Been said for a couple of months now. If we're in for a shout you'd like to think we'd give the TW a bash. The thing is where to strengthen? CM is a top priority for me and then maybe a cover striker and defender. Dunno, a lot can happen between now and January
It's not changed for me since the start of the season. It's pace we need in the team, particularly in attack. I'm enjoying the football we play, but it is painfully slow at times. We work our way up the pitch, keeping the ball, and play some lovely passing football. Then we get to the edge of the box and it's like watching a short-sighted person trying to thread a needle, trying desperately to get the thread through the hole; this way, no that way, no, back this way, then that way again, and then back a bit and start again, then this way, then that way, then...and so on. Looking for the "perfect" killer pass that will put someone through on goal. Problem is, the opposition have had enough time by now to get all 10 players back behind the ball - so it's a game of attack v defence now around the 18 yard box.
I'd like to see us tear-arsing off down the pitch from within our own half at great speed and causing terror in the opposition defence. Running at full pelt with the ball at feet and catching the opposition defence totally on the hop. Think back to the Fulham game as an example. Jesus! the number of times their forwards got the ball in their own half and ran at us at about 100 miles an hour, absolutely cutting us open, hearts in mouth stuff. They were like two bloody white tornadoes going off and we'd no answer to that.
I haven't seen a player for United do that since Jamie Murphy. When we conceded a corner he'd position himself somewhere between our 18 yard box and the centre circle. As soon as the ball broke free we'd try and get it up to him and he'd be off. Running at speed with ball at feet and wreaking havoc. And...he could finish as well.
We need that type of player in the team - and we need to be looking to move the ball forwards much more quickly in my opinion. We also need youth up front too. All credit to Leon Clarke especially not just for his goals but for his all round play, which has been superb. Credit to Billy for his goals as well although I don't think his all round play has been up to a great deal in many matches tbh. But when you look at the ages of these strikers, Clarke, Sharp, Hanson, Donaldson, they are all blokes coming towards the end of their careers and none of them have much pace. Then we've got the unknown impact of Ched, will he/won't he ever be back anywhere like he was? Put it this way, if Clarke was to go out injured now that would leave such a massive hole in the team because no one else at the club can lead the line like he does AND score the goals. That's why I think strengthening attack is THE priority, but I agree that a really good creative midfielder would be an asset too. Someone who can dictate the flow of the game, like Coutts does.
Judging by the kind of players Wilder was looking to sign in the last transfer window - I think this is very much in his mind too.
We'll see. I don't think Wilder will be given millions to spend, but he's a very shrewd manager and I think he'll already know who he can get that's within his budget.
