As much as people will focus on Ched's absence, I think Cresswell's absence was as much of a problem yesterday. Yes the midfield were poor, our lack of pressing and willingness to back off first half was embarrassing to watch. Ball retention in the middle of the park was poor. However, when we did get the ball, there were few options up front. Porter and Hoskins were static or trotting about. At least with Cresswell he runs the channels, pulls defenders about (often to Ched's benefit over the course of the season). He is willing to take and hold up the ball. Neither of our front two could do that yesterday.
I've heard mention that Hoskins has a double hernia, if so why start him? I struggle to see what Porter offers on a consistent basis. O'Halloran is ultimately a frustrating player, running at defenders, not knowing when to pass, wanting to beat another man, but for me he has to start against Stevenage and hopefully Cresswell (if fit).
I heard last night that Cresswell declared himself fit, but the management didn't want to risk him. Maybe their reticence a reaction to Monty doing the same at Hillsborough? I only hope he is back next week, not so much for his own goal threat, but for what his work may create for others.
