A colleague is a Chesterfield season ticket holder and he told me ages ago that Ched was far too good for League 1 and possibly too good for the Championship but at Chesterfield he ploughed a lone furrow. Interestingly he said that Ched's wife and other family members attended every home game in an overt show of support. As for the decision making process, Chris Wilder is undoubtedly his own man and it's likely that he sought the opinion of some of the senior pros, particularly Bill before coming to a decision on Ched. He has been very consistent this season on squad harmony and I just can't imagine that he's taking a punt on Ched - it will be for sound footballing reasons.
Sharp and Long are the only players that were here when Ched was last here and with Billy being captain, I fully expect that the gaffer will have canvassed his opinion on Ched’s character as it’s something he places a lot of emphasis on.
Chesterfield fans at my work said when fit, Ched was head and shoulders above their other players but had no service whatsoever. Said he bullied defenders and ran himself into the ground. They’ve also indicated part of the reason he’s been injured so much is that they kept rushing him back before he was ready. If they are right about that, hopefully, a Wilder pre-season will get him right.
