Sadly that is just what a few Blades would like. A trophy player costing £8m would 'proove' we are serious about promotion and bollocks to what it might do to team spirit or constraining next year's wage bill if we don't go up.

Again, some would like it all ways round. If Wilder does not 'spunk moneh', it is because McCabe lied about the budget....

....and he never wanted Ched.....
Yeah but he's tactically naive and will be joining Everton next week anyway.

You shouldn't be raising these awkward points, BushBlade, you bloody trouble causer.

Cue:
"Where's the semi final money gone..."
"McCabe should put his hand in his pocket or let someone else* do it"
"the money tree"

*The 'someone else' may or may not be entirely mythical. There may or may not, be a long queue of Chinese billionaires all just waiting to pump £500m into United. It is not a poster's job to identify them, that is of course down to McCabe.

Well lm sure I saw a bloke that looked like Bryan Robson sat outside the wheelie bins at BL this morning having his elevenses. He was with a swarthy looking chap Who had a carrier bag which could have been full of money. There was a dog on a rope lead there as well.
Wonder if he's still bringing investors to the table?

Any news on how Chef is coming along ?

Tbh these days I wouldn't put anything beyond Chris Wilder. He's still only 49 (only a month or two older than Clayton Donaldson).

That was Nick "Monty" Montgomery getting in to character for his new role in a Brian Robsons biopic - "I like my Martini sheikh'd and not stirred"

OK , children let us try it again with the bloody spell checker off this time.

Any new news about Ched the Evans look you........

Would love either of these, had a look on Wikipedia at them both & they're both tied down to long term deals. Would be amazed if anyone could get them for less than £4-£5 million. Sadly that prices us out of it.
Would it be that much of a risk though to spend £10M ? More of an issue will be down to wages. If we have a go and then don't get promoted, but narrowly miss out, we will surely get enhanced sponsorship deals etc and quite a bit of revenue from this season. Not that I would want this, ever, but we have a potential £10M + asset that could be sold to balance the books if the gamble didn't pay off.

We won't spend much more than we did pre season
I still think we can make the play offs but I think top two would take a leicester type season from all around us

had the agents not been greedy and clubs a bit more helpful before the deadline
we would have probably spent another 3 to 4 m on signings I think 5 m will get us what we need ,
That should be doable
wont be surprised if its more

Aye and if they hadn't been so greedy the players they represent would be worth a lot more now, which means they'd have got a cut of a bigger deal not too far in the future. Maybe other agents will bear that in mind in the JTW.

Anyone get the impression that when talking about being backed in Jan, it didn't come across quite as positive as I thought it might?

Perhaps I'm reading too much into it?
yes its doubtful hes going to come out and say we are going to spend 4 674 500 pounds exactly in january

it is usually a little vague

Someone said Brum had spent 16 million so we can see what spending money can do tomorrow.

Though some will say 16 million is now't, to which I say well give me half a million if it has such little value.

There’s more to it than spending money, but let’s not let Wilder’s miracles paperbover what is known. The most successful clubs, on average, spend the most money.

If our spending power trays the same, there’s only one direction we will head. Wilder knows this - and wants more money.

“In terms of figures and numbers, whether it’s money we’ve made, whether it’s historic agreements, how much there is is left totally to the owners,” Wilder, whose side host Birmingham City today, said. “That’s their area of how they want to take the club forward”.

“They know better than me. I’ve said we’d like to bring three or four players in and maybe two or three will go. We’ll keep the numbers the same but up the quality in certain areas. The quality of player we bring in is up to them.” “I think we’re the 19th or 20th highest (budget) in the division,” he added. The money we’ve brought in whether it’s historic sell-ons or deals we’ve done, I think we’re in a healthy position.”

I think Wilder is quite clearly saying to the board “I’ve personally made a profit for you on transfers by selling Adams, DCL and Ramsdale. On top of that you’ve raked in large sums from Walker, Maguire and Murphy sell-ons”

“I only want four new players and you can either allow me to up the quality level to compete for promotion or you stick to the low survival budget and expect me to keep working miracles”

To my mind, it isn’t even a gamble for the board to say to Wilder. “Decide who you want and we’ll back you with what you need”.

They should know by now that he would only bring in “proper players” of the “right age” who would probably be worth more than they cost after a couple of seasons.

Does any manager not want 3-4 players in the January transfer window.

I can't remember any manager saying "nah, I don't want any". Equally I can't remember any saying "9 to 12 player at least"

During the close season prior to 1997-8 I do remember Howard Kendall saying he would not need any more players. I soon found out why. He b******d off to Everton.

But not before he had spent £1,000 000. on John Ebbrell from Everton.
They worked out it cost £38k for each minute he played for us .and this was in 1997...

A player that costs £10m in January often isn’t a £10m asset at all. Fees are inflated as teams chasing promotion/splashing to avoid going down go crazy.

Completely agree. Personally, I don't say we should or shouldn't spend any particular amount of money. We should use what's available to the best of our ability.

But what we absolutely should not be doing, is withholding funds from Wilder that we actually do have, purely in the name of caution and nothing else. If there were ever a manager to trust with the chequebook, to make astute signings, it's him.

We shouldn't make large, wholesale risky gambles. But taking small gambles is simply part of football. If we are to go for it at any time, it should be during this era.

Been said for a couple of months now. If we're in for a shout you'd like to think we'd give the TW a bash. The thing is where to strengthen? CM is a top priority for me and then maybe a cover striker and defender. Dunno, a lot can happen between now and January

It's not changed for me since the start of the season. It's pace we need in the team, particularly in attack. I'm enjoying the football we play, but it is painfully slow at times. We work our way up the pitch, keeping the ball, and play some lovely passing football. Then we get to the edge of the box and it's like watching a short-sighted person trying to thread a needle, trying desperately to get the thread through the hole; this way, no that way, no, back this way, then that way again, and then back a bit and start again, then this way, then that way, then...and so on. Looking for the "perfect" killer pass that will put someone through on goal. Problem is, the opposition have had enough time by now to get all 10 players back behind the ball - so it's a game of attack v defence now around the 18 yard box.

I'd like to see us tear-arsing off down the pitch from within our own half at great speed and causing terror in the opposition defence. Running at full pelt with the ball at feet and catching the opposition defence totally on the hop. Think back to the Fulham game as an example. Jesus! the number of times their forwards got the ball in their own half and ran at us at about 100 miles an hour, absolutely cutting us open, hearts in mouth stuff. They were like two bloody white tornadoes going off and we'd no answer to that.

I haven't seen a player for United do that since Jamie Murphy. When we conceded a corner he'd position himself somewhere between our 18 yard box and the centre circle. As soon as the ball broke free we'd try and get it up to him and he'd be off. Running at speed with ball at feet and wreaking havoc. And...he could finish as well.

We need that type of player in the team - and we need to be looking to move the ball forwards much more quickly in my opinion. We also need youth up front too. All credit to Leon Clarke especially not just for his goals but for his all round play, which has been superb. Credit to Billy for his goals as well although I don't think his all round play has been up to a great deal in many matches tbh. But when you look at the ages of these strikers, Clarke, Sharp, Hanson, Donaldson, they are all blokes coming towards the end of their careers and none of them have much pace. Then we've got the unknown impact of Ched, will he/won't he ever be back anywhere like he was? Put it this way, if Clarke was to go out injured now that would leave such a massive hole in the team because no one else at the club can lead the line like he does AND score the goals. That's why I think strengthening attack is THE priority, but I agree that a really good creative midfielder would be an asset too. Someone who can dictate the flow of the game, like Coutts does.

Judging by the kind of players Wilder was looking to sign in the last transfer window - I think this is very much in his mind too.

We'll see. I don't think Wilder will be given millions to spend, but he's a very shrewd manager and I think he'll already know who he can get that's within his budget.
