they're decent/exist).

He's got a great brain, good link up but his finishing is that of an attacking mid, you don't mind that Duffy misses a few, if he gets 8 goals in a season it's great because scoring isn't his entire job.

When you're up top, you need to be putting the chances he's getting away more than he does. His heading is also an issue because he's not winning them, so we get less opportunity compared to Leon who can head them down to others or take them down and hold it up.

He can play the Duffy role, he's pretty good at it, better than anyone else other than Duffy at the moment.

Doesn't score, doesn't assist.

Doesn't really do anything.

A downgrade on Clayton Donaldson.

Discuss...

If you can’t see the difference in quality between Donaldson and McGoldrick then we need to discuss you.
How long have you been watching football.
And how come you know more than Wilder, Knill and his backroom staff armed with the latest technology and inside information.

Discuss?......hmmm....how about OP knows nothing about football?

He’s a quality player, creates plenty of chances for himself and others and is often the focus of our attacks. Clever, skilful, good football brain and deceptively quick.

One of the signings of the season for me.

However, I would suggest his finishing isn’t the best. Often hits the target but just not deadly enough in front of goal. But then he never has been.

He has a role in the squad and there’s a reason he’s played at this level most of his career. He’s keeping Clarke out of the side for a reason.

Agreed he’s a joy to watch. That penalty though

Considering he was free and won’t be on massive wages - he’s been an absolute gem. Let’s not forget this isn’t a multi million pound Martin Waghorn signing. McGoldrick should only really be a v. good squad player, his performances probably made us less desperate to get a top striker at the end of the window

At Ipswich McGoldrick and Waghorn we’re rated similiar.
I know an Ipswich and he says he’d rate McG as a better player than Waghorn but Waghorn is more able to score goals.

It’s the terrible injury record that lowers McG salary, not his quality.
His build up play and intelligence is up there with the best in the Championship, he’s never been prolific.
If he had pace and could score a few he’d be a regular in the PL.

Agree that if a team is aiming for top 2 then McG should be a really good back up striker, mainly because my Ipswich friend assures me he won’t last and will soon pick up an injury.

At the risk of going against public opinion, I thought he was the best player on the pitch today...

He's a very good footballer, anyone questioning that has an agenda or doesn't understand football.

It's fair to question whether he deserves his place in our side, every player should be subject to that and no one guaranteed their place.

I'm in the camp that says he brings enough to our game that even with some missed sitters, he deserves his place.

I despair at anyone on this thread writing him off as a bad player.

If you’re a club who are rolling in money, you replace a player like McGoldrick with someone who can also finish brilliantly (and you replace Egan with someone who also passes brilliantly; and Norwood with someone who doesn’t have the odd bizarre off-game; and Stevens with someone who can also kick it with his right foot ... etc.)
If you’re not rolling in money, you try and train Egan what exactly to do when he’s got the ball at his feet; and you work with Norwood on concentration or approach or focus or whatever weirdly goes awry sometimes; etc. etc. ... and you work on McGoldrick and confidence/ decision-making / technique in front of goal or whatever it is to try and improve his performance.

We have good players (and McGoldrick’s one of them), but there’s a reason they all play in the championship and not the champions’ league. Where a coach at this level earns his money is making the most of the best bits of every player’s game, and improving the worst bits, and combining everything as well as possible to get the most from the team. Wilder and Knill have done this extremely well at United.

Just buying someone better is the other option, but it’s an option that’s only available to clubs who currently have a massive bank balance - not us. It’s also still a risk as a new record signing may get injured, fall out with the manager, or turn out to not be as good as everyone thought. Recent experience suggests buying players in January can be pretty hit and miss in terms of genuinely improving the squad. Our summer acquisitions seem to be significantly better in this regard, and I’d include McGoldrick in that as he’s played well in most games, helped us create chances, and contributed to the team reaching a very decent position in the table at this point in the season.

He's the most intelligent forward we have. The one with the best vision, skill and ability on the ball.

Whether he's good enough for a team with promotion aspirations is a different conversation, but he's our best attacking option.

The fact Tufty seems to have him as one the first names on the team sheet and Sharp, Duffy, Washington, Clarke rotate around him - tells you all you need to know.

Game of opinions...

His disallowed goal was an amazing finish...

Would have been great if he was onside. The fact is he's a rubbish striker, if he was a good striker he would have us top of the league. He needs replacing in January.

Rubbish? Now you're playing to the gallery...
