There are lots of things about the club that need to move forward , they're on most posts , we know what they are and there's general consensus.

Nevertheless the club needs to be identifiable to its supporters, the essence of what makes it , the DNA of sufc , I think thats what referred to as culture.

It matters as much as any ingredient, not more or less, its not either or , you can have both.

And what people perceive as being “our culture” is surely a generational thing, depending on what things were like in our formative years. For quite a few of us, that’s rooted in the fantastic football we played under John Harris. We weren’t “plucky little underdogs with a chip on their shoulders and wanting to fight the world” then, we were highly respected. But that changes and evolves down through the generations. The culture changed under Bassett, again under Warnock and again under Wilder. And it will change again, hopefully in a more progressive way than where we are right now.

Chelsea - Kings road , flamboyant
Liverpool - entitled egotists
Man U - buccaneers
Man C - boring machine
Sheff U - old fashioned grit

Based on my experiences as a 65 year old

The shadow / impression created by Utd on others is not very attractive or exciting. We’re rather dull and I would imagine. Hence the lack of driven and wealthy owners and recruiting from the fingers crossed dregs of the pensioners barrel.

I do know that in my lifetime we've only had success with Dave Bassett, Neil Warnock and Chris Wilder - all managers cut from the same cloth.

It's not just Wilder who speaks like this. I've heard the same this season from the supposedly progressive Davies at Birmingham. That was something along the usual lines about being "honest" because their fans are down-to-earth and like players who run around a lot and don't shirk tackles. I'd like to hear from fans of any club, anywhere in Europe, who don't expect that as a given. I don't know if Davies is equally wary of foreigners, cockneys, jocks or taffs who might not know what it means to come from Sheffield (or Birmingham in his case). I suspect not.

I agree with lots of the posts above. When I was first introduced to the club we were considered a rather stylish and exciting team and even when Harris left the club tried to recruit managers in the same mould like Haslam and Sirrell, if unsuccesfully.

Our reputation seems to have been permanently changed by the appointment of Bassett and reinforced by the tenure of Warnock despite what might have happened inbetween all that. I wonder if Howard Kendall knew he managed a hoof-ball side of honest triers? Mind you poor old Howard probably wouldn't have known either way by that stage. Nor would Robson later on for that matter.

I wonder if Wilder was so interested in the club's culture when he was being feted by the national and international press and praised to the skies by Guardiola and Bielsa? That's all a bit of a faded memory now as everyone has seen behind the curtain, so we're left with hard work, determination and as many puns as Sky commentators can shoe-horn in around something to do with steel.

Anyway, to summarise; it's complete bollocks.

Yes but all of the labels are now out dated and don't still apply to the above clubs, with the small exception of the Two Sheffield clubs.

Completely agree and its great when people ysena thread appropriately. Too often though it is merely an attempt to cloak a simple Wilder out view which makes the thread incredibly frustrating to read even if you agree with the underlying proposition!

It was cheap stuff they used to knock out as champagne when I went in 1991-97, just pomagne or other fizzy shit.

When Berlins was linked to Isabella's next door they had the same stuff. Legend has it, or more to the point an old mate of mine swears blind he was there and saw it (I'm not claiming authenticity!) that when Whitney played the Arena early 90s, Bobby Brown was in Isabella's with minders and was in the VIP area (loosely termed) drinking Royal Gold from the bottle
