My dad used to tell me that he watched cycle racing at Bramall Lane when he was a lad. There was a cinder track around the outside of the pitch. This was used during the early part of the 20th century, and maybe up to the second world war, though I don't have the exact details.

When I was a boy the cycling hero was Reg Harris. The main track was at Herne Hill in Kent, which I think was open-air.

Some may disagree but I think cycling has been the star sport in these Olympic Games.

(Just a few random thoughts...)

I thought you were organising a cycling event at the lane when I read the title - I was just visioning moDtheGod dusting off his Lycra after being inspired to get off his arse by the Olympics ;)

Herne Hill is still there and still open air...

It seems most of the cycle racing at Bramall Lane was organised by Sharrow Cycling Club.

Picture shows the start of one of the Club's famous races at Bramall Lane, which brought in huge crowds of spectators. The track had square corners, and as the Cricket Club complained bitterly of damage to their pitch if the cyclists used to many cinders for banking them up, cycle racing at 'The Lane' could be dangerous. Sharrow Cycling Club; Cycling in Sheffield really began in 1872, when the Sheffield Bicycling Club opened its training ground in Sharrow Vale. Here for the price of 6d. novices could have their first taste of the joys of mounting a 52" wheel "ordinary", or a penny farthing. In 1887 four keen cyclists from Sharrow, met at the bottom of Rundle Road and decided to form Sharrow Cycling Club.

I thought for one minute McCabe was in his way to creating the Blades Velodrome.
