Says we'll be handed a 1.25m warchest!

image.jpeg

Can £1.5m be called a "warchest" in today's market? Might be a big amount to Kev and HRH but not good enough for CW to finish the job.

Will keep repeating it, if we get new backers before the end of the JTW we mean business. If it's a day after we have fallen for the same old same old.

A couple of lower league prospects and/or a Prem loan or two is where I see January going, and that'd be fine with me.

Maybe a couple of million is there to be splashed on a solid ball playing midfielder, and I'm sure if there is Wilder will know who he wants.

“In terms of figures and numbers, whether it’s money we’ve made, whether it’s historic agreements, how much there is is left totally to the owners,” Wilder, whose side host Birmingham City today, said. “That’s their area of how they want to take the club forward”.

“They know better than me. I’ve said we’d like to bring three or four players in and maybe two or three will go. We’ll keep the numbers the same but up the quality in certain areas. The quality of player we bring in is up to them.” “I think we’re the 19th or 20th highest (budget) in the division,” he added. The money we’ve brought in whether it’s historic sell-ons or deals we’ve done, I think we’re in a healthy position.”

I think Wilder is quite clearly saying to the board “I’ve personally made a profit for you on transfers by selling Adams, DCL and Ramsdale. On top of that you’ve raked in large sums from Walker, Maguire and Murphy sell-ons”

“I only want four new players and you can either allow me to up the quality level to compete for promotion or you stick to the low survival budget and expect me to keep working miracles”

To my mind, it isn’t even a gamble for the board to say to Wilder. “Decide who you want and we’ll back you with what you need”.

They should know by now that he would only bring in “proper players” of the “right age” who would probably be worth more than they cost after a couple of seasons.

How has he "personally" made a profit on players who were here before he came?

I used the word "personally" to differentiate between the money received when he himself has sold players and additional money received from sell-ons for players he didn't actually sell himself.

His expenditure on transfers has been exceeded by the income from transfers of players sold during his tenure. Is that better?
He has more than balanced the books.
In addition to that, he's brought in many players whose current value is now much higher than their previous value.
On top of that, the club has received large sums from sell-on clauses.

I think we also have to take into consideration Mr Wilder's brilliant use of loan players, not only have they contributed to the success of our team but in doing so have also increased their value for their parent club.
I think this can only inprove the quality of the players bigger clubs are willing to loan us...

It's not changed for me since the start of the season. It's pace we need in the team, particularly in attack. I'm enjoying the football we play, but it is painfully slow at times. We work our way up the pitch, keeping the ball, and play some lovely passing football. Then we get to the edge of the box and it's like watching a short-sighted person trying to thread a needle, trying desperately to get the thread through the hole; this way, no that way, no, back this way, then that way again, and then back a bit and start again, then this way, then that way, then...and so on. Looking for the "perfect" killer pass that will put someone through on goal. Problem is, the opposition have had enough time by now to get all 10 players back behind the ball - so it's a game of attack v defence now around the 18 yard box.

I'd like to see us tear-arsing off down the pitch from within our own half at great speed and causing terror in the opposition defence. Running at full pelt with the ball at feet and catching the opposition defence totally on the hop. Think back to the Fulham game as an example. Jesus! the number of times their forwards got the ball in their own half and ran at us at about 100 miles an hour, absolutely cutting us open, hearts in mouth stuff. They were like two bloody white tornadoes going off and we'd no answer to that.

I haven't seen a player for United do that since Jamie Murphy. When we conceded a corner he'd position himself somewhere between our 18 yard box and the centre circle. As soon as the ball broke free we'd try and get it up to him and he'd be off. Running at speed with ball at feet and wreaking havoc. And...he could finish as well.

We need that type of player in the team - and we need to be looking to move the ball forwards much more quickly in my opinion. We also need youth up front too. All credit to Leon Clarke especially not just for his goals but for his all round play, which has been superb. Credit to Billy for his goals as well although I don't think his all round play has been up to a great deal in many matches tbh. But when you look at the ages of these strikers, Clarke, Sharp, Hanson, Donaldson, they are all blokes coming towards the end of their careers and none of them have much pace. Then we've got the unknown impact of Ched, will he/won't he ever be back anywhere like he was? Put it this way, if Clarke was to go out injured now that would leave such a massive hole in the team because no one else at the club can lead the line like he does AND score the goals. That's why I think strengthening attack is THE priority, but I agree that a really good creative midfielder would be an asset too. Someone who can dictate the flow of the game, like Coutts does.

Judging by the kind of players Wilder was looking to sign in the last transfer window - I think this is very much in his mind too.

We'll see. I don't think Wilder will be given millions to spend, but he's a very shrewd manager and I think he'll already know who he can get that's within his budget.

Brilliant post, dead accurate description of our style of play and its strengths and weaknesses.

Stats-wise, we've had the ball in the opposition third more than any other team in the league, which is a testament to our attacking style and the quality of the football. But even though I think we've scored more (or as many) goals from open play than any other team, it does sometimes feel like we're dominating possession and territory without creating a right lot. Fulham second half was like that, and so were a number of other matches. The stats show that, for all our possession in attacking areas, we play relatively few key passes, i.e. passes that open up the opposition and lead to scoring chances.

I agree it's because we lack a bit of pace and mobility up front. I think it's why we seem a bit more threatening sometimes when Brooks comes on, even though Billy is wonderful finisher and Brooks himself seems to run into dead-ends at times. We just become a bit less predictable.

A pacy striker and someone to compete with Lunny and Fleck in midfield would be good choices and I think it's very likely Wilder already has a list of targets in both positions.

It's slightly less inaccurate.

:)

Which bit do you think is inaccurate?

The bit that was wrong. That he's "personally" made a profit for the club. However much you used it to differentiate that's not the case. Would you, for example, attach any loss on Brayford to him? Or Hammond?

A player that costs £10m in January often isn’t a £10m asset at all. Fees are inflated as teams chasing promotion/splashing to avoid going down go crazy.

True but on the other hand a shrewd operator like CW can use Jan to prize away star players who are in the last 6 months of their deals for a bargain price as the clubs don’t want to lose them for free

Trouble is, ALL clubs will be aware of contract situations and will also be looking for a bargain.

Maybe so but it doesn’t mean they aren’t available nor does it mean they are market value.. Cardiff are our main transfer rivals I can see warnock looking at the same players now as CW but I do feel that Mad Man Tan helps give us the edge over them.
