I was at the Lane last night to greet the players back from Northampton and having watched Leon Clarke being mobbed whilst singing United songs alongside fans before Caolan Lavery had to be escorted inside by 7+ stewards as the fans wouldn't let him go (he was the last player to go inside by a good few minutes as seemingly every Blade wanted a piece of him)..

On the way home, I got thinking about the players that have played for both us & them and there seems to be far more (in my 27 years) that have gone from blue to red and another thing that's striking is how well thought of and quickly accepted they are by our fans.

Bromby, the Quinn clan, Geary and Bradshaw were all very popular and Rich Cresswell also did well. Leon Clarke was far from a crowd favourite but the two previous games have rocketed him up the adoration-ladder and the images of him singing "we are Blades" haven't done him any harm.

Jon-Paul McGovern went that way after us and did well, but Keith Treacy failed to pull any trees up at either club.

Of course we are more of a every-day man's, working class club than them lot but isn't it funny that more players come to us after them and more often than not, get on well.

Beat me to it. I think we probably bought him solely on the strength of 'that' goal against us at the lane.
Regarding Curran Actually hatred apart , he was a bargain at the time , and we made a fair few bob selling him on , if i remember . The Gippo came banging on the door , wanting to play for us .

Remember when Mattock signed for them, and tried to ingratiate himself with them lot by saying some derogatory comments about us,where is he now, playing non league?
what did he say ?
We don't constantly talk about how massive everything is and can read and write ?

That could easily have been the case because it was like he just disappeared. Not heard anything about him for ages.

But, no! Looked it up and he actually plays for Rotherham!

Who'd've thunk it, eh?

Didn't donkeys year ago Varadi and Stainrod leave us and join the dark side at a later point?

I don't think they pulled any trees up though.

Yes. Stainrod married Miss Sheffield United and when he signed for SWFC circa 1984 The Stir ran a front page story about how she now supported Wendy who were 'the better team'.

Non league is his level to be fair. Remember him being highly rated but cotterill absolutely destroyed him at the lane. Poor lad didn't know what day of the week it was album half time

David Ford.

Jeff King.

Both rubbish!

I disagree. King did a decent job for us and was popular with the supporters.

Ford had never recovered his form after suffering serious injuries in a car crash and he wasn't a success overall but his signing alongside John Hope was important in changing the course of our promotion season.

I think Varadi only played 6 games for us before that fool, Haslam, sold him (to Everton I think). He later had a few very successful seasons at Swillsboro tbf.

I take that back about King. He was actually decent (but I didn't rate Ford). I remember him being an eccentric though and doing some bizarre things at times. I remember a night match at Elm Park Reading when, under no pressure and facing his own goal, he blasted a volley into his own net for probably the most spectacular own goal of all time!

He wore one Puma and one Adidas boot as well. Very strange but I admit he did have some good games for us.
