Are you usually this positive, geat real -Adams with the help of Bassett will sort it out Stop whinging!

I was an arch clapper Fiery, but the last three years have worn me down i'm afraid. I can see nothing positive in this move, apart from making a few blades reminisce about the good old days.

His words haven't been too kind to us in the years since his departure, tipping Palarse to beat us in the play off final for one, but his time here was exciting if nowt else. The mention of his name dosen't conjure up hoofball to me but it does bring up memories of Leicester away etc.....

Welcome back DB, but for what it's worth, I think he'll be gone in the summer!

WELCOME BACK HARRY The motivator is back

From the interview I saw earlier I am pretty sure Adams is basically saying that he doesn't have enough time to deal with the politics in dealing with our board and Harry is his buffer. Maybe they are preparing for life without Birch. With no cash DB is better for us than Birch

Were heading down and something must be done. Bringing him in is surely a no lose situation?

Shrewd by Micky if u ask me, Harry will ruffle feathers in the boardroom while micky remains the blue eyed boy... after all, who is anybody to push Dave Bassett around at Bramall Lane.

Very shrewd bringing Harry back. Anybody knocking this either were not around in 1988 or were against the type of football we played.
We have needed somebody to take on the 'Dooley' role for a long time.
Must admit, it's the first time I've smiled for a long time when I heard this news.
Genuinely believe it's the right move and will get us out of the mire !!
Right man at the right time in 88. Ditto 2011.

I don't rate Bassett circa 2011, but Micky says he needs a trusted old hand to pick up some of the workload as he's so busy. So long as it's not a strategic managerial post, I see little harm.

This bassett set to ruffle feathers in the boardroom - what the same one who wanted to accept wednesdays bid for deano? its a hollow appointment and even if we're paying him £50, its still money down the drain. Pathetic.

Mebbes we could get Deano and Agana back as striking consultants, Whitehouse to scout for a decent winger, and put Bradders as head of security.

Actually, if we played them on the field they would still be better than the shower of shite currently masquarading as SUFC.
Get Real, this is a turning point in the season
Micky with the help of Harry will instill some pride and belief get rid of the dross and upwards and onwards
To the non - believers watch us go!!!

surely a questionable appointment at this stage, micky's comments about not realising how big a job managing sheffield united really is, is nothing short of worrying, he already has coaches and an assistant, he doesnt deal with any thing commercial/contract based as thats done by the money men. Smith is pretty much the development man, pembo does the academy, so how can this appointment not seem as desperate by our winless wonder, cheap option and were definately down.

The return of Dinosaur Dave. That settles all the arguments about Adams. He is and will remain Micky the Hoof. Now guided by his longtime and long extinct mentor The Hoofmeister himself.

Bassett did great in his time. He gave us some wonderful times. I was there for all of them. I shall always thank him for those special few years. But football has caught up with kick and rush and left it trailing in it's wake. Wimbledon are dead and gone.

Look at the teams at the top of our league for next year. Bournemouth, Brighton, Huddersfield, Southampton. Not a hoofball team amongst them. Is everyone out of step except us?

This is History repeating itself as farce. It leaves Birch's statement of intent about changing our style, culture and reputation utterly worthless. It is risible. If he has any integrity at all he will resign in the near future.

We have today become a parody of ourselves. No amount of sentimental, pseudo-nostalgic claptrap will alter that.

Who's next - Sid the Sloth?

Sorry Pinchy, I must disagree
Whilst Mr Bassett was always referred to as 'Lord of the Longball' he had some decent footballers playing at the time
Hodges, Gannon, Bryson, Deane, Agana, Gage - Quality players, far better than the shower of shite currently masquarading as SUFC.
Pinchy, put your stereotype machine away for a while and look at the options.
Adams, Bassett and Cork give me much more hope than McCabe , Birch, Blackwell and Speed
We have a Rag, Tag AND bobtail side, these guys may make them into a unit that can just avoid relegation
Next year is a different issue
Time and Place
Have faith Harry and Micky will keep us up!!!

he already has coaches and an assistant

To be fair to Adams, we are one man down from your normal backroom team. You normally have at the very least an assistant and coach. Cork seems to be fairly involved on the coaching front, so he's sort of doing both Ellis and Carver's jobs - Adams probably doesn't have the sort of support on the running-the-club side of things that he needs and that is normally in place. The likes of Smith and Pembo won't be doing any of the organisational/first team stuff, so it seems perfectly logical for Adams to bring someone else in. Whether Bassett is the right man to offer that support is another matter entirely. Personally, I haven't got a problem with this.

I think that it's another deckchairs on the Titanic move, quite frankly. Bassett may help in some way, or not, but this move will do little to address the fundamental problem at SUFC, which is that the squad we have is not good enough to avoid relegation.

2 years ago the focus was on global links, and property. Now there's no money for that, but instead we're spending time and money on development squads, and supporters liaisions, and consultants. They still don't get it.

That said, if Bassett wants to do something useful, I'd have no problem with him beating Adams around the head with something heavy until the latter agrees never to play the great sucking black hole that is the Monty twins in central midfield ever again.

First up, massive respect to the man for what he did. He gave us times we should have never had, when we had a board that made this current shower look good. He took us from where we are now heading, up 2 divisions in 2 seasons and kept us there, giving us more entertainment than I can remember. The end of his tenure was sad because Bassett was a great manager for us.

All that said, that was 15 years ago plus. All this says to me (and nothing against DB here) is that Micky is too small time to handle the job. He talks about 3 phone calls a day at Port Vale. FFS this is Sheffield United, in spite of our curreny plight of course we are a big club. Of course there are more people to deal with and of course there are more politics.

I'm afraid I laughed at the pigs when they got Howard Wilkinson in (I am still awaiting the return of David Hirst and Carlton Palmer). This is the same. DB is a spent force who is nothing more than a name these days.

Don't panic.

We're signing Bob Booker next week.He may be in his 30's but can do a job for us.... :)

Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1989.... :)

This concerned me too. How much managerial experience has Adams got compared to Speed? Didnt hear Speed moaning about the workload.

But Speed had Carver and Ellis + goalkeeper coach as 'backup' as far as I know there is only Corky + said goalkeeper coach whoever he is!

So is Bob Marley. Shall we posthumously appoint him to the coaching staff? How about Pele up front? On second thoughts.....

I really, really can't believe this.

Bassett is yesterday's man. He has his deserved place in our history and that's where it should stay.

I'm stunned and disappointed. I see Adams as a manager who plays the game to whatever strengths his players have. I see Basset as nothing other than long ball who cannot vary his style whatsoever. It worked wonderfuly for us because of Deane and Agana. It would have failed miserably otherwise.

The only saving grace would be if he's come really cheap. But in football, when does that happen?

Harry's a legend .....................

That 2nd goal by Deano has to be my favourite and the most I ever celebrated a goal.

That 3rd goal by Agana has to be the most I never celebrated a goal, being stood on the terrace behind convinced it was offside.

Give Bassett a chance, it cannot do any harm can it?

Yes, it can! It can set the club back 20 more years than Blacko has already achieved. It can add to our deservedly wretched reputation for anti-football. It can negate all the excellent work John Pemberton is doing at The Academy. It makes our CEO's commitment to a long overdue change in culture nothing more than hollow words. It can drive me to previously unplumbed depths of despair.

Bassett rightly deserves his place as a legendary figure in the the SUFC Hall [more of a vestibule, really] of Fame but his time has gone; his race is run; his ball is hoofed.

This appointment would be laughable if not for the sad fact that the joke is on us.

I love it. Maybe you should start the chant going when we go 3-0 up

most people are staying away after being worn down by the appalling standard of play.. so now to rub it in we have the return of the lord of the longball himself.. will this put bums back on seats??
i was shocked at MA on Look Leeds last night.. 'to take a share of the workload, so he can see his wife and kids'.. presumably he didn't check the job description first??
this has to be a backward step surely?
