I recently bought a copy of the season review of the 2000-01 season (I'll post a separate thread about that soon as I think it requires a thread of its own) and after watching a surprisingly decent, yet uneventful ending of the season, footage then went onto show every goal from this benefit match, the highlights were on for about 15 minutes as there was about 24 or 26 goals scored! Even Warnock scored!!!

Just wondering if anyone here knows more about this game?

Who played? I think it was the united squad v a celebrity squad?
Was Kozluk playing as a striker all game and thus missed sitters throughout the match?

I had never seen or heard about this game before hand, yet it seemed to be a cracking afternoon of entertainment and even a pitch invasion at the end.

I'm not sure if it was this game, but I remember a friendly around this time where Warnock brought himself off the bench and Tyrone Thompson set him a goal up!

It was the then current Sheffield United team versus a team of former Blades. Warnock and a few assistants etc were part of the oldies team. Kozluk did indeed play upfront but my memory is he scored a hatful!

I remember Nathan Blake started for the oldies which is strange because he's had nothing but bad things to say about us since. Whitehouse came on for the last 20 minutes or so and scored a hat trick (aided greatly by deliberately generous defending). His last goal put the older 12-11 (I think) up and the ref Uriah Rennie blew time immediately despite there being about a minute left.

In the footage there was some fantastic and blatant penalties, one given for the oldies (For Whitehouse to score?) and one ignored for the then current squad, which was akin to a rugby tackle

I went to this match, but in keeping with the times, it was one of several games i attended around the time that i have a hazy recollection of solely due to alcohol consumption beforehand of epic proportions.

Converted it to DVD earlier this morning :)

Yep, it was this one.

I went to this as well - I remember gary sinclair introducing bobby Davison as someone who "wasn't with us long but what he did we'll never forget" and warnock bowing down to the john street stand after scoring.

Got some photos of the event

Is Whitehouse still involved in football at all? I remember at the time when his rehab efforts came to an end and he officially retired the club said he'd be getting his coaching badges and there was a job at the club for him, but this never seemed to happen.

I think I read somewhere he was working for a parcel delivery firm still in Sheffield, still attends matches etc.

I remember that! He all said lines from the Greasy Chip Butty Song throughout the second half.

i was there too, great day i remember warnock scoring, such a shame dane isn't involved in football any more, he was my favourite player when i was a kid

Danes shirt that he wore for the game is signed and framed at my parents house!

He`s a white van man.

The old team beat the new team 12-11. The goals scored for the current team were from: Kozluk 5, Kelly, Devlin, Brown, Montgomery. Smith, Warnock.

The current team was:

Travers

Uhlenbeek (Brown)
Murphy (Jagielka)
Curle (L. Thompson)
Ullathorne (T. Thompson)

Devlin (Warnock)
Ford (Montgomery)
Kozluk (Thomas)
Ndlovu (Smith)

Asaba (Tonge)
Kelly

Haven't got the old team details :-(

I went to this, got my shirt signed after by Brian Deane, Dane Whitehouse, Mitch Ward, Warnock, Gareth Taylor and a few others. Wore it for school ont Monday and got a bollocking in assembly. Wish I still had it

I was there with Happy Hippy - I think it was the day after we'd been away to Bolton and they scored the winner in about the 7th min of two mins added time - - and Greater Manchester Police tried to arrest Warnock at the end of the game!

Warnock scored a screamer with John St singing "Warnock for England" - Kevin Gage played for the old timers to a chorus of "Gagey is our landlord" from the boozers of the Green Dragon - and Dane scored the winning penalty on a retake after having the first one perfectly legally saved (by Tracey?)

The first team played defence as attack (hence Kozzy scoring a hatful) - but lost the game when the kitman (or was he the physio?) - can't recall his name now - bloke with the pink cap) broke into the box from the right wing and was hacked down mercilessly to give dane his penalty.

If I remember if was 11-10 to Danes Mob. I remember it as the most fun I've had at BDTBL - and as Happy Hippy said afterwards - "If we were Manc glory hunters we'd have Barcelona or Madrid - but they'd never have as much fun for a fiver as we get"

Cracking day out - we need more of that kind of stuff!

12-11 and youth goalie Mervyn Travers was in goal for the current team - see above.

From the photos, I spot Bobby Davison, Nathan Blake, Chris Wilder, Jock Bryson, Glyn Hodges, Bob Booker, Paul Rodgers, Tony Agana?, Carl Bradshaw, Jamie Hoyland, Paul Stancliffe, Tom Cowan?, Brian Deane?, Gareth Taylor.

Who was the last player we had a testimonial for - Dane? Seems like a complete rarity for us - the Whitehouse one is the only one I can remember since I started watching us in '91. There had been talk of ones for Geary and Morgs when they retired, but can't recall anything happening with them.

I think Simon Tracey had one since then.????

He did. At the evening do Billy Whitehurst comandeered the karaoke and gave it a proper six-nowt. Full marks to him for enthusiasm, but not many for singing ability. I wasn't about to tell him he was rubbish though.:D
